Navigate to a suitable document milestone, then wait for the element or application state that proves the content you need is ready. Use a network-idle wait only when network quiet itself matters.
Why networkidle0 can hold up a screenshot
Navigation readiness and application readiness are different conditions. A network-idle wait checks network activity against a threshold for a required interval; it does not check whether the content in your screenshot is ready. If a page keeps making requests, the relevant content may already be rendered while the idle condition remains unmet. Increasing the timeout can simply make the same mismatch take longer to surface.

Puppeteer’s navigation API lets you choose a lifecycle condition for page.goto(). Its screenshot guide demonstrates networkidle2, but that is an example, not a guarantee for every page. Choose the wait based on what the screenshot must contain.

Use the wait that matches the screenshot

Puppeteer documents locator waits and waitForSelector() for element-oriented waits, and waitForFunction() for a function that must return a truthy value. Check the Page API for the exact behavior supported by your installed release.

Wait for the content that belongs in the image
Wait for a meaningful visible element
Use a selector tied to the content that makes the screenshot useful, not just a generic page shell:

Wait for an application-specific state
When the component exists before its data is finished, check a state that describes the actual result:

Keep network quiet only when it matters
If reduced traffic is an explicit requirement, separate navigation from the idle wait and bound that wait:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });waitForNetworkIdle() remains a network condition; it is not a substitute for checking page content. Puppeteer’s API states that it always waits at least the configured idle time. Verify option names and defaults against your installed version.

Capture a component instead of the whole page
For a screenshot of one component, wait for that component and capture its element handle:

Debug the exact call that stalls
- Log around each awaited call. Add a message before and after
page.goto(), each readiness wait, andpage.screenshot(). This identifies whether navigation, a later wait, or capture is the operation that hangs; they are separate API calls. - Change navigation to a suitable milestone. Try
domcontentloadedorloadwhen appropriate, then add the smallest meaningful selector or application-state wait. - Bound any remaining idle wait. Give it a finite timeout and decide whether a timeout should fail the capture or trigger a deliberate fallback. Confirm the installed version supports the options you use.
- Check that the condition matches the image. A visible shell is not necessarily loaded data, and a quiet network is not necessarily a correct render.
- For a component capture, wait for and screenshot the element. This uses an element-specific readiness signal and capture rather than waiting for the whole page.
Common failures and fixes
page.goto()times out undernetworkidle0: The page may not satisfy that network condition. Navigate with a lifecycle milestone, then wait for the needed content.- The selector wait succeeds but the screenshot is incomplete: The selected element may appear before its data or rendering is complete. Wait for a result count, completion state, or other application-specific signal.
waitForFunction()never resolves: Check that the selector and expected value exist on the page and that the condition can become true. Use a finite timeout where appropriate.waitForNetworkIdle()still times out: It is still waiting on network idleness. If that condition is not essential, replace it with an element or application-state wait; otherwise, inspect the installed API’s supported options and handle timeout intentionally.- The element screenshot misses the target: Confirm the selector identifies the intended element and that it is available before capture. The documented element screenshot behavior scrolls the element into view by default if hidden.
