pst.dll Errors: Identify the Motorola Program Before Repairing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

pst.dll is a Motorola application file, not a Windows system DLL. When pst.dll is missing, Windows is usually trying to start older Motorola software such as Phone Tools, Motorola Device Manager, MotoHelper, MotoCast, or Motorola Diagnostics.

The safest repair is to identify the Motorola program that launches immediately before the error, then repair or reinstall that complete application. Downloading a loose copy of pst.dll and placing it in System32 is not a dependable fix and can introduce a mismatched or malicious file.

What pst.dll is

Property Reported information
Filename pst.dll
Internal description PST_CORE DLL
Product PST_CORE Dynamic Link Library
Publisher Motorola, Inc.
File type Third-party application DLL
Normal location Beside the Motorola executable that uses it
Windows component No evidence supports this
Outlook data file Not related to an Outlook .pst file

Public file inventories associate pst.dll with several older Motorola software products. Those associations are useful clues, but the filename alone cannot prove which product owns the copy on your computer.

  • “The file pst.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “Error loading pst.dll.”
  • “Failed to load pst.dll.”
  • “The specified module could not be found.”

These are commonly reported variants, not a single official Microsoft error catalogue. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that pst.dll exists but a dependency required by it is missing.

Find the Motorola program that needs the file

Do this before downloading, copying, or registering anything. The exact parent application determines the correct repair package.

Check the error window

Look at the title bar and text of the error. It may identify the application or executable that failed. If the message appears when you open a Motorola phone utility, that program is the first suspect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also note what you did immediately before the problem began:

  • Uninstalled Motorola software
  • Removed a phone driver
  • Allowed antivirus software to quarantine a file
  • Ran disk cleanup
  • Installed a Windows update
  • Interrupted a Motorola software update
  • Restored or moved an old application folder

That timing often identifies the cause.

Inspect the shortcut

  1. Right-click the shortcut that triggers the error.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the Target field.
  5. Note the executable name and installation folder.

The target may point to an old Motorola utility, a helper process, or a phone-management program. The DLL normally belongs in that product’s installation directory, not in a Windows system folder.

Check Task Manager

If the error appears during startup:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for Motorola, MotoCast, MotoHelper, Phone Tools, or an unfamiliar entry associated with an old phone utility.
  4. Right-click the entry and choose Open file location, if available.
  5. Record the executable path.

Do not delete the entry yet. First confirm whether the associated software is still installed and needed.

Check installed applications

In Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for Motorola, MotoCast, MotoHelper, Phone Tools, or Device Manager.

In Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Search for the same product names.

You can also open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Older desktop software often appears there even when it does not provide a modern Settings entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you find a likely parent program, repair that program rather than replacing pst.dll separately.

Fix 1: Repair the Motorola application

Repair is the least disruptive option because it can restore missing program files without requiring a full reinstall.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the Motorola application identified earlier.
  3. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  4. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Wait for Windows to finish.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Launch the Motorola program again.

On some Windows 10 installations:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Select the Motorola program.
  3. Choose Advanced options.
  4. Select Repair.

Traditional desktop programs may not expose a Repair button. If you see Change, Modify, or Repair in Control Panel, select it and follow the installer’s maintenance wizard.

How to tell whether repair worked

Repair succeeded if the Motorola program opens without the pst.dll message and performs the function you need. For phone software, connect the device only after the application opens normally, then check whether the program detects it.

  • Fluid 120Hz Display: Features a large 6.7-inch HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for smooth scrolling and added durability.

If the same error returns, or repair is unavailable, continue with a complete reinstall.

Fix 2: Reinstall the complete Motorola package

A complete reinstall is the most likely solution when the installation is incomplete, damaged, or missing several related files.

Before removing the program, make sure you have the original installer, recovery media, or a legitimate vendor-supported installation package. Do not rely on a loose DLL file.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select the Motorola program.
  3. Choose the three-dot menu.
  4. Select Uninstall.
  5. Follow the uninstall wizard.
  6. Restart Windows even if the wizard does not request it.
  7. Install the complete Motorola package again.
  8. Restart Windows once more.
  9. Open the program from its Start menu shortcut.

