Puppeteer Screenshots: PNG or JPEG?

Use PNG when you need transparency, want Puppeteer’s default format, or prefer to avoid JPEG’s lossy quality setting. Use JPEG when you want lossy compression and need to set a quality value. Puppeteer documents JPEG quality from 0 to 100; the setting does not apply to PNG. The current Puppeteer API type also lists WebP, but verify support in the version installed in your project.

PNG vs. JPEG in Puppeteer

The official API references describe behavior, not a controlled comparison of PNG and JPEG file sizes or visual fidelity. There is no universally prescribed JPEG quality value; test your pages and settings if those trade-offs matter.

Save a screenshot in the format you want

Puppeteer infers the screenshot format from the filename extension when you provide a path. You can also set type explicitly. Keep the extension and type consistent so the output is clear to you and to tools that inspect the file.

For example, a JPEG output can be saved with path: 'page.jpg' and type: 'jpeg'. Setting both makes the intended format explicit. Puppeteer documents the extension-based inference behavior in its ScreenshotOptions reference.

Make a transparent screenshot

1. Choose PNG, the format Puppeteer uses by default.
2. Set omitBackground: true to hide the browser’s default background.
3. Make sure the page content itself does not paint an opaque background over the area you want to be transparent.

omitBackground does not remove backgrounds defined by the page’s own content or styles. Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions reference documents the option and its transparency behavior.

Troubleshooting format problems

• The saved format is not what you expected: Check the filename extension and the explicit type. Puppeteer can infer the format from the extension when a path is supplied.
• Your PNG has no transparency: Set omitBackground: true and check whether the page itself paints an opaque background.
• A quality setting has no effect on PNG: Puppeteer documents quality as inapplicable to PNG. Use JPEG if you need that quality control.
• WebP is rejected or unavailable: Check the API reference and type definitions for the Puppeteer version installed in your project; the current type definition is not a guarantee for older versions.
