A factor above 1 renders more image pixels for the same CSS-pixel viewport, which can make the result look sharper when viewed at its intended size.
Set the device scale factor before navigation
Use Page.setViewport() to configure the CSS viewport dimensions and device pixel ratio before calling goto(). Then capture with Page.screenshot():

width and height describe the emulated viewport in CSS pixels. deviceScaleFactor sets the emulated device pixel ratio used for rendering. Increasing it can produce more pixels for that same CSS viewport—for example, a factor of 2 aims for twice as many output pixels per CSS-pixel dimension. Check the image’s actual dimensions rather than assuming a viewer displays it at 100%.

More pixels can improve apparent sharpness, but they also create a larger bitmap and may increase file size. This setting cannot restore detail missing from a low-resolution source image, and it does not correct every cause of blur.
Use screenshot options that match the problem
Choose PNG when diagnosing sharpness
Capture as PNG to avoid JPEG compression as a source of softness. The ScreenshotOptions interface documents quality, but that option does not apply to PNG. Changing it will not sharpen a PNG screenshot.

Keep clip scale separate
If you capture a clipped region, check its geometry and distinguish ScreenshotClip.scale from the viewport’s deviceScaleFactor. Clip scale applies to the screenshot clip and defaults to 1; it is not the control for emulating a higher-density viewport. See Puppeteer’s ScreenshotClip interface.

The screenshot API also supports full-page captures and clipped captures. For a single element, Puppeteer’s screenshot guide documents ElementHandle.screenshot(). These choose what to capture; they do not replace setting the viewport’s device scale factor. See the Puppeteer Screenshots guide.

Troubleshoot a screenshot that is still blurry
- Set the viewport first. Include
deviceScaleFactorinsetViewport()beforegoto(). - Use PNG for the diagnostic capture. This rules out JPEG compression as a source of softness.
- Inspect the output dimensions. Compare the actual bitmap dimensions with the CSS viewport. At a factor above 1, the output should have more pixels than the viewport dimensions; verify the file rather than relying on how an image viewer scales it.
- Check clip geometry and settings. If capturing a region, verify the clip coordinates and dimensions, and do not mistake clip
scalefordeviceScaleFactor. - Inspect the page and later processing. Low-resolution source images, CSS transforms, browser zoom, font rasterization, and downscaling after capture can affect perceived sharpness. The viewport setting addresses rendering resolution, not all of these causes.
