Start with the transit agency’s official website, then check the exact station and lot page, its latest parking status and timestamp, and any station access alerts. Confirm the rules for that specific facility—hours, fees, payment, permits and time limits—because station parking is not governed by one universal policy. Check again shortly before you leave: a status report is a snapshot, not a reserved space.
Find the official page for the exact station and lot

Search the transit agency’s name, the station name and “parking.” Open a result on the agency’s official domain rather than relying on a general overview or an unrelated map listing.

Make sure the page names the correct lot and entrance. Stations can have more than one parking area, and nearby facilities may have different rules or connections.

Look for a station or lot page with both parking details and links to status or station alerts. If there is no live status page, do not assume the agency provides real-time capacity information.

Check the rules before you drive
Read the exact facility’s terms rather than assuming a rule from another station or transit system applies. Confirm:

Operating hours and any overnight or maximum-stay limit.

Fees, payment methods, and whether payment is daily, reserved, or permit-based.

Permit requirements, transit-use eligibility, vehicle-registration conditions, and any other restrictions.

Where parking is permitted, including marked-space requirements, accessible spaces, and location-specific restrictions.

Whether the facility has special conditions, such as construction or an event-day change.

Examples of why local terms matter
LA Metro says parking availability, pricing, hours and EV charging vary by location. Its parking page describes daily payment at an onsite kiosk, in the Metro Parking app or online; the app and online process use a lot-zone number posted at the lot. The page also says a vehicle may remain in a Metro lot for up to 72 consecutive hours while the rider is using transit; a longer stay requires prior extended-parking authorization. These are LA Metro terms, not a general rule for other agencies. Check LA Metro’s parking information before relying on them.

Its page lists location-specific spaces and restrictions, so check the relevant station listing rather than treating the 24-hour limit as a rule for other systems. MTS parking information also notes that Spring Street transit-center parking is unavailable during a construction period through mid-2028, with limited disabled parking identified. Construction notices are time-sensitive; verify the current page and signs.
Read lot availability as a dated report
If the agency publishes a lot-status page, read the status together with its update timestamp and stated update cadence. “Open” means the agency reported the lot open at that time; it does not reserve a space or guarantee that capacity has not changed since the update.
MARTA’s status key uses “Green – Lot Open” and “Red – Lot Full.” MARTA says onsite staff monitor availability, real-time information is provided from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., and updates are periodic through the day. Its page says it is updated Monday through Friday and displays an update timestamp. Treat the status as a report with that schedule, not as a continuously refreshed count. Check MARTA parking availability for the current status and timestamp.
Check station access alerts as well as parking
A parking space does not help if the entrance or connection you need is closed. On the same agency site, check for elevator and escalator outages, station closures, construction, planned service changes, and entrance or pedestrian-access restrictions.

Compare lots and choose a fallback
If more than one lot could work, compare the details that affect your actual trip:

Distance and the real walking or transit connection to the station.

Reported status and the time of the latest update.

Fee, payment method, hours and maximum stay.

Permit, transit-use, or other eligibility requirements.

Accessible parking, construction impacts and the route to the platform or entrance.

Whether the agency identifies another lot or a transit connection as a fallback.
Check the alternative’s own restrictions and connection before relying on it. Sound Transit, for example, identifies alternate park-and-rides, bus connections and other nearby access choices for some situations, and warns that lots may be unavailable on high-traffic or event days. Those options are local examples, not a guarantee that every station has an alternate lot. See Sound Transit parking information.

Make a final check close to departure

Reopen the agency’s lot-status page and note its displayed update time and stated cadence.

Review station alerts for access changes that could affect your entrance, elevator, or connection.

If the lot is full, closed or uncertain, follow an agency-published alternate-parking route and verify the alternative’s terms.

Follow posted signs and the agency’s current instructions on arrival. Do not treat a third-party map as authoritative for current lot status unless the agency identifies it as an official status source.

The page says “open,” but the lot is full on arrival: Check the timestamp and update schedule. Status can change after a report; use the agency’s fallback guidance and posted signs.

You find a parking overview but not your station’s rules: Search the official site for the exact station or lot name. The overview may not include local hours, fees, restrictions or construction notices.

You cannot tell whether overnight parking is allowed: Look for an explicit maximum-stay or overnight rule on the facility page. If it is unclear, use the agency’s official contact channel rather than inferring permission from another lot.

You cannot pay using the method you expected: Check the lot’s posted instructions and agency page for the accepted payment method, any required zone number, and whether permits or transit use affect eligibility.

Parking is available but station access is disrupted: Check alerts for the entrance, elevator, escalator, construction or service connection you need, then use an agency-listed alternative if available.
What transit parking information can—and cannot—tell you
Parking and station access are part of the wider trip to and from transit. APTA’s 2015 Transit Parking 101 discusses station users and access modes in that planning context; it is dated industry guidance, not a current rule for an individual station. Read APTA’s Transit Parking 101.
There is no single system-wide answer to whether station parking is free, open, available overnight or updated continuously. Agency pages and signs govern local terms, and the examples above are specific to the named agencies and stations. Confirm the exact lot and check again near departure.
