A resolved page.goto() call does not guarantee that the page’s useful content has rendered. Check the navigation response, final URL, title, and expected DOM content first; then wait for a readiness condition tied to the content you intend to capture. A screenshot shows the page’s current state, so capture only after that state is ready.
Why a screenshot can be blank even when navigation resolves
page.goto() waits for a navigation condition; it does not verify that your application rendered the content you expect. The promise resolves with the main resource’s response, but Puppeteer’s documentation notes that headless shell can resolve for valid HTTP error statuses such as 404 and 500. In special cases—including about:blank and same-URL hash navigation—the response can be null. Check what loaded rather than treating a fulfilled promise as proof of success. See the Page.goto() API.

Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation followed by a screenshot and uses networkidle2 as an example wait condition. Network quiet is not a universal signal that a single-page application has finished rendering its useful content; some pages also keep network activity open. Prefer a page-specific readiness condition when one is available.

Run a baseline diagnostic before changing settings
Log the URL you pass to goto(), inspect its response and the resulting page, then wait for a meaningful element before capturing. Replace the illustrative selector below with one your application actually exposes.

const response = await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
console.log({
responseStatus: response?.status() ?? null,
finalUrl: page.url(),
title: await page.title(),
});
// Replace this with a selector that indicates your page is ready.
await page.waitForSelector('[data-page-ready="true"]');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
If there is no readiness marker, wait for a visible content element and verify its text or state. The Page API documents page inspection and screenshot methods; the readiness check is an application-specific diagnostic step.
Fixes by symptom
The response or final URL is not what you expected
- Log the exact input URL and
page.url()after navigation. Check for redirects, an unintended target, or a navigation toabout:blank. - When a response exists, inspect
response.status(). A fulfilled navigation can still lead to an HTTP error page; handle unexpected statuses explicitly. - If the response is
null, remember that this can be expected for documented special cases such asabout:blankor same-URL hash navigation. Inspect the final URL and DOM as well.
The DOM does not contain the application content
Inspect a small excerpt of page.content() or evaluate a known element’s text and visibility. If the expected content is absent from the DOM, debug navigation, redirects, application errors, or the page’s own rendering before changing screenshot options.

console.log((await page.content()).slice(0, 1500));
console.log(await page.locator('main').textContent().catch(() => null));
Choose a selector that matches your page; main is only an example. A selector that exists but is hidden or empty may not represent usable content, so check the state that matters to your capture.

The DOM has content, but the image appears blank
- Confirm that you call
screenshot()on the samePageobject you navigated. - Check viewport and emulation settings, especially if the page changes its layout at mobile sizes.
- If the expected content is inside a frame, verify that it is present and visible in the captured page.
- Confirm that the screenshot path or returned buffer is written correctly, and open the exact file your script produced.
- Use Puppeteer’s documented element screenshot workflow if you intend to capture a particular element rather than the whole page; see the screenshots guide.
It works with one headless or mobile setting but not another
Compare the same URL under controlled conditions: change only headless configuration or mobile emulation at a time, and keep the Puppeteer and browser versions fixed. Site behavior or headless detection is one possible investigation branch, not a proven universal cause. A report from 2017–2018 described blank screenshots in headless/mobile use, but it does not establish a current Puppeteer defect or show how common the issue is. Do not rely on a fixed sleep or slowMo as a durable fix based on an old report.

The problem differs between machines or deployments
Record the installed Puppeteer version and the browser revision it runs. Documentation surfaced for Puppeteer 25.12.0, but that is not evidence of the version installed in your project. Compare actual versions and launch settings in the environments that behave differently.
Choose a wait condition that reflects your page
networkidle2: A convenient initial wait, shown in Puppeteer’s screenshot example. It can be insufficient if the app renders useful content after network activity quiets down, or impractical if requests remain active.- A semantic selector: Wait for a known element that appears when the content you need is ready. This is more specific when the app exposes a reliable marker.
- An application readiness predicate: If your app publishes a ready state, wait for that state rather than guessing with a delay. The exact condition depends on the page.
Use the condition that corresponds to the screenshot’s purpose. Navigation completion and application readiness are separate checks.

Troubleshooting checklist
goto()resolves, but the status is an error: Inspect the response status and determine why the server returned that page.- The final URL is unexpected: Check the input URL, redirects, and
page.url(). - The expected element is missing: Inspect the DOM and investigate application rendering before focusing on screenshot output.
- The element is present but the output is blank: Confirm the captured
Page, viewport or emulation, frame context, and output file or buffer. - Only one environment fails: Compare installed Puppeteer and browser versions and test headless/mobile settings one change at a time.
- A fixed delay appears to help: Replace it with a selector or readiness condition that represents the content you need.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does `waitUntil: ‘networkidle2’` guarantee that a Puppeteer screenshot will not be blank?
No. It is an example wait condition, not proof that an application has finished rendering the content you need. Wait for a page-specific ready state or meaningful element.
Can `page.goto()` resolve when a page returns an HTTP error?
Yes. Puppeteer documents that headless shell can resolve for valid HTTP error statuses, including 404 and 500. Inspect the response status and resulting page.

No. Headless or mobile behavior may be worth comparing, but a historical 2017–2018 report does not establish a current, universal cause.
