To track how an Indian railway website changes visually, capture the same page in the same state at different times, save each screenshot under a dated filename, and compare the images. This is a manual record of what appeared on the page—not train-running information, ticket status, or an official IRCTC change log.
What screenshots can—and cannot—track
A screenshot preserves the rendered appearance of a page at one moment. Keeping a dated series lets you review changes to its layout or visible content. The Government of India’s ticket-status service answers a different question: it requires a PNR to retrieve the current status of a booked ticket. The Ministry of Railways announced on 15 July 2026 that a beta version of the new IRCTC website would go live at 21:00 that day at https://www.irctc.co.in/eticket/. The ministry described it as an opportunity for users to experience the new look and feel and provide feedback, and said it had a clean interface and simplified experience. - Choose a page you can access appropriately. Record its exact URL and what you want to observe. Use a public page or a non-sensitive screen; avoid capturing personal or booking details that you do not want stored in image files.
- Keep the viewing conditions consistent. For each capture, use the same URL, browser, approximate window dimensions, zoom level, language, and page state. These controls make comparisons more useful; they are practical advice, not IRCTC requirements.
- Enable Firefox’s full-page screenshot control. Open Developer Tools, select Settings → Available Toolbox Buttons, and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page. The button can then capture the page to the browser’s Downloads directory. Mozilla documents this and other screenshot options in its Web Console documentation.
- Capture and preserve each date separately. Use a descriptive filename such as
irctc-page-name-2026-10-03.png. Do not reuse a filename when you mean to retain the earlier image: Mozilla notes that a new capture with the same filename can overwrite it. - Compare like with like. Inspect the relevant area at a readable size. Check that both images show the same page and state, then distinguish an actual layout or content change from transient material such as a rotating banner, date, status, or advertisement.
Use Firefox’s screenshot helper for repeat captures
Firefox’s Web Console :screenshot helper supports a filename, a delay, a full-page option, and an element selector. A delay can be useful when you need to capture a page after a menu or hover state appears; an element selector can limit the capture to the component you are following. Consult Mozilla’s helper documentation for the syntax and options available in your Firefox version. Keep using a distinct filename for every date so that a later capture does not overwrite the earlier one.

Make the comparison meaningful
- Compare the same URL and page state, not merely pages with similar names.
- Check the section or component of interest at readable size before interpreting small differences.
- Note the capture date and any relevant viewing conditions alongside the image; do not treat a visual difference alone as proof of why it happened.
- Allow for temporary content, including changing dates, statuses, banners, and advertisements, before concluding that the site’s layout changed.
There is no established standard interval or universal list of railway pages to monitor. Choose a cadence that suits your purpose and retain the captures you need to compare.
IRCTC context and browser compatibility
The Ministry of Railways said in its 15 July 2026 announcement that IRCTC handles an average of around 14.5 lakh tickets per day and that its website was first launched in 2002. IRCTC has a compatible-browsers page, but the version floors listed there are old. Do not use them as current recommendations. Use an up-to-date supported browser and consult current browser guidance if you encounter compatibility problems. The screenshot misses content below the fold
Use Firefox’s full-page screenshot control or the helper’s full-page option rather than capturing only the visible viewport. If you only need one component, use the element selector option instead.

A menu or hover state is missing
Set the page to the state you want before capturing. The helper supports a delay, which can give a menu or other transient state time to appear. Keep the interaction and timing consistent across captures.
A new image replaced the old one
Give each capture a unique, dated filename. Mozilla notes that reusing a filename may overwrite the previous screenshot.

The images look different, but the layout may not have changed
Check whether the captures differ in URL, browser, window size, zoom, language, or page state. Then inspect possible transient content such as a banner, date, status, or advertisement before treating the difference as a site update.
