Playwright Screenshot Testing for React Apps with Vite

Use Playwright page screenshots or component testing to catch visual regressions in a React app built with Vite. Learn how to stabilize snapshots and investigate diffs.

Use Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() to catch visual changes across a Vite-powered React page. For a single component, mount it with Playwright component testing and compare its root locator instead. The key to useful results is a stable rendering environment: capture and compare with consistent browser and operating-system settings, control dynamic content, and review image diffs before updating a baseline.

Choose a page test or a component test

Pick the test boundary that matches the change you want to detect. A page screenshot covers the rendered page in a browser context, including surrounding layout and interactions. A component screenshot isolates one mounted React component, so unrelated gallery or page content is less likely to affect the result.

  • Test a page: use Playwright Test and toHaveScreenshot() on the page object.
  • Test a component: use Playwright component testing to mount the React component, then assert on its root locator. Playwright’s component guide describes using an existing Vite development server to serve the component gallery.

For a Vite app, these are complementary approaches: browser-level page tests exercise the app in its wider context; component tests focus visual assertions on a specific component. See Playwright’s component testing guide for the current setup and supported framework details.

Write a page-level screenshot test

In a Playwright Test project, add a test that navigates to the Vite app and captures the page. This example assumes the app is reachable at http://127.0.0.1:5173 when the test runs; configure your project’s web server or start Vite separately so that address is available.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('home page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:5173');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});

Run the test with your project’s Playwright Test command, commonly npx playwright test. On its first execution, Playwright reports that the reference image is missing and writes the baseline. Inspect that image, then commit it with the test. On later executions, Playwright captures the page again and compares it with the committed reference.

Baseline files are test inputs, not disposable output. Review changed images in code review, and generate and compare them under the same rendering conditions. Playwright’s visual comparisons guide explains the snapshot workflow and warns that screenshots may vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode.

Test one React component

When the question is whether a component’s appearance changed, mount that component through Playwright component testing and take the screenshot of its root locator rather than the whole gallery. This keeps the assertion closer to the component boundary and avoids capturing unrelated content.

Component testing has its own setup; follow the current Playwright component testing guide for React and Vite configuration rather than assuming a page-test configuration automatically enables component mounting. The guide describes an existing Vite dev server serving the gallery and shows screenshot checks against a mounted component root. Use the page-level pattern when you need app-wide context, routes, or surrounding layout to be part of the visual contract.

Make screenshot output deterministic

A screenshot assertion is meaningful only when the same inputs produce comparable pixels. Stabilize the page before increasing tolerances: use fixed test data, wait for meaningful content, control network responses, and avoid clocks, random values, or other changing content. If a genuinely volatile region cannot be fixed, hide or normalize it with screenshot styling or mask it deliberately.

  • Align environments: use consistent operating-system and browser versions, settings, and headless behavior for baseline generation and comparison, especially between a developer machine and CI.
  • Wait for the right state: navigate and wait for the content that defines the test, not an arbitrary delay when a meaningful selector or readiness condition is available.
  • Control data and requests: make test responses repeatable so timestamps, rotating content, and external services do not create noise.
  • Handle animation intentionally: screenshot assertions disable animations by default. Check the current API behavior and options if animation is part of what you need to verify.
  • Use masks or styles narrowly: exclude only content that is truly variable; otherwise a mask can hide a real regression.

The PageAssertions API documents screenshot behavior and options including PNG or WebP output, scale, animation controls, and management of dynamic page content. Check it alongside the API for the Playwright version installed in your project, since the official documentation is rolling rather than tied here to one release.

Set tolerances only for known rendering differences

Playwright exposes comparison controls such as maximum differing pixel count or ratio and a perceived-color threshold. They can help when small rendering differences are expected, but a looser threshold can also let a real UI change pass. First standardize the environment and remove nondeterminism; then set the narrowest tolerance that addresses a known source of harmless variation.

Consult the current SnapshotAssertions API for the available tolerance settings and their exact semantics. Do not treat a threshold as a substitute for a stable page or for reviewing what changed.

Diagnose a failed screenshot comparison

toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing the final image with the baseline. That retry behavior helps with settling pages, but it cannot make changing inputs deterministic. When an assertion fails, inspect the rendered output before deciding whether to change the UI, stabilize the test, or update the reference.

  1. Open the expected, actual, and diff images. Identify whether the difference is a genuine layout or style change, dynamic data, or rendering drift.
  2. Check the test state. Confirm that navigation succeeded, the expected content is visible, and the same data and network responses are used.
  3. Compare environments. Check browser/runtime and operating-system differences between the baseline run and the failing run, including CI headless settings.
  4. Use Playwright’s debugging tools. UI Mode or Trace Viewer can help inspect the failure; Trace Viewer presents screenshot film strips, action snapshots, logs, and source locations.
  5. Update only after review. If the visual change is intentional, regenerate and commit the baseline. If it is accidental or caused by unstable inputs, fix the application or test instead.

See the official Trace Viewer guide for its debugging views. Avoid blindly accepting all changed snapshots: updating the expected image changes what the test considers correct.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot as an asset or API response rather than a committed Playwright regression baseline, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. For example, save a screenshot of Stripe as WebP with cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Common failures and fixes

  • The reference image is missing: this is expected on the first run. Inspect the generated baseline and commit it if it represents the intended appearance.
  • It passes locally but fails in CI: align the browser/runtime and operating-system environment, and check differences in headless settings, test data, and network responses before adjusting tolerances.
  • The diff changes between runs: look for clocks, randomness, rotating content, animations, or external requests. Fix or control the changing input; mask only content that is inherently variable.
  • The page is captured before it is ready: wait for the meaningful page content or state used by the test rather than relying on an unrelated delay.
  • A snapshot update hides an unexpected change: restore or fix the application if the change was not intended. Accept and commit new references only after reviewing the diff.
