For reliable Puppeteer screenshots in CI, wait for the page state your test actually needs—not just a fixed delay or a quiet network. Navigate, wait for an application-specific readiness signal, then capture a deliberately chosen page, element, or clipped region. Network idleness can help, but it does not prove that a component has finished rendering.
Choose a readiness condition that matches the page
Dynamic pages may fetch data, update components, animate, or continue making background requests after navigation. Use a wait condition that establishes what must be true for the screenshot under test.

| Wait method | What it establishes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Application-specific selector | A specified element exists, or meets the requested visibility condition. | A known UI marker indicates the relevant content is ready. |
| Locator | A Puppeteer interaction with an element; locator actions can wait for a stable bounding box over two consecutive animation frames. | The target moves or its layout must settle before interaction or capture. |
| Network idle | The network has been idle for the configured interval; the wait always lasts at least that idle time. | A quiet network interval corresponds to the page’s rendering lifecycle. |
These waits answer different questions. A selector can be visible while its content is still changing; network idle can occur while a visual update remains unfinished. For robust tests, pair an appropriate navigation condition with a meaningful application-owned signal.

Wait for the content your test is checking
Puppeteer’s Page.waitForSelector() API (25.12.0) waits for a selector to appear. Its visible and hidden options express DOM presence and CSS visibility conditions; they do not certify that arbitrary data or animation is complete. The documented default timeout is 30 seconds. Set a timeout appropriate to the test and let the failure identify the missing condition rather than masking it with a longer sleep.

Puppeteer recommends locators for selecting and interacting with elements. As documented in the Page interactions guide (25.12.0), locator actions can wait for a stable bounding box over two consecutive animation frames. That stability check can help when an element is moving, but it is not a substitute for checking application state such as loaded data.
Use network idle as a gate, not a visual guarantee
The Page.waitForNetworkIdle() API (25.12.0) resolves after network activity has been idle for the configured interval. Its documented default idleTime is 500 milliseconds, and the wait lasts at least that long. This is a network condition—not proof that a particular component has finished updating.
Some pages keep polling or otherwise issue background requests, so network idle may not be the right sole readiness condition. Conversely, a quiet network does not guarantee that fonts, animations, or application-driven visual changes are done. Use network idle when it fits the page’s behavior and pair it with a selector or other condition meaningful to the test.

Runnable example: wait, then capture
This example uses CommonJS Puppeteer code. It waits for navigation using networkidle2 as an initial gate, then waits for a page-specific marker before taking a full-page PNG. Replace the URL and selector with a real readiness signal in your application.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com/dashboard', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 60000,
});
await page.waitForSelector('[data-testid="dashboard-ready"]', {
visible: true,
timeout: 30000,
});
await page.screenshot({
path: 'dashboard.png',
fullPage: true,
type: 'png',
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The navigation condition is an example, not a universal signal of completed application rendering. If the application marker is sufficient and network idleness is not, choose a navigation condition that suits the page and rely on the marker for readiness. Keep the viewport, browser environment, target, and output settings consistent between runs.
Capture only the region the test needs
Puppeteer supports page screenshots and element screenshots. The Screenshots guide (Version: Next) demonstrates both. Screenshot options can select full-page capture or a clipped region; PNG is the default image type, according to the ScreenshotOptions API (25.12.0).

- Use a full-page screenshot when the test needs the whole document, including content below the viewport.
- Use a clip when a fixed viewport region is the intended comparison target.
- Use an element screenshot when the component alone matters; this avoids unrelated page regions changing the image.
An element screenshot scrolls its target into view if necessary and throws if that element detaches from the DOM, as documented by ElementHandle.screenshot() (25.12.0). If the component is replaced during rendering, wait for the final element state and obtain the handle only when it is ready.
const target = await page.waitForSelector('[data-testid="chart-ready"]', {
visible: true,
timeout: 30000,
});
if (!target) throw new Error('Chart did not become visible');
await target.screenshot({ path: 'chart.png', type: 'png' });
Make CI runs easier to diagnose
- Use meaningful readiness signals. Prefer a marker tied to the exact content under test over a generic page load event.
- Keep capture inputs stable. Set the viewport explicitly and choose the same capture scope and format for each run.
- Give waits finite timeouts. A failed selector wait should report that the expected state never arrived, rather than hanging indefinitely.
- Reduce irrelevant variation. Capture an element or clip instead of the whole page when unrelated content is outside the test’s scope.
- Interpret failures narrowly. A timeout means its condition was not met within the configured period; a detached-element error means the target left the DOM during capture. Neither alone identifies the underlying application defect.
Puppeteer documents API behavior, not identical pixels across operating systems, browser builds, fonts, GPU settings, or CI images. Choose and maintain the CI environment deliberately; the screenshot APIs do not promise cross-platform pixel identity or prescribe a pixel-diff tolerance.
Troubleshoot inconsistent or missing screenshots
The screenshot shows a loading state
The wait may only establish navigation or network idleness, not the application’s data-ready state. Add a selector or condition tied to the content being tested, and ensure it represents the finished state rather than merely an element’s initial appearance.

The selector wait times out
Check that the selector matches the rendered DOM and that the requested visibility condition is appropriate. Confirm that the page reached the expected route and that the application can load its data. Set a test-appropriate timeout explicitly; the documented waitForSelector() default is 30 seconds in Puppeteer 25.12.0.
The network-idle wait never resolves
Ongoing background requests can prevent the page from reaching the idle condition. If network silence is not a meaningful readiness signal for this page, use an application-specific condition instead of treating network idle as mandatory.

The image differs across CI runs
First verify that the same viewport, capture scope, format, page state, and target are used. Puppeteer does not guarantee identical rendering across different operating systems, browser builds, fonts, or GPU configurations, so keep those environmental inputs consistent before interpreting pixel differences.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Puppeteer use as the default waitForSelector timeout?
Puppeteer 25.12.0 documents a 30-second default; a test can configure a different timeout.
What is the default network-idle interval in Puppeteer?
Puppeteer 25.12.0 documents a default idleTime of 500 milliseconds; reaching it establishes network idleness, not visual readiness.
Does an element screenshot scroll the element into view?
Yes. Puppeteer’s ElementHandle.screenshot() scrolls the element into view if needed and throws if it detaches from the DOM.
