The file is associated with the Essential Reality Virtual Glove P5 and is described as “Interface to P5Device.”
The safest fix is to identify the old game, P5 driver package, GlovePIE installation, or other program requesting p5dll.dll, then repair or reinstall that complete package. Do not start by downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into System32.

What p5dll.dll belongs to
The P5 glove was an early USB virtual-reality controller made by Essential Reality. Historical P5 software, P5-enabled games, and compatibility programs could load p5dll.dll to communicate with the device.
Historical file databases attribute the file to Virtual Glove P5 and VRYAD Development Group. That publisher attribution is not supported by a currently verifiable official VRYAD download page, so treat the filename alone as insufficient proof that a file is genuine.

p5dll.dll is not:
- A Windows system DLL
- A standard DirectX component
- A Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable file
- A normal .NET component
- A standard hardware-driver file supplied by Windows
Public listings disagree about the file’s version, size, and architecture. Do not use those conflicting records to choose a replacement file.
Fix 1: Identify the program showing the error
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
The error belongs to the program that is trying to load the DLL. Finding that program is more useful than searching Windows folders.
Start with the exact wording of the message. Look for:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The program name in the error window title
- A game launcher or shortcut that was opened immediately beforehand
- A P5 glove utility, emulator, or input-mapping program
- A startup item that launches when Windows signs in
Check the shortcut target
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and the folder containing it.
- Select Cancel without changing the shortcut.
If the target points to an old game or P5-related utility, that is the package that should supply p5dll.dll.
Check installed programs
On Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the game, Virtual Glove P5 software, GlovePIE, or another old controller utility.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Search the installed-program list.
Also consider what changed immediately before the error appeared:
- A game or utility was uninstalled
- The program was moved to another drive
- An old disk image was restored
- Antivirus software quarantined a file
- The program was reinstalled incompletely
- The application was copied from another computer instead of installed
If you cannot identify the parent application, do not replace p5dll.dll yet. A filename by itself does not identify the correct build.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the original P5 application
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
This is the most likely solution.
Use the original installer, installation media, or a trusted preservation copy of the exact application. There is no verified current Microsoft or VRYAD redistributable download for p5dll.dll.

- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the game or P5-related application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the program on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
Older desktop applications may not offer a Repair button. In that case, open the program’s original installer and look for Repair, Modify, or Reinstall.
Reinstall it from its original package
- Back up saved games, profiles, or custom controller scripts.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer.
- Install the program into its normal folder.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch the application from its new shortcut.
If the installer asks for a P5 driver or device component, install the complete package rather than extracting only a DLL.
A successful repair normally means the program starts without the p5dll.dll message. If a new message names another DLL, the parent installation may still be incomplete or one of its dependencies may be missing.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Security software may have removed or quarantined an old DLL, especially if the file has no modern signature or comes from legacy software.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the program stopped working.
- Open a relevant detection to see its path and action.
Only restore a file if all of these conditions are true:
- It was located inside the known installation folder
- The associated P5 application is trusted
- The installer or media came from a reliable source
- The detection clearly refers to the application file rather than an unexpected copy
If you restore a quarantined file, reinstall the complete application afterward if possible. Do not whitelist every copy of p5dll.dll by filename. A malicious file can use the same name.
If Defender identifies the file as malware, leave it quarantined and obtain a clean copy of the parent application. Microsoft warns that allowing a file removes future protection for it, so do not bypass the detection merely because the name is familiar.
Fix 4: Look in the application folder
Time needed: 5 minutes
A program normally expects its private DLLs beside its executable or in one of its own subfolders.

