Puppeteer evaluate() vs. evaluateHandle(): What’s the Difference?

Use Puppeteer evaluate() for values in Node.js and evaluateHandle() when you need a handle to a page-side object such as a DOM element.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

page.evaluate() returns the result of a function as a value you can use in Node.js. page.evaluateHandle() returns a handle to the result as an object that remains in the page context. Use the first for data; use the second when you need to keep or pass around a page-side object, such as a DOM element.

How the return values differ

Puppeteer’s API documentation puts the distinction simply: “The only difference between page.evaluate and page.evaluateHandle is that evaluateHandle will return the value wrapped in an in-page object.” Puppeteer API documentation: Page.evaluateHandle()

What you need Use What you receive
A string, number, boolean, or object data to use in Node.js page.evaluate() The evaluated result as a value
A reference to an object in the page, for further inspection or use in another page function page.evaluateHandle() A JSHandle, or an ElementHandle when the result is a DOM element

The API types express the same difference: evaluate() resolves to Promise<Awaited<ReturnType<Func>>>, while evaluateHandle() resolves to Promise<HandleFor<Awaited<ReturnType<Func>>>>. See the evaluate() API and evaluateHandle() API.

Use evaluate() to bring data into Node.js

Return only the information your Node.js code needs. For example, this gets the current document title as a string:

const title = await page.evaluate(() => document.title);
console.log(title); // A string available to Node.js

This is the straightforward choice for reading page data that you will process or store in your script. It does not give you a persistent handle to the original page-side object.

Use evaluateHandle() to keep a page-side reference

When you need to retain an object in the page context—for example, to inspect it in a later evaluation—request a handle:

const bodyHandle = await page.evaluateHandle(() => document.body);
const html = await page.evaluate(body => body.innerHTML, bodyHandle);
await bodyHandle.dispose();

Puppeteer permits handles to be passed as arguments to evaluation functions. In this example, bodyHandle is passed into evaluate(), which reads the body’s innerHTML; the handle is then disposed of. Puppeteer’s evaluateHandle() example

When the result is a DOM element

If the function passed to evaluateHandle() returns an element, Puppeteer represents it as an ElementHandle. That lets you perform element operations such as clicking it:

import type { ElementHandle } from 'puppeteer';

const button = await page.evaluateHandle<ElementHandle>(() =>
  document.querySelector('button'),
);
await button.click();
await button.dispose();

The generic type shown here follows the Puppeteer documentation’s TypeScript example. For ordinary selector-based element lookup, a selector API or locator may communicate your intent more directly; this comparison is about the kind of result evaluation returns, not the best way to locate every element.

Both methods wait for returned promises

Either method waits for a Promise returned by the function to resolve. Promise support is not a reason to choose one over the other; choose according to whether you need the resolved value or a handle to the resolved page-side object. evaluate() API · evaluateHandle() API

Handle cleanup and extracting values

Dispose of handles when you are finished

A JSHandle keeps its referenced page-side object from being garbage-collected until the handle is disposed. Call dispose() when you no longer need it. Puppeteer also auto-disposes handles when their associated frame navigates away or the parent context is destroyed. Puppeteer API documentation: JSHandle

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use jsonValue() when you need serializable data

A handle is not a plain Node.js object. Call handle.jsonValue() to obtain the serializable portions of the referenced object. This can fail if circularity prevents serialization, and it does not call the object’s toJSON() method. If your goal is simply to get data in Node.js, returning that data directly with evaluate() is often the clearer path. Puppeteer API documentation: JSHandle.jsonValue()

A practical decision rule

  • Choose evaluate() when you need a result value for Node.js.
  • Choose evaluateHandle() when you need to retain or pass a page-side object.
  • If the handle refers to an element, use its ElementHandle operations where appropriate.
  • Dispose of a handle when you are done with it; use jsonValue() if you need its serializable data.
