Both support full-page capture, but matching options do not guarantee identical pixels. To compare them fairly, control the browser engine, viewport, pixel scale, page readiness, loaded assets, and animation state, then inspect the pages and visual differences that matter to your project.
What “screenshot quality” means in this comparison
Capture scope and image quality are separate questions. Full-page mode determines how much of the page is captured; output format and pixel scale affect the resulting image; browser rendering and page state affect what appears in it. The official APIs describe available controls, not a comparative image-quality benchmark.

So there is no evidence-based blanket winner. The useful question is which tool and configuration reliably capture your actual pages in the browser engines you need.

How full-page capture differs
| Area | Puppeteer | Playwright | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-page mode | fullPage captures the full page. Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions |
fullPage: true captures the full scrollable page instead of only the visible viewport. Playwright Screenshots |
Compare the final image dimensions and inspect content near page boundaries, sticky elements, and lazy-loaded sections. |
| Clipping and extent | clip specifies a region. captureBeyondViewport controls capture beyond the viewport; it defaults to false when there is no clip and true otherwise. Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions |
clip specifies a region, while fullPage selects full-page capture. Playwright Page API |
Set the intended capture extent explicitly. A clip and a full-page capture answer different needs. |
| Pixel scale | The cited screenshot options document type and quality but do not document a scale control. Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions | scale: 'css' produces one output pixel per CSS pixel; scale: 'device' uses device pixels and can produce larger high-DPI images. Playwright Page API |
Keep scale consistent when comparing dimensions or file size. Resolution is not the same as rendering fidelity. |
| Animation and caret | The cited Puppeteer screenshot-options interface does not list animation or caret controls. Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions | Screenshot options can disable or allow animations and hide the caret or leave its initial behavior. Playwright Page API | Decide how changing elements and text cursors should appear in a visual comparison. |
| Masking dynamic elements | Not listed in the cited screenshot-options interface. Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions | Locator masks can cover selected elements during capture. Playwright Page API | Mask only regions that are intentionally variable; masking changes what the screenshot shows. |
| Output | Options include image type and quality; quality does not apply to PNG. Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions | Options document type, quality, transparency, path, and buffer output. Playwright Page API | Compare like-for-like formats and quality settings. |
These interfaces establish comparable intent for full-page capture, not identical internal behavior. Pages with sticky headers, long scrolling layouts, lazy images, or dynamic widgets should be tested directly.
How to compare screenshot quality fairly
Use a repeatable test rather than comparing screenshots made with different defaults. The following is a testing method, not a published benchmark from either project.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Use the same browser engine. Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit support in its Page API. The cited Puppeteer references do not establish a cross-engine comparison. Compare the engine combinations your project actually targets.
- Match the viewport and page state. Use the same viewport dimensions, URL, authentication state, cookies, locale, and other inputs that can alter layout or content.
- Wait for the same readiness condition. Ensure fonts, images, and other relevant assets have loaded and that the page has reached the same application state before capture. A page captured before an image or web font loads can differ even when the screenshot settings match.
- Choose a scale and output format. In Playwright, record whether you used CSS or device scale. Use equivalent output formats and comparable quality settings when the tools expose them.
- Set a consistent animation policy. For Playwright, choose whether to disable or allow animations and how to handle the caret. If the other setup cannot apply the same control through the cited screenshot options, note that limitation rather than treating it as a rendering-quality result.
- Capture and inspect the same regions. Compare output dimensions, clipping, page edges, sticky or fixed elements, lazy content, and any visibly changing areas. For visual checks, Playwright also documents screenshot assertions and full-page capture options in its PageAssertions API.
Full-page capture details that can change the result
Sticky and fixed elements
Headers, floating controls, and other fixed-position elements can make a long-page capture look different from a set of ordinary viewport screenshots. Check whether they appear in the expected position and whether any content is obscured. Do not assume that the two full-page modes handle every page layout identically.
Lazy-loaded content
Some pages load images or sections only as they approach the viewport. A full-page option alone does not establish that every resource has loaded before capture. Make page readiness part of the test and inspect the bottom and other lazy-loaded areas for missing content.

Clips, scale, and file size
A clip narrows the requested region; full-page mode requests the scrollable page. Playwright’s device-pixel scale can create a larger image than CSS-pixel scale, so compare dimensions and file size only after recording the scale. PNG quality controls should not be treated like JPEG quality settings: Puppeteer documents that its quality option does not apply to PNG.
Browser engines
Engine differences can affect rendered output independently of the automation library. Playwright’s Page API demonstrates Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit; choose engines based on the browsers your application must support, then compare within each engine instead of attributing every difference to Puppeteer or Playwright.

Which is better for visual regression testing?
Choose based on the controls your workflow needs and the browsers you test—not an assumed quality ranking. Playwright’s documented screenshot API includes explicit pixel scale, animation behavior, and locator masking, and its screenshot assertion API supports visual checks. Puppeteer documents full-page capture, clipping, and captureBeyondViewport, whose default depends on whether a clip is supplied.
If you already use one library, its screenshot features may be sufficient. If deterministic visual checks require controls documented by Playwright, those controls may make the setup more convenient. In either case, validate representative pages and browser engines; the official documentation does not provide a universal quality winner.

DIY example: full-page capture with Playwright
Playwright’s documented page screenshot method accepts full-page capture and returns a buffer. Install the Playwright package and the browser engine your project uses, then adapt this minimal Node.js example to an existing page or add your project’s browser-launch and navigation setup:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true, scale: 'css', animations: 'disabled' });
await browser.close();
})();
Use the readiness condition appropriate to the site: a page that continues making network requests may not reach network idle. The screenshot API and its options are documented in the Playwright Page API and Screenshots guide. Check the documentation for the Playwright version installed in your project because API details can change.

Common problems and what to check
- The capture stops at the visible viewport: verify that full-page mode is enabled. In Puppeteer, also check whether a clip is set and how
captureBeyondViewportapplies; its documented default changes with clipping. - The image is unexpectedly large: check Playwright’s scale setting. Device scale uses device pixels and can make high-DPI output larger than CSS-scale output.
- Images or sections are missing: confirm the page reached the state that loads those assets before capture. Lazy-loaded content may require page-specific readiness handling.
- Repeated captures differ around moving content: decide on an animation and caret policy. Playwright exposes those controls in its screenshot options; the cited Puppeteer options do not list equivalent fields.
- A comparison looks worse despite matching full-page settings: check engine, viewport, scale, fonts, resource loading, format, and page state before attributing the difference to the library.
- The requested area is missing or clipped: review the clip coordinates and whether full-page capture is intended. A region clip and a full scrollable-page capture are not interchangeable.
FAQ
Does Puppeteer return screenshot bytes or a file?
Page.screenshot() returns a Uint8Array by default, or a base64 string when encoding: 'base64' is requested. See the Puppeteer Page.screenshot API.
Can I take a screenshot of one element with Puppeteer?
Yes. The Puppeteer screenshots guide covers element capture; it scrolls the element into view if needed. See Puppeteer Screenshots.
