A Puppeteer CoverageEntry is a report for one script or stylesheet. Its url identifies the resource, text contains its source, and ranges mark source positions recorded as covered while coverage was running. JavaScript and CSS use separate recorders, and the results describe only activity observed during the recording interval—not every way the code might run.
What a Puppeteer coverage entry contains
Puppeteer’s CoverageEntry interface has three fields:

url: the URL associated with the script or stylesheet.text: the resource’s source content.ranges: covered start and end positions within that source text.
A JavaScript coverage entry describes a script; a CSS coverage entry describes a stylesheet. The range coordinates are source positions, not line numbers. Use the returned source text to interpret them.

How to collect JavaScript and CSS entries
Start coverage before the page activity you want to measure, then stop it after that activity. This example follows Puppeteer’s documented sequence of starting both recorders, navigating, and collecting the arrays:

await Promise.all([
page.coverage.startJSCoverage(),
page.coverage.startCSSCoverage(),
]);
await page.goto('https://example.com');
const [jsCoverage, cssCoverage] = await Promise.all([
page.coverage.stopJSCoverage(),
page.coverage.stopCSSCoverage(),
]);
const entries = [...jsCoverage, ...cssCoverage];
Here, page is an already-created Puppeteer Page. The stop methods resolve to arrays of entries, which you can keep separate by resource type or combine for processing. The official Coverage API reference documents the recorder methods and collection pattern.
Choose the recording interval deliberately
Anything that happens before the recorder starts or after it stops is outside the report. If you want to measure interactions as well as initial page load, start coverage first, perform those interactions while it remains active, and then stop it. A single run shows observed execution in that interval; absence from the ranges does not prove code can never execute.

How to read covered ranges
Each range gives start and end positions in text. Puppeteer’s documented example calculates used bytes by summing range.end - range.start - 1 for every range, then divides by the source text length:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →function usedBytes(entry) {
return entry.ranges.reduce(
(total, range) => total + range.end - range.start - 1,
0,
);
}
function usedPercentage(entry) {
return entry.text.length === 0
? 0
: (usedBytes(entry) / entry.text.length) * 100;
}
This mirrors the formula in the API example; it is a source-position calculation, not a line-count calculation. Treat the percentage as a summary of the reported ranges for that capture, rather than a universal measure of how much code is useful. Puppeteer’s CoverageEntry documentation and Coverage API reference provide the field and calculation details.

Options that change what appears in JavaScript coverage
The current startJSCoverage reference labels its page version 25.10.0 and documents these defaults. Puppeteer’s interface documentation labels version 25.9.0; version labels can differ across documentation pages, so check the live reference for the version you use.
| Option | Documented default | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
resetOnNavigation |
true |
Coverage resets on navigation by default. Review this option if the workflow spans navigations and you need earlier activity retained. |
reportAnonymousScripts |
false |
Anonymous scripts, including scripts created through eval or new Function, are excluded by default. Enabling this reports them with a debugger://VM URL unless a sourceURL comment supplies one. |
includeRawScriptCoverage |
false |
The raw script coverage data is not included by default. |
useBlockCoverage |
true |
Block coverage is enabled by default. The reference distinguishes this from function coverage. |
CSS has a separate omission case: Puppeteer’s Coverage reference says dynamically injected style tags without sourceURL comments are excluded. When expected entries are missing, check resource type, anonymous or dynamically injected content, source URL annotations, navigation behavior, and the interval you recorded.

What coverage entries can—and cannot—tell you
- They can show: which reported resource is associated with the entry, its source text, and the positions marked covered in that capture.
- They cannot establish from one run: that unobserved code is unreachable or unnecessary. A different route, user action, state, or navigation may exercise it.
- They may omit: anonymous JavaScript under the default setting and dynamically injected CSS without a sourceURL, as described in Puppeteer’s API documentation.
- They are not automatically Istanbul reports: Puppeteer’s Coverage API reference points to puppeteer-to-istanbul for converting Puppeteer coverage data into an Istanbul-consumable format.
Troubleshooting missing or surprising entries
No entries or unexpectedly low coverage
- Confirm the relevant recorder started before the code ran and was stopped after the activity you intended to include.
- Check that you used JavaScript coverage for scripts and CSS coverage for stylesheets.
- For multi-navigation flows, account for the documented
resetOnNavigation: truedefault. - Check whether code is anonymous JavaScript or injected CSS without a
sourceURL; those cases can be omitted by default. - Exercise the page states and interactions that matter. A capture reports observed use, not all possible use.
Ranges do not match expected line numbers
Ranges use source positions, not line numbers. Map their offsets against the entry’s text; do not interpret a start or end value as a source line.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Coverage disappears after navigation
Review resetOnNavigation in the JavaScript coverage options and choose behavior appropriate to the flow. The documented default resets on navigation, so a report may not represent activity accumulated across multiple navigations in the way you expected.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Puppeteer coverage entry contain the full source code?
Yes. Its text field contains the script or stylesheet source associated with that entry.
Are Puppeteer ranges line numbers?
No. They are start and end positions in the entry’s source text.
Can I use Puppeteer coverage entries as proof that code is unused?
No. Entries show what was observed during a particular recording interval; other interactions or page states may exercise code not covered in that run.
