Puppeteer Screenshot Testing: How to Handle Cookie Banners

Use a targeted screenshot-only override to exclude a cookie banner from a visual baseline. For consent behavior, preserve the banner and test its real controls.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a visual regression screenshot that should exclude a cookie banner, hide or remove only the identified banner in that capture, then take the screenshot. For a consent test, leave the banner visible and use its real controls. Hiding the interface is not accepting or rejecting consent.

Choose the test you are actually running

Test intent What to do with the banner What the result establishes
Visual-only screenshot Hide or remove a verified banner element for the screenshot scenario. The capture excludes that element; it does not prove a consent choice was made.
Consent behavior Keep the banner and exercise its actual accept, reject, or preference controls. Assertions can verify the site’s observed UI and state for that interaction.

This distinction matters because a presentation override can leave the site’s consent state and scripts untouched. It is a testing distinction, not a legal assessment of consent requirements.

Hide a banner for a visual baseline

Inspect the page first and identify a stable, unique selector for the banner. Avoid broad selectors such as div or generic class names: an override that catches unrelated content can make a baseline misleading. Keep the override confined to the screenshot test, and document that the baseline intentionally excludes the banner.

The example below uses Puppeteer’s documented page.addStyleTag() method. Replace the example selector with one verified on the site under test. It waits for that element before hiding it, then waits for a meaningful page-specific readiness condition before capture.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const url = 'https://example.com';
const bannerSelector = '#cookie-consent'; // Replace with a verified selector.

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
  await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });

  // Confirm the expected banner exists before applying a screenshot-only override.
  await page.waitForSelector(bannerSelector, { timeout: 10_000 });
  await page.addStyleTag({
    content: `${bannerSelector} { display: none !important; }`
  });

  // Prefer a selector or state that represents this application's actual readiness.
  await page.waitForSelector('main', { visible: true });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'baseline.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Puppeteer documents Page.screenshot() for page captures and ElementHandle.screenshot() for a selected element. The latter attempts to scroll an element into view if it is hidden from the viewport. See the Puppeteer Screenshots guide.

If the banner’s markup interferes with layout even when hidden, remove only the identified node in the page context instead. This is more destructive than a style override, so use it only when the test specifically needs the node absent.

await page.waitForSelector(bannerSelector, { timeout: 10_000 });
await page.evaluate((selector) => {
  document.querySelector(selector)?.remove();
}, bannerSelector);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'baseline.png', fullPage: true });

The Page API documents addStyleTag() and evaluate() as available page methods. Check the API reference for the Puppeteer version installed in your project: the cited Screenshots and Page API documentation identifies version 25.12.0. Puppeteer Page API

Test acceptance or rejection through the real controls

When the test is about consent behavior, do not hide or delete the banner. Start from a controlled browser state, locate the site’s real control, click it, and assert the result the product promises—for example, that the banner closes and the expected application state changes. The selector and resulting state are site-specific; the official Puppeteer guidance does not define any website’s consent semantics.

const acceptSelector = '[data-testid="consent-accept"]'; // Site-specific.

await page.waitForSelector(acceptSelector, { visible: true });
await page.click(acceptSelector);
await page.waitForSelector('#cookie-consent', { hidden: true });

// Add an assertion for the site's documented or observed consent state here.

Do not treat the disappearance of the banner alone as proof of a valid stored choice unless that is the behavior your test is intended to verify. A site can represent consent in cookies, other browser storage, server state, or application-specific mechanisms.

Make browser state repeatable

Consent tests are easier to interpret when each run starts from a known state. Use browser- or BrowserContext-level cookie APIs to inspect, set, or delete cookies when relevant to the site’s implementation. Puppeteer’s cookie guide shows those approaches and notes that cookies may be set by either the page or the server. It also demonstrates document.cookie in page context, but that is not a universal substitute for browser-level setup.

Current Puppeteer guidance marks the Page-level cookies(), setCookie(), and deleteCookie() methods deprecated. Prefer the corresponding browser storage or BrowserContext APIs in current code, and check the guide for the version you use: the cited cookie guide is labeled “Next.” Puppeteer Cookies guide

  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

For a visual-only test, seed or clear state only if it is necessary to reach the intended page appearance. A screenshot override should not be described in reports as accepting consent. For a behavior test, set up a fresh state appropriate to the test, then let the user-facing controls make the choice.

Wait for the state that matters before capturing

Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2'. That is an example, not a guarantee that every application or consent manager has finished rendering: client-side code, delayed banners, animations, and lazy content can change after network activity settles. Wait for the specific selector or application state your screenshot depends on, and use a deliberate delay only when the page has a known timed transition.

For full-page captures, remember that the screenshot may include content below the initial viewport. If lazy-loaded images or sections are part of the baseline, ensure the application has loaded them before capturing. For a component-level regression, capture the target element instead of the whole page when that better matches the test’s purpose. Puppeteer Screenshots guide

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The banner still appears. Confirm the selector matches the rendered element after navigation and that the stylesheet is injected after the banner exists. If the banner is inside a shadow root or an embedded frame, a page-level selector may not reach it; handle the relevant context specifically rather than broadening the selector indiscriminately.
  • Other page content disappears. Your selector is too broad or matches multiple elements. Inspect matches in the page, then target a stable, unique banner container and assert the intended element was found before applying the override.
  • The banner returns intermittently. A delayed client-side render may occur after network idle. Wait for the banner or the application’s ready state explicitly, then apply the visual override or interact with the control.
  • The screenshot is blank or incomplete. Check that navigation succeeded and wait for a visible page-specific element before capturing. networkidle2 alone does not guarantee application readiness.
  • A consent test passes without a real choice. Ensure the setup does not pre-seed accepted state or hide the banner, and verify the intended control interaction plus the site-specific outcome.
  • Cookie setup does not affect the page. The site may use other storage or server-side state, or set cookies in a way your setup does not cover. Inspect the implementation and use the current browser or BrowserContext APIs supported by your installed Puppeteer version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use `networkidle2` as the only readiness check?

It is shown in Puppeteer’s screenshot example, but it is not a universal signal that a client-rendered page or delayed consent banner is ready. Wait for the state your test needs.

Does hiding a banner count as accepting cookies?

No. It changes the screenshot presentation, not necessarily the site’s consent state.
