If your web application firewall (WAF) blocks a real customer, find the matching security event and identify the rule before changing anything. Then make the smallest rule or inspection adjustment that restores the legitimate request, and test it while keeping the relevant traffic visible in logs. A block is not automatically a false positive: first confirm that the request is expected and the matched rule explains the failure.
Why might a WAF block a legitimate customer?
A WAF false positive occurs when a legitimate request is detected and mitigated as malicious. The cause may be a managed rule matching a particular part of the request, a custom inspection rule, or a traffic pattern the WAF does not recognize as expected. A customer report alone does not establish which explanation applies; the event record and request context do.

Some legitimate patterns worth checking include mobile apps with non-browser user agents, uptime monitors or integration tests, verified bots routed through a proxy or load balancer, and traffic from less common devices. Rich-text submissions and accepted image or custom file formats, including SVG, can also resemble attack input to some rules. These are investigation leads, not proof of what triggered a particular block. AWS documents examples for Bot Control traffic and XSS-related content.

How do you find the request and rule responsible?
1. Record enough detail to locate the event
Ask the affected customer or your support team for the approximate time, affected URL or endpoint, client type (such as browser, mobile app, or integration), and what happened: a block response, challenge, or other failure. Capture a request ID or correlation ID if available. Avoid collecting passwords, tokens, or personal data that is not needed to investigate.

2. Match the report to a WAF event or log
Search your provider’s security events or WAF logs around the reported time, using the request ID where supported. In Cloudflare, filter Security Events to investigate what caused a legitimate request to be blocked; its managed-rules troubleshooting guide also describes payload logging for additional match detail on eligible Enterprise plans. AWS WAF logging records can include when AWS WAF received a request, request details, and matched-rule information. See AWS WAF logging documentation for logging content and destinations.
3. Confirm the action, rule, and match context
In the event or log, identify whether the WAF terminated the request and which rule or rule group matched. Check the available match details to see which request component was involved. Depending on the provider, plan, and logging configuration, you may have more or less payload detail. Do not infer the cause from a generic block page if the event record can identify the rule.

How should you choose a fix?
Choose an adjustment based on the rule and request pattern you confirmed. AWS describes approaches such as monitoring matches, tuning inspection, scope-down statements, logical combinations, and label-based handling; the available controls depend on your web ACL and rule configuration. Cloudflare recommends adjusting the specific problematic rule rather than turning off an entire ruleset. Its current troubleshooting guidance outlines rule adjustments and exceptions.

| Approach | Scope and visibility | Protection and operational fit |
|---|---|---|
| Adjust inspection criteria | Can target the inspected request content or condition; review resulting matches in events or logs. | Useful when the match is understood and the rule supports narrower inspection. Preserve inspection of other relevant content. |
| Apply a scoped exception or rule action override | Can limit the change to a specific rule and request scope; the exact scope and logging behavior vary by provider. | Useful when one known rule blocks an expected request class. Avoid broad exclusions that cover unrelated traffic. |
| Test in count or monitor mode | Where supported, records matches without applying the blocking action, so you can observe representative traffic. | Useful before changing enforcement, but it temporarily means that rule does not block matching requests. |
| Disable a broader ruleset or allow an entire endpoint | Affects more rules or requests than a narrow exception and can make matching traffic harder to distinguish. | Usually a wider security trade-off than the incident requires; avoid it when a targeted correction is available. |
AWS notes that changing application code that generates attack-like requests can be the best approach, although it may take time: “The best approach is to change the application code that is generating requests that look similar to attacks, but that may take some time and effort.” If the application behavior is intentional and cannot reasonably be changed, a WAF exception may be necessary; AWS cautions that a quick exception can expose the application to potential attacks. See AWS guidance on testing and tuning.

How do you verify the correction safely?
- Test the affected path. Replay or exercise the representative legitimate request where practical, using the same route and relevant client or content type.
- Confirm the customer-visible result. Verify that the expected application response succeeds, not merely that the WAF no longer blocks the request.
- Review new WAF events. Check whether the original rule still matches, whether another rule now terminates the request, and whether the adjustment affects unexpected traffic.
- Keep compensating controls in view. For intentionally accepted high-risk content or endpoints, retain appropriate inspection or other protections. Treat an exception as a security change and review it when traffic or application behavior changes.
AWS recommends monitoring rule matches and tuning false positives through targeted methods in its web ACL testing and tuning guidance. Provider behavior and console labels can change, so check the current controls for the WAF version you operate.
