You can put an OWASP Coraza and Core Rule Set (CRS) reverse proxy in front of a web app with Docker, but the available quick-start instructions do not establish that setup takes two minutes or is production-ready in that time. The shortest route assumes Docker and the app are already running on a network the proxy can reach.
What you are setting up
A web application firewall (WAF) checks HTTP requests against rules before they reach your application. In this setup, Coraza is the WAF engine and OWASP CRS supplies generic detection rules. OWASP describes Coraza as a WAF framework that supports ModSecurity’s SecLang rule language and is compatible with CRS; it can run as a library or through connectors such as Caddy and Docker (Coraza). CRS covers common attack categories such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and local file inclusion, and requires a compatible engine (OWASP CRS).

The Docker repository’s quick start runs a reverse proxy: traffic reaches the proxy first, gets inspected, and is then forwarded to your app as the backend. The commands below follow the repository’s Compose-profile approach. Check the repository for current instructions and image tags before deploying (Coraza CRS Docker repository).
Start the proxy with Docker Compose
- Check prerequisites. Make sure Docker Compose is available and your web app is running on a Docker network reachable by the WAF container. Know the app’s service name and listening port; the proxy must be able to reach that backend.
- Choose one proxy profile. From the repository’s Compose setup, start the variant you want:
docker compose --profile caddy up -d,docker compose --profile nginx up -d, ordocker compose --profile apache up -d. The documented host ports are 8080 for Caddy, 8081 for Nginx, and 8082 for Apache. Confirm the current Compose file and port mappings, since these are configuration values that can change. - Set the backend. Configure the proxy’s
BACKENDvalue to the app’s reachable service name and port, following the repository’s Compose or Docker example. A container’slocalhostrefers to that container itself, not automatically to another container; use a name and network arrangement that lets the proxy resolve the app. - Route a request through the proxy. Open the app through the selected proxy’s host port, not its direct backend port. For example, use
http://localhost:8080for the documented Caddy mapping when testing from the Docker host. The exact URL and port depend on your mapping and environment.
If you prefer a direct docker run invocation, the repository also documents that route. Use its current example and set BACKEND to your actual application endpoint rather than copying an example value blindly.

Verify normal and blocked requests
First check that an ordinary request reaches the app and returns its expected response. The repository’s sample check expects a normal request to return HTTP 200. It also demonstrates a SQL-injection-style query that should return HTTP 403 in that example configuration (repository quick-start checks).
These two checks confirm only that the demonstration path is responding as expected. A 200 and a 403 do not prove that the WAF blocks every attack, that the rules fit your app, or that the deployment is ready for public traffic. Test with your own application’s ordinary workflows and review WAF events for legitimate requests being denied.

Before exposing production traffic
A quick-start proxy is a starting point, not a complete production configuration. Work through these deployment concerns before sending real users through it:
- TLS termination: Decide where HTTPS is terminated and ensure the path between that point, the WAF, and the app matches your security requirements.
- Forwarded headers: Configure and trust proxy headers deliberately so the app sees the intended client and scheme information. Do not trust client-supplied forwarded headers without a controlled proxy path.
- Health checks and recovery: Confirm that the proxy and backend health are monitored, and know how to restore direct or previous routing if the WAF fails or blocks legitimate traffic.
- Logs and tuning: Review alerts and denied requests, then tune exclusions narrowly for verified false positives rather than disabling broad protections.
- Request-body limits: Ensure body-size and upload limits accommodate legitimate application use without allowing unnecessarily large requests.
- Rule and image updates: Establish how you will review updates, test them, and roll them out. Prefer a reviewed stable or LTS image tag over a rolling tag; the repository says its rolling tags track the latest build and should not be used in production. Tag names change, so select a current tag directly from the repository.
When ModSecurity may fit better
If you already operate Apache or Nginx and want to integrate a WAF there, ModSecurity is another open-source engine with documented installation guidance. Its guide recommends beginning with SecRuleEngine DetectionOnly, reviewing and tuning events, and only then enabling blocking. That lets you discover likely false positives before the WAF denies real traffic. The guide also warns that high debug levels can significantly affect performance (ModSecurity installation guide).

Choose based on your existing stack and operational needs, not an assumed performance ranking: the cited materials do not establish universal superiority or comparative throughput. Consider connector availability, build and upgrade work, rule maintenance, tuning controls, and whether you need a self-managed inline proxy or a hosted edge service. Whichever engine you choose, the ruleset and the engine are separate parts of the system.

That timing is not substantiated by the project instructions. Starting a container can be quick when Docker, networking, backend routing, and configuration are already in place. Finding the correct backend address, arranging TLS, validating application behavior, tuning false positives, and preparing rollback can take longer. Treat the two-minute framing as an aspiration for launching a demo, not a promise of a secure production rollout.
