There is no universal best replacement for Playwright. Choose by the browser and browser fidelity you need, whether you want a complete test runner or a lower-level automation library, your language and remote-execution requirements, and the cost of changing your existing test setup.

How to choose a Playwright alternative

Start with the constraints that are hardest to change, then compare tools against the work your tests actually do. Official documentation describes capabilities, but it does not establish a neutral speed ranking across these products. Measure your own suite in the CI environment you plan to use before choosing on performance.

  • Browser fidelity: List the exact browsers, branded channels, operating systems, and browser-specific behavior your users depend on. Engine coverage is not identical to testing a branded browser.
  • Test architecture: Decide whether you need fixtures, assertions, reporting, isolation, parallel execution, and artifacts included, or prefer an automation library that you can combine with your own runner.
  • Language and infrastructure: Account for the language bindings, browser drivers, remote sessions, grids, and CI setup your team already uses.
  • Debugging and isolation: Check how tests are launched and inspected locally, how state is isolated, and what evidence is available when a test fails.
  • Migration cost: Inventory locators, assertions, fixtures, setup code, and CI jobs. Similar browser-control APIs do not guarantee a drop-in replacement for the whole test workflow.

Playwright’s baseline—and the Safari distinction

Playwright documents projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, as well as branded Chrome and Edge channels and mobile device emulation. Its browser binaries are version-coupled to Playwright releases, so teams should check the supported browser versions and operating systems against their deployment targets. WebKit is not branded Safari: Playwright describes its build as derived from the latest WebKit main branch. For the closest Safari experience, its documentation recommends running WebKit on macOS in cases such as video playback. If Safari-specific behavior is a release requirement, validate the exact browser and operating system you ship to rather than treating WebKit coverage as identical to branded Safari coverage. Playwright browser documentation

Playwright positions Playwright Test as its first-party runner, with fixtures, reporters, parallelism, isolation, and artifact collection. Its migration guidance also recommends locators and web-first assertions, and notes that auto-waiting can make explicit waits unnecessary in many cases. Those are Playwright’s descriptions of its own workflow, not independent comparative results. Playwright Test documentation · Playwright’s Puppeteer migration guidance

Compare the main alternatives

Option What its official documentation establishes Why evaluate it Check before adopting
Cypress Cypress describes its platform as covering end-to-end, component, and accessibility testing. The locally installed Cypress App is free and open source; Cypress Cloud is a separate paid service for recording runs, results, and analytics. Cypress product overview Consider it if you want an integrated front-end testing workflow and local interactive use. Confirm the required browser matrix and whether your workflow needs paid Cloud features. Product positioning is not a neutral comparison of outcomes.
Selenium Selenium documents WebDriver language bindings and browser-specific implementations, local or remote sessions using Selenium Server, and WebDriver BiDi event streaming. It identifies WebDriver as a W3C Recommendation. Selenium WebDriver documentation Consider it if you have existing WebDriver investment, need language flexibility, or rely on remote browser execution. Plan for the chosen language binding, browser driver, grid or server, wait strategy, and the test runner and reporting you will use around WebDriver.
Puppeteer Puppeteer is a JavaScript library for controlling Chrome or Firefox over the DevTools Protocol or WebDriver BiDi; it runs headless by default. The standard puppeteer package downloads compatible Chrome, while puppeteer-core does not. Puppeteer documentation Consider it for focused JavaScript browser-control tasks when you want to choose your own test architecture. Verify exact browser support, and account for the runner, reporting, isolation, and CI workflow needed for a full suite. Package managers that block install scripts can prevent automatic browser downloads.
WebdriverIO Its getting-started documentation covers version 9.x and later, a setup wizard, a test-runner route, standalone automation, and recording actions to generate test scripts. WebdriverIO getting-started documentation Consider it if its configured runner or standalone automation fits your JavaScript tooling. Check current detailed documentation for the particular browsers, languages, mobile targets, and services you require; the getting-started guide alone does not establish a complete support matrix.

Which alternative fits which need?

