If a Puppeteer screenshot looks blurry as JPEG but sharp as PNG, JPEG encoding or its quality setting is a likely difference—but it is not proven until you compare files captured at the same pixel dimensions. Capture both formats with identical settings, inspect them at native size, and check for resizing after capture before changing your code.
Compare PNG and JPEG under identical capture settings
Start with a PNG control, then capture a JPEG without changing the viewport, device scale factor, clip, or full-page setting. Record both files’ pixel width and height. Compare them at native size; a viewer, content system, or messaging app may resize an image for display.

const png = await page.screenshot({
type: 'png',
fullPage: true,
});
const jpeg = await page.screenshot({
type: 'jpeg',
quality: 90,
fullPage: true,
});
This is a controlled comparison, not a guaranteed fix. The example uses a deliberate JPEG quality value for illustration, not a universal recommendation. Puppeteer documents quality from 0 to 100; it does not apply to PNG. See the ScreenshotOptions reference and supported image formats.
Interpret what the comparison shows
- PNG is crisp, JPEG is soft at matching dimensions: JPEG encoding or the selected quality is the likely cause. Try a higher quality and weigh the visible result against the file size you need. The documentation does not prescribe an ideal quality value or quantify the trade-off.
- JPEG has fewer pixels than PNG: Check capture dimensions, clipping, viewport configuration, and any resizing or recompression after capture. Changing JPEG quality cannot restore detail lost because the image has fewer pixels.
- Both formats look soft: Investigate the source page and assets, CSS-pixel versus device-pixel dimensions, viewport setup, and downstream image processing. JPEG is not the only plausible cause.
PNG is useful as a lossless control. JPEG is a lossy format in ordinary image-encoding practice, and Puppeteer exposes a quality setting for it; the cited API pages do not provide comparative size or sharpness benchmarks. WebP is also supported, but the documentation cited here does not establish how it compares for your page.

Make the output format explicit
Puppeteer’s screenshot type defaults to PNG. If you provide a path, Puppeteer can infer the type from the filename extension; explicitly setting type removes ambiguity about the requested encoding. Check the saved file itself rather than relying only on its name. The Page.screenshot() reference documents the method’s output: a Uint8Array by default, or a string when base64 encoding is requested.
await page.screenshot({
path: 'capture.jpeg',
type: 'jpeg',
quality: 90,
});
Check viewport and pixel dimensions
A page is laid out in CSS pixels, while the output image has pixel dimensions. Device scale factor and capture options can affect the resulting dimensions, so compare actual image dimensions rather than assuming the viewport width and height tell the whole story. Keep these settings fixed between the PNG and JPEG captures.

page.viewport() reports the viewport configured through page.setViewport() or the connection’s default viewport; it does not inspect the actual rendered viewport. Puppeteer documents that distinction in its Page.viewport() reference. If the output is unexpectedly small, inspect how the page was connected and configured as well as the screenshot call.

| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG looks soft; PNG is sharp | Were both files captured with the same options and pixel dimensions? | If dimensions match, raise JPEG quality and compare again at native size. |
| JPEG is smaller in pixel dimensions | Viewport, device scale factor, clip, full-page option, or later resizing | Hold capture settings constant and inspect the saved file before and after any processing. |
| Both files look blurry | Source assets, page rendering, capture dimensions, or downstream scaling | Use the PNG control and inspect the page and image-processing path separately. |
| File extension and expected encoding disagree | Whether type was inferred from the path or specified explicitly | Set type directly and verify the saved image. |
quality appears to have no effect |
Whether the screenshot is actually being saved as JPEG | Set type: 'jpeg'; Puppeteer’s quality setting does not apply to PNG. |
The available information does not identify the root cause in any particular case. The Puppeteer and browser versions, screenshot call, quality value, configured viewport and device scale factor, saved pixel dimensions, and any downstream image processing all matter.
