If Puppeteer screenshots fail in Docker, first identify whether Chrome is missing Linux libraries, Puppeteer cannot find the browser executable, the sandbox cannot start, or Chrome cannot write its profile and cache. Each problem needs a different fix; installing a generic list of packages or adding --no-sandbox often misses the cause.
Identify what is stopping Chrome
Run diagnostics inside the built container, not just on your development machine. The base image, installed browser, runtime user, and mounted directories all affect whether Chrome can launch.

Chrome reports a missing shared library or exits before connecting

Replace /path/to/chrome with the actual browser executable path. Any listed library is unresolved. Install the corresponding system package using the package manager and package names for your image’s distribution and version. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide lists common Debian/Ubuntu and CentOS dependencies, including libraries for GTK, NSS, GBM, X11, and fonts. Use those lists as a starting point, not a universal package recipe.

Puppeteer cannot find the browser executable
Errors such as Could not find expected browser locally or an executable ENOENT usually point to an installation or path mismatch, not missing shared libraries. Check whether the image build actually downloaded a browser, whether install scripts ran, and whether the build-time and runtime users use the same home and cache paths.
Puppeteer downloads browsers by default. Since v19.0.0 its default cache is ~/.cache/puppeteer; set PUPPETEER_CACHE_DIR if you need a different location. If you intentionally skipped the download or use puppeteer-core, configure the system browser executable consistently. The installation guide explains the distinction: puppeteer installs a compatible browser, while puppeteer-core does not download Chrome.

Chrome says “No usable sandbox!”
This is a sandbox or container-permissions issue, not a missing-library error. Prefer a working Chrome sandbox and a container configuration that supports it. Puppeteer strongly discourages disabling the sandbox; do not add --no-sandbox as a routine workaround. If a constrained environment leaves no alternative, disabling it weakens isolation and should be limited to trusted content.
Crashpad, profile, or cache errors appear at startup
Chrome needs writable locations for its profile, configuration, and cache. A read-only filesystem or directories owned by another user can cause startup failures, including chrome_crashpad_handler: --database is required. Point XDG_CONFIG_HOME, XDG_CACHE_HOME, and Puppeteer’s userDataDir to writable directories, or mount writable volumes with ownership set for the browser user.

The browser launches, but headless GPU behavior differs
This is relevant only if your capture requires GPU acceleration. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting documentation says chrome-headless-shell needs --enable-gpu for GPU acceleration in headless mode. It is not a general fix for startup failures.
Choose a Docker image strategy
Build a custom image when you need control
Install the browser’s required system libraries in the Dockerfile, using package names for the exact base distribution and version. Keep the browser version, Puppeteer version, and dependency set aligned. Chromium’s package manifests and Puppeteer’s system requirements are better references for current packages than an old copied Dockerfile.

Use Puppeteer’s maintained image to reduce dependency assembly

The documented sandboxed run uses --cap-add=SYS_ADMIN and recommends --init or a custom init entrypoint so browser child processes are reaped. Adapt the application command, mounts, and writable paths to your deployment.
Keep Alpine separate from Debian and Ubuntu advice
Puppeteer says Chrome does not support Alpine out of the box. Alpine uses different packages, and Chromium version compatibility can matter. Do not assume an Ubuntu package list will work there. Verify the specific Alpine, Chromium, and Puppeteer versions in the target image and test that image before relying on a version-specific workaround.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify browser installation and version alignment
- Check the runtime versions. The Puppeteer documentation pages consulted for this guide display version 25.12.0 and specify Node 22.12 or later. Match the requirements of the Puppeteer version you install rather than assuming an older Docker base remains supported.
- Confirm the install step ran during the image build. Modern package managers may block dependency install scripts. If Puppeteer’s browser download was skipped, explicitly install a compatible browser or configure the executable path.
- Check which package you use. Installing
puppeteerdownloads Chrome for Testing and, starting with Puppeteer v21.6.0,chrome-headless-shell.puppeteer-coredoes not download Chrome. - Keep versions deliberate. Puppeteer v20.0.0 moved to Chrome for Testing. Pin compatible Puppeteer and browser/image versions, then verify them when upgrading.
- Match distribution and architecture. The current system requirements document Chrome for Testing on Debian/Ubuntu and openSUSE/Fedora Linux for x64 and arm64. Confirm the relevant package manifest for your particular distribution and version.
Check process management and writable storage
- Run the container with
--initor use a custom init process to reap Chrome child processes. - Ensure the runtime user owns Puppeteer’s browser cache and any writable profile or configuration directories.
- For read-only containers, provide writable storage for Chrome’s profile, XDG configuration, and cache. A writable
/tmplocation or correctly owned mounted volume can serve this purpose. - Do not treat
--no-sandboxas a filesystem or dependency fix; it addresses a different failure and reduces browser isolation.
Common errors and what to change
| Symptom | Likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Missing library message or Chrome exits before Puppeteer connects | Unresolved Linux shared library | Run ldd on the container’s Chrome executable and install the matching distribution package. |
Could not find expected browser locally or executable ENOENT |
Browser download did not run, cache differs, or executable path is wrong | Check install scripts, cache location, runtime user, and browser executable configuration. |
No usable sandbox! |
Sandbox or container capability is unavailable | Use a supported sandboxed configuration; the official Puppeteer image documents SYS_ADMIN. |
chrome_crashpad_handler: --database is required or profile/cache startup failure |
Chrome cannot write its profile or runtime data | Set writable profile, XDG config, and cache paths, and verify directory ownership. |
| Headless shell lacks GPU acceleration | GPU acceleration was not enabled | Only when GPU compositing is needed, use --enable-gpu for chrome-headless-shell. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot without maintaining Chrome dependencies in your container, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request with a URL returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture; newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed too, and each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers identify the page verdict and whether a request was billed. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients.
