When a YouTube radio stream goes silent, check the OBS audio meter while the problem is happening. If it is flat, troubleshoot the source and capture path; if it is moving, check OBS’s stream output and compare a local recording with YouTube playback. That sequence helps locate whether the silence starts before OBS, inside OBS, or after the stream leaves your encoder.
Start with the OBS meter: is it moving?
Keep the relevant source visible in the active OBS scene and watch its mixer meter at the moment listeners hear silence. This is the quickest way to split the diagnosis: a flat meter points to audio not reaching OBS, while a moving meter means capture is happening and the next checks belong downstream.

The exact source and controls depend on how the radio audio enters OBS, your operating system, and your OBS version. It might come from an application, a media or browser source, or a physical audio device. Do not assume one particular fault from the symptom alone.
If the meter is flat, find where capture stops
- Confirm the radio is still playing. Check playback in its originating app or device, then make sure the expected source is present in the scene that is actually live.
- Check the input or device. For physical audio, verify the connection and device controls. For application audio, confirm the correct app or source is selected. OBS recommends starting with the device, then checking the operating system’s mixer and the individual application’s volume. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
- Check system and application levels. Make sure neither the operating-system mixer nor the originating app has muted or reduced the signal.
- Temporarily disable source filters for diagnosis. OBS’s technical guide explains that the input indicator is before filters in the signal path. If filters are suppressing the audio, an input indicator can still help distinguish incoming sound from what reaches later processing. See OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details.
- Recheck the meter. If it remains flat, keep investigating playback, device selection, connection, application/system volume, and source configuration before changing YouTube settings.
If the meter moves, check OBS’s stream output
A moving meter shows that sound is reaching OBS, but it does not by itself prove that sound is included in the encoded stream. Check the source and output state:
#1 Best Overall
- [XLR Mic Input] One XLR microphone input interface is set on the gaming audio mixer, which is great to up your audio quality with your XLR setup. The XLR mixer is a stepping stone to upgrade your live streaming. Audio mixer offered built-in 48V phantom power which opens up more choices for mics. Directly use it with your condenser microphone but do not solve added peripherals. (NOT available for USB mic)
- [Individual Channel Control] Gaming audio mixer for one mic recording with smooth volume slider fader take your streaming recording to a whole new level with full pleasure. Four independent channels set on the DJ mixer give audio volume of the MICROPHONE, LINE IN, HEADPHONE, and LINE OUT channels individual control. Configurable on the PC audio mixer instead of just operating on your game or streaming software.
- [Mute and Monitor] The front mute and monitor buttons but not at the back, make it easier to get the audio interface use. Ability to mute audio, the audio mixer for streaming prevents background noise from damaging your live broadcast. Real-time feedback between speaking and hearing will not distract your attention, which encourage you to speak more confidently. The sturdy-built control button allow you to operate freely and easily during live streaming.
- [Sound Effects] The computer sound mixer supports four pre-recorded customized button that can be recorded and activated at the press of button to post production. 6 kinds of voice changing modes change your output style. 12 auto tune changes the tone of your voice. The podcast mixer being able to add different and fun effects is a huge bonus for your streaming or game voice.
- [Controllable Vibrant RGB] RGB button on the audio mixer DJ meets different live streaming themes. Lights on the video mixer is vibrant but not harsh on your eyes. Flowing or frozen RGB color rotation in a decent pace presents a greatly strong impression as a "light show" to your audience. Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.
- Confirm the source is not muted and its fader has not been lowered.
- Confirm the source is routed to the stream output and that the selected stream audio track includes it. OBS’s labels and mixer layout vary by release; its interface includes a warning when an output has no tracks selected. The current English locale strings can be seen in the OBS Studio English locale source file.
- Do not treat monitoring as proof of stream output. Monitoring controls listening through a configured monitoring device; stream output determines whether the audio reaches the encoded program. You may hear monitored audio even when the stream routing or track selection is wrong.
Keep the final stream or recording output below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping. Raising every level is not a reliable diagnostic method.
Compare a local recording with YouTube playback
Make or inspect a recording from the time the silence occurs. This separates an OBS-side problem from a problem farther along the path:

| What you find | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The local recording is also silent | The fault is likely in capture, OBS processing, or output configuration. | Return to the meter, source state, filters, mute/fader, routing, and selected stream track. |
| The local recording has audio, but YouTube playback does not | OBS is producing audio locally; investigate delivery to YouTube or playback of the live stream. | Check YouTube Live Control Room for reported encoder errors and compare the encoder output with the local archive. |
| The stream looks and sounds healthy in the encoder, but the YouTube result is silent | An outbound connection or platform-side delivery issue is possible. | Use YouTube’s live-stream diagnostics and check whether the problem affects viewers on different networks. |
YouTube’s guidance is to inspect the stream in the encoder, look for faults in the local archive, and use dashboard errors to narrow down delivery trouble. It notes: “If your stream looks and sounds healthy, there may be an issue with your outbound Internet connection.” See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

If sound stops only after the stream has been running for a while, perform the meter and recording checks while it is silent. Note whether the source itself is still playing and whether OBS still receives it. A source restart, device sleep, or network fault may be worth testing only if it fits your setup; the symptom alone does not establish any of them.

- Equipped with a single mic input (XLR or ¼"), two LINE inputs for guitar and keyboard, and USB-C input for connecting to a computer
Also note whether one viewer reports silence or whether viewers on different networks hear it. Combined with meter and recording observations, this helps separate likely causes:
- Flat meter: investigate the source, device, system/application levels, connection, or filters.
- Moving meter but silent local recording: investigate OBS processing and stream/record output routing.
- Audible local recording but silent YouTube playback: investigate encoder errors, outbound connectivity, and YouTube delivery.
- Only one viewer affected: compare playback on another device or network before changing the broadcast configuration.
Check audio channel format only when the symptoms point to it
Channel layout is not the first assumption for a sudden silence. YouTube says live ingestion supports mono, stereo, and 5.1; other channel configurations may convert unreliably to stereo. A radio stream is often stereo, but verify your actual output rather than assuming its format.

If you are intentionally sending 5.1 audio, YouTube documents a 48 kHz sample rate and 384 Kbps audio bitrate, along with compatible encoder and protocol settings. These are 5.1-specific requirements, not a general repair for stereo radio silence. See Stream 5.1 surround sound audio on YouTube.
Validate the repair before relying on a long stream
- Make a normal test recording using the scene, source, and settings you intend to use.
- Listen to the recording from beginning to end, including the point in the session when silence previously appeared.
- Check the actual YouTube stream and confirm that playback is audible there as well.
- If silence returns, note whether the OBS meter is flat or moving and whether the local recording is silent. Those observations tell you which part of the path to inspect next.
OBS’s mixer guidance recommends recording a session as you normally use it and listening to the resulting file before going live. Its Audio Mixer Guide, published 2026-04-03, describes meter monitoring as something to keep an eye on while other settings should generally be configured and left alone: “Most of the time, you want to keep a close eye on the meters. The rest should be ‘set once run forever’.”
