Set the viewport with page.setViewport() before navigating, then capture the page with page.screenshot(). This fixes the browser page’s layout dimensions; by default, the screenshot shows only the visible viewport, not the whole document.
Set the viewport before navigation
In Puppeteer 25.12.0, pass explicit width and height values to page.setViewport(). Add deviceScaleFactor when the output’s pixel density matters. Set the viewport before page.goto(): sites can react to viewport changes, and certain mobile or touch settings may cause a reload. See the Page.setViewport() API reference.

There is no universally correct size: select values that match the target browser layout or responsive test case. With a device scale factor of 1, the configured CSS viewport dimensions are not multiplied for a higher-density capture.

Choose what the screenshot should include
The viewport size controls the page’s content area for layout and rendering; it does not by itself mean “capture the entire page.” Puppeteer’s default screenshot is viewport-only. Use fullPage: true for the whole page, or clip to capture a region.

Use other screenshot options when needed
pathsaves the image to a file; Puppeteer infers the image type from the extension. PNG is the default type.typeselects an image format.qualityapplies to supported lossy formats, not PNG.omitBackground: trueomits the default white background, allowing transparency.captureBeyondViewportdefaults to false when no clip is specified. When a clip is specified, its default is true.
To capture a particular element instead of a page region, use ElementHandle.screenshot(). Puppeteer’s guide notes that it attempts to scroll the element into view if it is hidden.

Understand viewport size versus screen size
A page viewport is the content area used to lay out and render that page. It is distinct from the headless browser screen configuration. The Puppeteer screen-configuration guide documents an 800 × 600 default headless screen unless a window-size switch is specified; most page screenshot tasks only need an explicit page viewport. See Screen configuration.

Puppeteer’s connection default viewport is also documented as 800 × 600. page.viewport() returns the last viewport configured with page.setViewport(), or the default from connection options; it does not inspect the page’s actual viewport. Treat it as the configured value, not an independent verification of rendered dimensions. See ConnectOptions and Page.viewport().
Troubleshoot unexpected output
The image only shows the top or visible part of the page
This is the default behavior. Add fullPage: true if you need content below the fold. Keep the default when the goal is to compare a fixed viewport or test responsive layout.

The page layout does not match the intended dimensions
Set width and height explicitly before navigation. If you change viewport settings after loading, the site may respond to the change; some mobile or touch configurations may reload it. Choose a viewport matching the layout you are testing rather than assuming one size fits all.

Check the filename extension and any explicit type option. The file path extension determines the inferred image type, and PNG is the default.

page.viewport() reports the expected size, but the render still differs
The method reports Puppeteer’s configured viewport and does not check the page’s actual viewport. Also distinguish the page viewport from headless screen configuration; changing the latter is not necessary for most screenshot tasks.
