Punishing: Gray Raven (PGR) is a free-to-play action RPG built around real-time squad combat, switching characters mid-fight and using its 3-Ping skill system. New players should learn those combat basics, choose their server carefully, and check the live banner rules before spending Black Cards: server data does not transfer, and recruitment rules can change.
How PGR combat works
PGR is an action game, not a turn-based RPG. You control a squad in real time, switch among its members and respond to combat with skills, dodges and signature moves. KURO GAMES describes the combat as letting players “Utilize an intuitive 3-Ping skill system to parry, dodge, and unleash devastating Signature Moves.” The official Steam description presents switching squad members and combining attacks through the 3-Ping system as core mechanics.
Read the pings, then act
Watch the skill pings available to your character and use them in ways that match that character’s abilities. The key beginner habit is to treat pings as part of active combat: position and dodge as threats arrive, use skills, and switch squad members when appropriate. The official description establishes the system’s role but does not provide a universal optimal rotation or damage formula; learn each character’s mechanics through play rather than assuming one sequence works for everyone.

Choose your server before committing
A May 2026 beginner guide from LUDO.guide says Global offers North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. It also says the server choice affects which players you can add as friends and play co-op with, and that game data does not carry over between servers. Choose the region where your friends play, and double-check the selection before you begin investing time in an account.
The same guide reports a two-second co-op delay on every server. Treat that as the guide’s observation, not a guarantee of the latency you will experience: connection conditions and individual experiences can differ.

Understand the currencies before pulling
Black Cards are flexible premium currency used for banner-related choices. The May 2026 LUDO.guide beginner guide advises free-to-play and low-spending players to save Black Cards for new S-Rank Construct debut banners rather than convert them into basic recruitment tickets. That is a resource-planning recommendation from the guide, not a promise that every future debut banner will be equally valuable.
Match tickets to the banner
The guide distinguishes the main ticket types this way:

Its advice is not to spend Black Cards converting them into the basic tickets. Before using any currency, check the live banner interface to confirm what that banner accepts and which character or weapon it targets.

Construct and weapon banners are separate, with separate pity counters. The May 2026 LUDO.guide says A-Rank and S-Rank pity counters are separate, as are the 5-star and 6-star weapon counters; an early pull of a given rarity resets that counter. It reports the following values for the banner rules it reviewed:
| Banner or counter | Guide-reported rule | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Member Recruit, first S-Rank | 40 pulls to pity | Confirm the current banner’s rules and whether they apply to your account. |
| Member Recruit, later S-Rank | 60 pulls to pity | Check the live details, including counter resets. |
| Target Weapon Research, 6-star | 30 pulls to pity; 80% chance of the selected rate-up weapon | Confirm the selected target, odds and current pity rules before spending. |
These are values reported by that community guide, originally published in May 2026 and marked updated two months before October 4, 2026—not a guarantee for every account or future banner. Read the current banner details in-game before committing currency. In particular, do not assume character pity carries over to a weapon banner, or that an early rarity pull leaves the same counter intact.
Plan around the guarantee, not just the target
Before pulling, identify the banner’s currency, target, pity counter and reset behavior, then check whether your available currency can reach its stated guarantee. If it cannot, spending may leave you short without the outcome you wanted. A saved balance preserves flexibility for a later banner; the right choice depends on your account and priorities, not simply on a character’s rank.

Roster and event recommendations age quickly. The App Store version history lists version 4.8 on September 23, 2026, with a new character, weapon, CUB, memory set, story and events. Its notes describe “Against the Flow of Time” as an activity for learning character mechanics and clearing combat challenges. Treat those details as a version-specific snapshot, not a permanent account plan. For current characters, events and banner availability, check the game’s notices and live banner screens; KURO GAMES’ official PGR site also provides game news and information.