For Windows 10, use Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Uninstall, or open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the installer offers Repair, Modify, or Complete installation, choose the option that installs the full application and its drivers or services. Do not copy only pst.dll from another computer. Files from different Motorola products can have different dependencies, architecture, or internal versions.

If the old installer will not run

Right-click the installer and select Properties. On the Compatibility tab, try a compatibility mode for an older Windows release, then select Run this program as an administrator and run the installer again.

Compatibility mode can help an old installer start, but it does not guarantee that the finished Motorola software will work correctly on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Older phone utilities may depend on discontinued drivers, services, or behavior that current Windows versions no longer provide.

If the software is no longer needed and the error appears only during startup, uninstall the orphaned Motorola program instead of restoring its DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a legitimate application file. It can also detect a tampered or unofficial file. Do not blindly restore anything named pst.dll.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Expand any entry that mentions pst.dll or the Motorola installation folder.
  6. Check the original path, detection details, and parent application.
  7. Restore the file only if you have verified the installer and the file’s provenance.

Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item makes it available again and may allow the detection to recur. If Windows Security repeatedly quarantines the file, stop restoring it. Reinstall the Motorola application from a trusted original package and investigate the file’s digital signature and location.

A file named pst.dll in an unexpected temporary folder, a user download folder, or an unrelated application directory deserves additional scrutiny. The filename alone is not a malware verdict, but it is also not proof that every copy is safe.

  • Long-lasting battery + TurboPower charging. Power through day after day with a 5200mAh battery, then get hours of power in just minutes.****

Fix 4: Check the installation path and architecture

At least one public metadata record identifies an x86 build of pst.dll, which is consistent with older 32-bit Motorola software. Public inventories disagree about exact versions, sizes, and architecture, so do not use repository metadata to select a replacement file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check the application architecture:

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Details.
  3. Right-click a column heading.
  4. Choose Select columns.
  5. Enable Platform, if that column is available.
  6. Look for the Motorola executable while it is running.

On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process may be marked with a suffix such as *32. You can also inspect the program’s installation folder and installer documentation.

The important rule is simple: a 32-bit Motorola application needs the compatible files supplied by its own package. Do not install both x86 and x64 copies “just in case,” and do not mix files from different Motorola products.

If pst.dll is present beside the executable but Windows still reports that the module cannot be found, a secondary dependency may be missing. Reinstall the complete application first. If that fails, inspect the application’s installer log or Windows Event Viewer rather than replacing random DLLs.

Fix 5: Check for a missing Microsoft runtime only after reinstalling

Do not automatically install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because pst.dll is mentioned. pst.dll is identified as a Motorola application DLL, not as a Microsoft runtime component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the repaired application displays a separate error naming a Microsoft runtime, use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads and select the architecture required by the application. An old 32-bit program commonly needs the x86 package, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

Install only the runtime named by the new error. Then restart Windows and test the Motorola program again.

Fix 6: Update Windows and restart

A pending Windows update can cause compatibility or installer problems, although Windows Update is not a source for pst.dll.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Retry the Motorola application or its installer.

On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then select Check for updates.

If the Motorola program is very old, an update may not make it fully compatible. Treat Windows Update as supporting maintenance, not as a direct replacement for the missing Motorola file.

Fix 7: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC

DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party Motorola DLL. Use them when you also have Windows instability, damaged system components, failed updates, or multiple unrelated system-file errors.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, test Windows and the Motorola application again. If both commands complete without fixing pst.dll, that result is expected for a missing application-owned file. Return to the Motorola installer rather than repeating the scans indefinitely.

Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM/SFC without knowing what changed can take time without addressing the parent application. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it found; repairs are performed by the full version. Reinstalling the Motorola program remains the definitive fix when pst.dll belongs to that application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Check drivers in Device Manager

Drivers are relevant when the error began after connecting a Motorola phone, removing a device package, or updating hardware software. A driver update will not normally recreate pst.dll, but it may resolve a separate device or service failure that prevents the Motorola application from working.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories such as Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, Modems, or Other devices.
  4. Look for a yellow warning icon or an unknown device.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Update driver.
  7. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows if prompted.