Choose Cypress for a local, interactive front-end workflow

The Cypress App is the local open-source option; Cloud is separate and paid for recording runs, presenting results, and analytics. Decide whether the local workflow covers your needs or whether Cloud capabilities belong in your budget, then check the required browser matrix. Cypress characterizes its platform as able to test anything that runs in a browser and surface insights into test-suite health; treat that as Cypress’s own product description, not independent validation. Cypress product overview

Choose Selenium when WebDriver or remote sessions are central

Selenium is a strong candidate to evaluate when your organization already has WebDriver bindings and infrastructure or needs browser control locally and through Selenium Server. Its documentation describes WebDriver BiDi as a bidirectional WebSocket protocol for streaming and reacting to events such as network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors. Confirm the support and maturity you need for each browser and binding. Selenium WebDriver documentation

Choose Puppeteer for a library, not a turnkey test platform

Puppeteer provides browser-control APIs rather than positioning itself as a complete test runner. If you adopt it for an end-to-end suite, choose and integrate the runner, assertions, reporting, isolation, and CI strategy yourself. The standard package’s browser download and the non-downloading puppeteer-core package also have different installation implications. Puppeteer documentation

Playwright’s migration guide says many Puppeteer APIs can be used largely as is, while recommending migration from ElementHandle patterns to locators and web-first assertions. Treat that as useful guidance from the receiving project, not a guarantee that your suite can migrate without rewriting setup or workflow code. Playwright’s Puppeteer migration guidance

Evaluate WebdriverIO against the full requirements

WebdriverIO documents a wizard-based setup, runner, standalone mode, and action recording. Those are useful evaluation starting points, but validate your exact browser, service, and language needs against the current detailed documentation before committing. A practical evaluation and migration process

  1. Write down release-critical targets. Record browsers and branded channels, operating systems, mobile requirements, and browser-specific features such as media playback.
  2. Classify your current stack. Separate browser-control calls from runner features: fixtures, assertions, retries, parallelism, reporting, artifacts, and isolation.
  3. Choose a representative slice. Include a normal flow, an asynchronous interaction, a browser-sensitive case, and a test that is difficult to debug. Use the same application state and assertions for each candidate.
  4. Run it in the real environment. Use the CI image, browser versions, and remote-execution setup you expect to keep. Track setup failures and debugging effort as well as duration; documentation reviewed for these tools does not supply comparable independent speed results.
  5. Estimate migration work. Identify API changes, assertion semantics, test isolation assumptions, browser installation, drivers, and CI configuration that would need to change.
  6. Verify operational and commercial dependencies. Check current version support, browser and OS combinations, any remote execution costs, and whether optional services such as Cypress Cloud are required.

ScreenshotNeo for screenshots outside the test runner

If the job is to capture rendered web pages for documentation, previews, or an AI agent—not to replace browser assertions and end-to-end tests—try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a Playwright test-runner replacement. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; supported options include full-page capture, CSS-selector element capture, viewport and device settings, custom CSS or JavaScript, and PDF settings. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Or skip the browser setup:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Common problems to check

  • Playwright WebKit passes, but Safari behaves differently: Playwright’s WebKit is not branded Safari. Test the target Safari environment, including macOS when the behavior under test requires it. Playwright browser documentation
  • Puppeteer cannot find its browser after installation: The standard package normally downloads compatible Chrome; puppeteer-core does not. If package-manager policy blocks install scripts, arrange browser installation explicitly and verify the executable expected by your setup. Puppeteer documentation
  • A library works locally but the suite lacks reports or isolation: Browser-control APIs do not automatically provide a complete test workflow. Add and configure the runner, assertions, reporting, and isolation your team requires.
  • Remote sessions or event streaming are missing: Check whether your chosen Selenium binding and server setup meet the need; the Selenium documentation describes local and remote WebDriver sessions and BiDi, but implementation details depend on the selected browser and binding. Selenium WebDriver documentation
  • Action recording is available but a needed browser or service is unclear: WebdriverIO’s getting-started guide is not a full support matrix. Verify that specific requirement in its detailed current documentation before building around it. WebdriverIO getting-started documentation
  • A claimed speed advantage does not appear in CI: Do not rely on generic rankings; compare the same representative tests on the same CI hardware, browser versions, and remote setup.
