To type Punjabi by spelling words with English letters, first check whether Punjabi appears in Google Input Tools’ live language selector: Google’s setup guides explain how to add and enable a tool, but the reviewed pages do not confirm that Punjabi is currently available. If it is not listed, Windows offers a documented Punjabi Phonetic keyboard that converts English-key input into Gurmukhi suggestions.

How to install and enable Google Input Tools in Chrome

Open Google’s Chrome extension setup page and use its link to install Google Input Tools from the Chrome Web Store.

In Chrome, click the Google Input Tools extension icon and choose Extension options.

In the options page, find the input tool you want, add it to the selected tools, and save or apply the selection if prompted.

Click the extension icon again and select the tool you added to turn it on.

Click inside a web-page text box and type. If input does not work on a page, refresh that page and try again.

Check for Punjabi before relying on this method
Look in the live list of available input tools for Punjabi. Google’s setup documentation describes adding a tool, while its current Chrome Web Store listing describes broad language and script coverage without naming Punjabi. Do not assume that a coverage total means Punjabi is included; if Punjabi is absent from the selector, this extension cannot be confirmed as a Punjabi option.
The extension is intended for web-page text boxes. Its listing says it does not work in the Chrome address bar, the Chrome Web Store, other Chrome extensions, or Flash applications. Google’s listing identifies version 102 and an update date of September 15, 2026; its user and rating counts are dynamic listing figures, not measures of Punjabi support.
How to set up Punjabi phonetic typing in Windows
Microsoft documents a system-level Punjabi Phonetic keyboard for Windows. The article was last updated June 20, 2024. Its instructions distinguish phonetic typing from a fixed keyboard layout such as Punjabi INSCRIPT.

Select Add a language, search for Punjabi (Gurmukhi), select it, and choose Install.

Open the Punjabi language’s options, choose Add a keyboard, and select Punjabi Phonetic.

Switch to the Punjabi keyboard with Windows logo key + Spacebar.

In the app where you want to write, type a word using English letters. Review the Gurmukhi suggestions, then press Enter or use the cursor keys to select the intended one.

Microsoft’s example is baaga, which brings up ਬਾਗ, meaning “garden.” The input follows pronunciation: it transliterates the sound into Gurmukhi rather than translating the word’s meaning. Google likewise distinguishes transliteration from translation in its Input Tools feature documentation.

What phonetic typing does—and does not do
Phonetic typing lets you enter a word in Latin letters and choose a corresponding form in another writing system. Because the conversion follows sound rather than meaning, it is not a way to translate an English sentence into Punjabi. Suggestions may require a choice when multiple Gurmukhi words could match the letters you typed.
If Punjabi typing does not work

Punjabi is missing from Google’s selector: The documented Chrome setup cannot establish Punjabi support. Use the Windows Punjabi Phonetic keyboard if you are on Windows.

The extension is selected but a web page shows Latin letters: Confirm the desired tool is enabled in the extension menu; refresh the page and test inside a web-page text box.

You are typing in Chrome’s address bar or an excluded area: Move to a supported web-page text box. The extension listing excludes the address bar, Chrome Web Store, other extensions, and Flash applications.

Windows produces unexpected results: Confirm that Punjabi (Gurmukhi) and Punjabi Phonetic—not only Punjabi INSCRIPT—are installed, then switch to the intended keyboard with Windows logo key + Spacebar.
