A high-bitrate source file does not automatically cause a YouTube 24/7 stream to buffer. Find where the delay occurs first: FFmpeg may be reading, decoding, filtering, or encoding too slowly—or at the wrong pace; YouTube may report an ingest problem; or the stream may reach YouTube normally while some viewers have playback trouble. Each calls for a different fix.
This guide separates those stages and walks through the checks in order, from file pacing to viewer latency. The cited FFmpeg and YouTube guidance was accessed October 3, 2026; verify the documentation and your installed FFmpeg version before changing a production stream.

First locate where the buffering starts
Follow the stream’s path: source-file read and decode → filters and encoding → muxing and network output → YouTube ingest → viewer playback. “Buffering” can describe trouble at any of these points. A source file’s bitrate, the encoded stream’s outgoing bitrate, and the connection’s upload capacity are separate variables.
- FFmpeg stage: Look for a stalled process, progress that falls behind the intended media clock, or errors while reading, decoding, filtering, or encoding.
- Network and ingest: Check whether the outgoing feed can be sent consistently and whether YouTube Live Control Room shows an ingest warning or error.
- Playback: If YouTube reports healthy ingest but only some viewers buffer, investigate latency mode and viewer playback conditions rather than changing the source-file read rate blindly.
Record the time of each incident and the exact FFmpeg output or YouTube health message. YouTube advises monitoring stream health and reviewing its messages during the event. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and stream-health guidance.

Check how FFmpeg paces the file
When FFmpeg reads a regular file, it can process the file faster than real time unless you limit the read rate. FFmpeg documents -readrate 1 as real-time pacing, equivalent to -re; its default -readrate 0 imposes no read-speed limit. The project describes these options as mainly useful for simulating a capture device when reading from a file. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
For a prerecorded file intended to play as a live stream, check whether your command applies real-time pacing. Do not add a low -readrate indiscriminately to an actual live or capture input: FFmpeg warns that limiting a live input can cause packet loss. Read-rate control concerns how quickly input media is ingested; it does not by itself fix a slow encoder or an undersized upload connection.
Measure whether processing keeps up
A correctly paced input can still outrun the machine’s ability to decode, filter, and encode. Observe FFmpeg’s progress during a representative run and compare its progress with the intended frame rate and media clock. Check the host’s workload at the same times, especially if the command applies computationally demanding filters or re-encodes the file.

-benchmarkreports CPU time and memory use at the end of a run. -benchmark_allreports timings during encoding and decoding stages.- A short or one-time benchmark does not establish that a system will remain stable for a 24/7 stream. Monitor a representative run, including the conditions under which the slowdown occurs.
These measurements can help distinguish a processing bottleneck from a read-rate or network issue; they do not, by themselves, identify a specific root cause.
Match the outgoing stream to YouTube’s live guidance
Check the actual outgoing codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations. Use the row for your specific codec and frame rate; do not treat a single bitrate as universal or substitute YouTube’s upload-file recommendations for live ingest settings.
| Example live configuration | YouTube-published bitrate range |
|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published live recommendations, not measurements of your connection or a guarantee that your FFmpeg host can sustain a stream. The guidance varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current YouTube live encoder settings table for your exact configuration.

Check bitrate mode and keyframes
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds, with no interval over 4 seconds. It says keyframes sent too infrequently can cause buffering and recommends a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
Use the health message to confirm whether keyframe cadence is implicated. If it is, check the actual output cadence after any frame-rate or encoder changes; a setting change does not guarantee the output GOP interval stayed as intended.
Test the actual upload path
The outgoing stream has to reach YouTube reliably. YouTube recommends running a speed test to measure upload bitrate and testing the stream before going live. Compare sustainable upload performance under representative operating conditions with the complete outgoing stream bitrate. If the connection cannot sustain it, reduce the outgoing bitrate or resolution and test again.

There is no universal upload-headroom percentage established by the cited guidance. A speed-test result is also a measurement, not a guarantee of continuous capacity throughout a 24/7 broadcast. Re-test if performance varies during the hours the stream is running.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When ingest is healthy but viewers still buffer
If Live Control Room indicates healthy ingest and FFmpeg is keeping pace, the remaining issue may be downstream of the encoder. YouTube cautions that lower latency may mean more playback buffering. Check the stream’s latency mode and consider whether its interaction requirements justify that trade-off; also investigate the playback conditions reported by affected viewers.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg progress falls behind or processing stalls | Input pacing, read/decode errors, filters, and encode progress during the same interval | For a regular file, confirm whether real-time pacing is intended. Measure processing performance and test a representative run; do not assume the file bitrate alone is responsible. |
| YouTube reports keyframes arriving too infrequently | Actual keyframe interval and GOP behavior in the outgoing feed | Set a 2-second keyframe interval, do not exceed 4 seconds, and use a closed GOP for optimal transcoding as YouTube advises. |
| YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health problem | Exact health message, outgoing settings, and upload performance at that time | Use the message to direct the check; compare codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s current live table, then test the actual upload path. |
| Only some viewers report buffering while ingest is healthy | Latency mode and affected viewers’ playback conditions | Investigate playback separately from FFmpeg’s file reading; lower latency can increase playback buffering. |
