Puppeteer Screenshot: How to Wait for a Web Font to Load

Await the page’s font set before capturing with Puppeteer; explicitly request a specific font when the page has not loaded it yet.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before taking a Puppeteer screenshot, wait for the page’s font set to finish loading and its layout to settle: await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready); Then call page.screenshot(). For a specific font that the page has not started using, request it with document.fonts.load() first.

Wait for fonts before taking a screenshot

Navigate to the page and let it apply the styles and content that use its web fonts. Then await document.fonts.ready inside the page context before capturing:

await page.goto(url);
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });

document.fonts is the current document’s FontFaceSet. Its ready promise resolves when font loading and layout operations are complete and no further font loads are needed. Puppeteer’s Page.evaluate() waits for a promise returned by the page function, so the screenshot call runs after that promise resolves. See Puppeteer Page.evaluate() and MDN FontFaceSet.ready.

Use a navigation wait when it suits the page

For a page whose initial rendering is driven by navigation, you can also wait for a navigation condition before fonts:

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });

networkidle2 is a navigation condition, not a font-readiness guarantee. Keep the explicit font wait; it answers a different question. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation followed by Page.screenshot(): Puppeteer screenshots.

Request a particular font explicitly

document.fonts.ready waits for fonts needed by the document, but it does not force a page to use a particular family. If the screenshot must include a specific font and text, request matching faces before awaiting readiness:

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
await page.evaluate(async () => {
  await document.fonts.load('16px "Example Sans"', 'Sample text 123');
  await document.fonts.ready;
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });

Replace Example Sans with the CSS family name and use representative text, including the characters needed in the capture. The CSS font shorthand identifies the request. The text argument can limit matching based on Unicode ranges, but it does not verify individual glyph coverage. FontFaceSet.load() returns a promise that fulfills with loaded faces or rejects if a font fails. Details: MDN FontFaceSet.load().

Choose the right font wait

Method What it does Use it when
document.fonts.ready Waits for used-font loading and layout to settle; does not itself request an unused font. The page’s styles and content already cause the intended fonts to be used.
document.fonts.load(font, text) Requests matching font faces, then returns a promise; it can reject on load failure. You need to explicitly request a particular family and text before capturing.
Puppeteer PDF option waitForFonts Waits for document.fonts.ready during PDF generation; documented default is true. You are generating a PDF with page.pdf(), not a screenshot.

Puppeteer documents waitForFonts on PDFOptions, not as an option to Page.screenshot(). Do not add it to screenshot options expecting it to delay the capture. The PDF documentation also notes that bringing a background page to the foreground with Page.bringToFront() might be necessary for its font wait: Puppeteer PDFOptions and Puppeteer Page.screenshot.

Troubleshoot a screenshot that still uses fallback text

  • Confirm the intended family is selected. Inspect the captured element’s computed font-family and relevant styles in the page context. A completed font set does not prove CSS selected the family you expected.
  • Check that the font is used by captured content. Unused declared faces may remain unloaded. Ensure the relevant styles and text are present before awaiting document.fonts.ready, or explicitly request the family with document.fonts.load().
  • Handle a rejected explicit load. If document.fonts.load() rejects, check the font resource and its CSS declaration. The ready promise indicates completion of loading and layout work; it does not establish that a requested font resource succeeded.
  • Check the characters in the capture. Include representative text in the explicit load request, but remember that the API’s text argument does not validate coverage of every glyph.
  • Do not treat network idle as font readiness. Even if navigation has reached its network-idle condition, await the document’s font set separately before the screenshot.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need an API-generated screenshot instead of managing Puppeteer in your own browser script, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. Its capture can accept cookie and consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents.