If the problem began immediately after a driver update:

  1. Right-click the device in Device Manager.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Driver tab.
  4. Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
  5. Restart Windows.

Do not install a random driver because its name appears similar to the Motorola product. Verify the device model and obtain drivers from a legitimate manufacturer-supported package.

Checking dozens of drivers manually can mean guessing which version is stale and repeating the process after every update. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver problems; driver installation is handled by the full version. This is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Motorola application that owns pst.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 9: Check optional Windows features only when the error names one

Do not enable random Windows Features to repair pst.dll. The file is not identified as a Windows component.

If a separate installer message specifically requests a Windows feature:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Features.
  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Enable only the feature named by the installer.
  5. Select OK.
  6. Restart Windows if requested.
  7. Run the Motorola installer again.

If no feature is named, leave this step alone. Enabling unrelated legacy components can add unnecessary compatibility and security concerns without restoring the Motorola DLL.

Fix 10: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore can help when the problem began after an update, software removal, or driver change and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected restore point. Afterward, test the Motorola software and reinstall it if necessary.

What not to do

Do not download a random pst.dll

DLL download repositories may provide the wrong version, wrong architecture, incomplete dependencies, or a modified file. Even a clean copy may not fix a damaged Motorola installation.

There is no verified current Motorola download page specifically offering pst.dll, and Microsoft does not distribute it as a Windows component. Use the original installer, recovery media, or an authentic vendor-supported package instead.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64

A private application DLL normally belongs beside the executable that loads it. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create version conflicts, architecture mismatches, DLL search-order problems, and security risks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not run regsvr32 by default

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that support COM self-registration through functions such as DllRegisterServer. A normal private application library does not necessarily implement those functions.

If you run:

regsvr32 pst.dll

and receive “DllRegisterServer was not found,” that does not mean you need another copy. It usually means the file is not a self-registering COM DLL. Reinstall the parent application instead.

Do not mix Motorola files

Do not copy pst.dll from another Motorola product, another computer, or an unrelated installer. Similar filenames do not prove compatibility.

Do not ignore an orphaned startup entry

If Motorola software has already been removed and the error appears only during boot, inspect Task Manager > Startup apps, Task Scheduler, and the executable path. After confirming that the program is no longer needed, disable or remove the orphaned startup entry. Restoring a DLL for software you no longer use is unnecessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is pst.dll an Outlook PST file?

No. An Outlook .pst file is a mailbox data file. pst.dll is a Windows DLL associated with older Motorola software. The two names are unrelated.

Is `pst.dll part of Windows?

No evidence supports that. It is identified as the Motorola PST_CORE Dynamic Link Library, not as a Windows inbox component, Microsoft runtime, DirectX file, or .NET file.

Which Motorola program uses pst.dll?

Public inventories associate it with Motorola Phone Tools, Motorola Device Manager or MotoHelper, MotoCast, and Motorola Diagnostics. The exact product must be confirmed from the error window, executable path, installed-app list, or installation directory.

Should I download pst.dll from the internet?

No. Random DLL sources can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or a mismatched build. Repair or reinstall the complete Motorola application from its original or legitimate vendor-supported installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say the module is missing when pst.dll is visible?

The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is absent, blocked, or incompatible. Reinstall the complete Motorola package and inspect Event Viewer or installer logs if the error continues.

Should I install the 32-bit or 64-bit version?

Use the architecture required by the Motorola application. At least one public metadata record identifies an x86 build, and older Motorola utilities are often 32-bit. The application’s own installer is safer than selecting a DLL architecture manually.

Will SFC restore pst.dll?

Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while pst.dll belongs to a third-party Motorola application. Run DISM and SFC only when broader Windows corruption is also present.

What if the error appears after every restart?

Find the startup executable and its path. If it belongs to Motorola software you still need, reinstall that product. If the software was removed and is no longer needed, disable the orphaned startup entry after confirming what it launches.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if reinstalling Motorola software still fails?

Check Windows Security quarantine, confirm the installer architecture, review Event Viewer, try compatibility mode for the installer, and consider System Restore. Old Motorola software may also depend on obsolete drivers or services that current Windows versions no longer support.
