GuidePoint GRIT logged 2,760 victims claimed by ransomware groups; Comparitech recorded 2,627 attack claims, only 247 of them confirmed by affected organizations; and ZeroFox tracked at least 2,381 ransomware and digital-extortion incidents. These are separate datasets, not competing counts of a single verified global total.
What the Q3 2026 figures actually count
Each publisher reported an unusually high number in its own tracking series. The differences reflect units of measurement, confirmation rules, and collection methods—not necessarily a disagreement about a common set of incidents.

| Publisher | Q3 2026 figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| GuidePoint GRIT | 2,760 victims | Victims claimed by threat actors and observed by GRIT. The team said its count was 21% above Q2 2026 and 75% above Q3 2025. |
| Comparitech | 2,627 attack claims | Publicly tracked claims, including 247 confirmed attacks and 2,380 unconfirmed claims. An unconfirmed claim may be false, or the organization may not have publicly acknowledged it. |
| ZeroFox Intelligence | At least 2,381 incidents | Ransomware and digital-extortion incidents, a category that can include extortion without encryption. ZeroFox said the figure was about 14% above its previous high of 2,091 in Q4 2025. |
GuidePoint described its Q3 volume as a record in the GRIT dataset. ZeroFox also called its result a record within its historical series. Comparitech’s figure is a count of claims; its confirmed subset is not the same as the full total. None of these sources establishes a single authoritative global count of ransomware attacks.
Why the numbers are not interchangeable
A “victim” in an actor’s claim, an attack claim in a public tracker, and a ransomware-and-digital-extortion incident are different units. Publishers also draw on different sources and apply different attribution and confirmation standards. ZeroFox’s Q3 report describes a collection using curated open-source material, vetted social media, proprietary sources, and direct access to threat actors and groups; it notes that reported information cannot always be independently verified. Its information cutoff was October 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. EDT.

Comparitech marks an attack confirmed when the organization publicly discloses ransomware, or acknowledges a cyberattack that coincides with a group’s claim. Its unconfirmed claims therefore should not be read as proven compromises. GuidePoint’s victim count likewise reflects its observations of actor claims, not a census of every incident. Adding these figures together—or averaging them—would double-count some events and combine unlike measures.
Which ransomware groups led the reported activity?
The answer depends on the measure. GuidePoint ranked groups by share of observed victims, while Comparitech counted claims.

| Dataset and measure | Leading groups in Q3 2026 |
|---|---|
| GuidePoint GRIT, share of observed victims | TheGentlemen: 12.9%; Qilin: 12.6%. |
| Comparitech, attack claims | Qilin: 357 claims; The Gentlemen: 342 claims. |
In GuidePoint’s dataset, the two groups together accounted for about one in four observed victims. Comparitech’s claim counts put Qilin first. Calling either group “the most active” without naming the dataset and metric would obscure that difference.
Where and in which industries were victims reported?
Geography
GuidePoint observed victims in 115 countries, compared with 108 in Q2 2026 and 90 in Q3 2025; the United States represented 42% of its observed victims. Comparitech recorded 1,066 U.S. claims, or 41% of its claims, with Germany and Canada next by count. These percentages come from separate datasets and should not be combined.

Industries
Manufacturing was the leading industry in both publishers’ reporting. GuidePoint ranked technology second and healthcare third among its observed victims. Comparitech recorded 478 claims against manufacturers in its business-industry breakdown, 22% more than in Q2 2026, and also reported increases in finance and technology claims. Industry categories and tracking methods differ, so the rankings describe each publisher’s dataset rather than a harmonized sector census.
What the payment figures do—and do not—show
GuidePoint said its internal payment data showed the share of organizations paying a ransom falling from 50% to just under 21%. Among organizations that did pay, its average payment rose from $240,000 to $321,000. These are figures from GuidePoint’s internal data, not a representative estimate for all ransomware victims; the reported increase in average payment applies only to the organizations in that data that paid.

- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.
- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
The pattern is a reminder that a lower payment rate does not mean a lower threat. GuidePoint’s GRIT summary put it this way: “Do not mistake a declining payment rate for a declining threat.”

GuidePoint’s recommendations emphasize patch velocity, identity hygiene, and response automation. These are its defensive priorities, not a measured guarantee that any single control prevents a specified share of attacks.

- Improve patch velocity: prioritize timely remediation of exposed systems and track whether critical updates are reaching the assets that need them.
- Strengthen identity hygiene: review access and account protections, especially for accounts and services that can reach sensitive systems.
- Automate response where it helps: reduce delays in alert handling and containment so responders can act within the shorter windows that GuidePoint says attackers’ faster use of AI tools may create.
For schools and education-technology providers, GuidePoint highlighted several independently claimed attacks against learning platforms after the Instructure incident. It urged attention to identity and access management as well as perimeter security. That observation is a warning about a reported pattern, not proof that every education provider had the same exposure.
How to read the record claim
The defensible conclusion is that Q3 2026 brought record or record-level reported activity across multiple threat-tracking datasets. The scale is serious, but the totals describe different things: actor-claimed victims, public attack claims with varying confirmation, and ransomware or digital-extortion incidents. Use each figure with its publisher and definition attached, rather than treating one number as the global total.
