defaultBrowser and browser.defaultBrowserContext() refer to different things. The first is a Puppeteer configuration property that selects the browser Puppeteer uses; its documented default is chrome. The second is a method on an already launched or connected Browser instance that returns its default browsing context. Use the property to configure browser selection and the method to get the default context.

There is no defaultBrowser() method in the current official API reference. The parentheses in that spelling likely mix up the configuration property and the context method.
How do I get the default browser context in Puppeteer?
Launch Puppeteer, call browser.defaultBrowserContext(), then create pages from the returned context if needed. The method returns a BrowserContext. Puppeteer’s API documentation states: “The default browser context cannot be closed.”

defaultBrowser is a configuration property, not a method to call on a browser instance. The current Puppeteer configuration reference lists it as an optional SupportedBrowser property and documents chrome as the default. The PUPPETEER_BROWSER environment variable can override the setting. See the Puppeteer configuration reference for the supported configuration details.
This choice determines the browser Puppeteer uses; it does not return a browsing context. For the context inside a running browser, call browser.defaultBrowserContext(). The current official API references checked show configuration documentation version 25.12.0 and default-context documentation version 25.11.0; adjacent context and page references show 25.12.0.

When should you create a separate context?
Use the default context when pages should share the browser’s default session. Create another context when you need session isolation, such as separate cookies or local storage. Puppeteer describes each BrowserContext as an individual user context; contexts isolate storage including cookies and localStorage. In Chrome, non-default contexts are incognito. The default context can also be incognito if Chrome is launched with --incognito.
Create and close an isolated context

Common mistakes and fixes
- Calling
browser.defaultBrowser(): This confuses the configuration property with the context method. UsedefaultBrowserin configuration to select a browser, or callbrowser.defaultBrowserContext()to obtain the default context. - Trying to close the default context: Puppeteer documents it as non-closable. Close the
Browserinstance instead, or close a separately created context. - Expecting a new page to have isolated cookies: A page made with the default context is in that context. Create a new one with
browser.createBrowserContext(), then callnewPage()on it. - Expecting context creation to select another browser: Browser selection is configuration; context creation separates sessions within the browser already in use.
