How to Monitor CPU and Network Use on a Mac mini While Streaming to YouTube

To diagnose a Mac mini YouTube stream, check three views together: Activity Monitor for system-wide CPU and network activity, OBS for encoding performance and dropped frames, and YouTube Live Control Room for platform-side stream health. No one reading tells the whole story: Activity Monitor includes traffic from other apps, while OBS dropped frames point to delivery between your encoder and the streaming server.

Check CPU activity on the Mac mini

  1. Open Activity Monitor. Find it in Applications > Utilities, or search for Activity Monitor with Spotlight.
  2. Select the CPU tab. Watch the activity view while OBS is streaming. Apple defines User as CPU capability used by apps and their processes, System as capability used by macOS processes, and Idle as capability not currently in use. A busy User reading may point to OBS or another app; System activity reflects macOS work. Neither, by itself, proves the stream is failing. See Apple’s guide to CPU activity in Activity Monitor.
  3. Open a larger live view if useful. Choose Window > CPU Usage for current CPU activity or Window > CPU History to see recent activity over time. Apple also documents a live CPU graph in the Dock.
  4. Compare with OBS. If OBS reports encoding overload or choppy output, look for resource-heavy apps in Activity Monitor and follow OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guidance, which specifically recommends checking Activity Monitor on macOS.

Check network throughput in Activity Monitor

  1. Select Network in Activity Monitor while the stream is running.
  2. Read the rate as well as the totals. The summary includes packets in and out, packets per second, total data received and sent, and data received/sec and sent/sec. Apple describes the per-second figures as throughput. To graph throughput, choose Data from the graph menu; choose Packets to graph packet activity.
  3. Keep the reading in context. This is Mac-wide network activity, not a YouTube-only meter. Downloads, cloud sync, browsers, and other apps can contribute to the totals and rates. For details, see Apple’s network activity guide.
  4. Keep a glanceable view available. Choose View > Dock Icon > Show Network Usage to show a live network graph in the Dock.

Use OBS to distinguish local trouble from delivery trouble

Activity Monitor tells you what the Mac is doing; OBS adds stream-specific indicators. If OBS reports encoding overload, investigate local processing and competing apps. If its dropped-frame count rises, OBS says the connection to the streaming server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That is a network-delivery warning, not a direct measure of CPU load. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting page, dated September 30, 2024.

Check the configured bitrate against upload capacity measured under the conditions in which you will stream, and investigate the connection path if it is inadequate or unstable. Activity Monitor’s sent/sec value can provide context, but because it includes all apps and system traffic, it should not be treated as the exact OBS bitrate.

Check YouTube’s stream health

  1. Before the event, test upload capacity. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate before streaming.
  2. Run a representative test. Include audio and motion similar to the planned stream so the test reflects the workload more realistically than a static scene.
  3. Monitor Live Control Room while live. Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages for platform-side ingest information.
  4. Choose settings for the available connection. YouTube advises selecting encoder resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with the internet connection in mind. Its recommended bitrate ranges vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult the current YouTube live encoder settings and bitrate table for your intended configuration rather than relying on a single universal number.

Locate the bottleneck with three separate views

What you are checking Where to look What the signal can tell you
Local resource pressure Activity Monitor CPU pane and OBS performance indicators Whether macOS or apps are busy, and whether OBS indicates encoding performance trouble.
Network delivery Activity Monitor Network pane and OBS dropped-frame indicator Mac-wide traffic provides context; rising OBS dropped frames warn that the server connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate.
Platform ingest health YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages Whether YouTube reports a stream-health or ingest issue on its side.

These are distinct diagnostic views, not interchangeable measurements. A busy CPU graph does not establish a network problem, and a high Activity Monitor sent/sec value does not identify which app sent the data. Compare timing across the views: note whether OBS performance warnings, dropped frames, or YouTube health messages begin at the same time as a change in local CPU or network activity.

Troubleshoot common symptoms

  • OBS reports encoding overload or output is choppy: inspect CPU activity and identify resource-heavy apps; then use OBS’s encoding performance guidance. Do not infer that the connection is at fault from CPU activity alone.
  • OBS dropped frames increase: treat this as a stream-connection warning. Compare the configured bitrate with tested upload capacity and investigate the connection path, as described in OBS’s connection guide.
  • Activity Monitor shows high sent/sec but OBS looks healthy: remember that the Network pane includes other apps. Look for concurrent transfers before attributing all outbound traffic to the stream.
  • YouTube reports stream-health messages while local readings look ordinary: use Live Control Room’s platform-side diagnostics. Normal CPU or system-wide throughput readings do not rule out an ingest issue.
  • All three views look healthy but viewers report a problem: record the time, OBS indicators, Activity Monitor readings, and YouTube health messages. Those separate observations help narrow down where the symptom appears without treating any one metric as a complete diagnosis.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that stays live around the clock, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud rather than relying on the Mac mini to remain on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
