Start with the character who will do most of your on-field damage, then choose teammates around your roster and activity—not a fixed attacker/tank/support formula.
What “balanced” means in PGR
Balance is useful combat coverage, not a rule that every squad must contain exactly one character from each class. The character reference separates Attacker, Tank, Support, and Amplifier classes, while a community combat guide describes tanks as helping weaken enemies and cut through shields, and support characters as providing healing or buffs. Those are starting points; a character’s specific kit and the fight’s demands still matter. Character class reference · Community combat guide

- Damage: Identify the character most likely to deal the squad’s main damage.
- Enemy weakening: Consider a teammate who reduces defenses or helps with shields when relevant.
- Survival and amplification: Healing and buffs can keep a run going or improve damage, but their value depends on the activity.
The community combat guide says elemental damage ignores shields while physical damage is reduced by them, and associates tanks with shield shredding. Treat that as a broad combat distinction rather than a complete explanation of every enemy mechanic; check the target’s behavior and your characters’ kits. Combat Guide

- Pick the likely on-field carry. Choose the character who will spend the most time fighting and contribute most of the damage in the activity.
- Fill the most important gap. Add a teammate whose kit supplies enemy weakening, shield help, healing, buffs, or another need the carry does not cover.
- Use the remaining slot for the actual content. It may add damage, sustain, or another useful effect; do not select a class just to complete a generic trio.
- Invest selectively while progressing. A 2024 team-building guide recommends concentrating early story resources on the main character rather than upgrading the whole roster evenly. The enduring point is to prioritize the character doing most of the work on field, not to copy that guide’s old character recommendations. Games Learning Society’s 2024 guide
- Reassess when the activity changes. A squad that clears story stages comfortably may not be the right one for a score-focused mode.
Adjust the lineup to the activity
Story progression
For story stages, build around one primary damage dealer and use the other slots to provide the support and enemy-weakening functions your available characters can offer. The 2024 guide’s specific examples—including Bianca, Liv, and Nanami—reflect an older game state, so use its investment principle rather than treating those names as current recommendations. - A Ribose import
- From the Punishing: Gray Raven video game

Phantom Pain Cage and War Zone
These score-oriented activities should be considered separately from story progression and from each other. A community combat guide discusses them as distinct optimization contexts; the older guide’s example lineups for physical, lightning, fire, and ice teams are historical, not verified current meta. Decide which character and damage type best serve the particular activity, then fit supporting functions around that plan. Community Combat Guide · 2024 team-building guide

A July 9, 2026 LDShop guide lists example teams for Physical, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Dark, and Nihil, including budget suggestions and descriptions of damage, resistance-reduction, tank, and support contributions. Use it as a dated reference for possible compositions, not proof that those teams are optimal now: its patch-level validity for Global on October 4, 2026 has not been established. Before spending scarce resources or pulling for a character, compare any named recommendation with a guide that matches your server and current patch. Global and CN availability can differ, so a roster list or recommendation from one server may not transfer directly to the other. LDShop’s July 2026 team guide · Character reference

A quick decision checklist
- Which character will deal most of the damage and spend most time on field?
- Does this fight make defense reduction or shield help especially useful?
- Would healing or buffs improve this run, or would another damage contribution be more valuable?
- Is the team suited to story progression, Phantom Pain Cage, or War Zone?
- Does a character-specific recommendation match your server, patch, available roster, and investment level?