- If it is absent, run the application installer’s repair option.
If the application was moved manually, restore it to its original installation structure or reinstall it. Copying a random DLL into the folder may produce a different error if the file has the wrong architecture or missing dependencies.
Microsoft documents the Windows DLL search order and the security risks of placing untrusted DLLs in searched folders. Application files should normally be installed by the application rather than copied from an unrelated computer.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Most historical P5 software was designed for older 32-bit Windows environments. The exact architecture of every p5dll.dll build is not verified, and public listings conflict on this point.
A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit DLL. A 64-bit replacement will not solve that problem. The reverse is also true.
Check whether the application is 32-bit
- Start the affected application if possible.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform if available.
- Check the application entry.
On some Windows versions, 32-bit processes appear with a suffix such as *32. You can also inspect the application’s documentation or installer.
Do not use the presence of C:Program Files (x86) as absolute proof. It is a useful indication, but the original package remains the authority.
If you have a known-good copy from the original installer, keep it with the matching application. Do not combine a DLL from one P5 package with a different game or utility.
Fix 6: Check for a missing dependency
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that p5dll.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load one of its dependencies.
This can happen when:
- The P5 software was copied instead of installed
- A supporting runtime was removed
- The application was moved to another folder
- A driver or device component is missing
- A 32-bit program is being given incompatible supporting files
Reinstall the complete parent package first. Do not assume that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is responsible without evidence from the application’s installer or documentation.
If the installer identifies a required runtime, obtain that runtime from Microsoft and install the architecture requested by the application. Avoid installing several unrelated runtime packages simply because a DLL error appeared.
Fix 7: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
Windows Update will not normally recreate p5dll.dll, but current updates can resolve compatibility and system-integrity problems around an old application.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
If the P5 application still fails, continue with the application repair steps. Windows Update is not a source for the historical P5 DLL.
Fix 8: Repair broader Windows corruption
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
Use this step when the DLL error appeared alongside crashes, damaged Windows features, failed updates, or other system problems. DISM and SFC will not normally recreate a third-party P5 DLL.
First install pending updates and restart. Then:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the P5 application.
Microsoft documents DISM as repairing the Windows component store and SFC as checking protected Windows system files. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the missing P5 file is probably an application-installation issue rather than Windows corruption.
Running these commands repeatedly will not generate a missing third-party DLL.
Manually hunting through Windows repair commands and trying to determine what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows reported problems, while repair is handled by the full version; reinstalling the original P5 application remains the definitive fix when that package owns the file.
Fix 9: Reinstall or update the related device driver
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
Use Device Manager when the program also reports that the P5 glove or USB device is missing. Device Manager will not supply p5dll.dll, but it can reveal a disconnected or failed device component.
- Connect the P5 hardware if you still have it.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Human Interface Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Other devices.
- Look for the P5 device, an unknown device, or a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant entry.
- Select Uninstall device if the original driver package is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original P5 driver installer.
- Reconnect the device when the installer requests it.
Do not use a generic driver update to replace the application’s DLL. The correct P5 package is more important than a newer-looking file.
Finding the correct driver manually can involve checking hardware IDs, old installers, and several similarly named entries. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing which drivers it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; for this file, reinstalling the original P5 software is still the definitive step.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 10: Try compatibility settings
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
An old P5 program may install successfully but fail on Windows 10 or Windows 11 because its installer, driver, or graphics code expects an older environment. Current compatibility with the original P5 hardware is not established.

Fix 11: Use System Restore if the file recently disappeared
Time needed: 20 to 40 minutes
System Restore can help when the program worked recently and a restore point predates the failure.
- Press Windows+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that may be changed.
- Select Next.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs. It normally does not change personal files, but review the affected-program list before continuing.
Recommended Free Tools
After the restore, repair or reinstall the parent P5 application if the DLL is still missing.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 is normally not appropriate for p5dll.dll.
The command registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not download a missing file, repair a damaged application, or install its dependencies. Running commands such as these can produce another error without addressing the cause:
regsvr32 p5dll.dll
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official installer or documentation specifically says that this particular DLL must be registered. A normal application library does not become usable merely because it was registered.

Downloading p5dll.dll from an unrelated DLL website is risky because:
- The file may contain malware
- The version may not match the application
- The architecture may be wrong
- The file may be damaged or modified
- The download may omit required dependencies
- It may hide the fact that the parent application was incompletely installed
- Copying it into a Windows folder can create DLL conflicts
There is no verified current official redistributable download for this historical file. Safe sources are the original P5 application installer, original game media, a trusted backup, or a reputable preservation project that provides the complete software package and explains its provenance.
Do not copy the file to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 unless the original installer explicitly requires it. Application DLLs normally belong in the application’s own directory.
Common causes of the error
| What happened | Most likely action |
|---|---|
| A P5 game was uninstalled or moved | Repair or reinstall that game |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Check Protection history, then reinstall from trusted media |
| The error began after copying the program | Reinstall instead of copying individual files |
| The file exists but will not load | Check architecture and dependencies |
| The P5 device is not detected | Reinstall the original driver package |
| The error appears with other Windows failures | Run DISM and SFC |
| The program worked only on an older computer | Use compatibility testing or a legacy environment |
| The file is in an unexpected folder | Do not whitelist it; scan and identify its parent program |
FAQ
Is p5dll.dll part of Windows?
No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is associated with Virtual Glove P5 software.
Is p5dll.dll a DirectX or Visual C++ file?
No. It is a P5 application library. A missing runtime could still prevent it from loading, but do not install runtimes without evidence from the parent application.
Should I copy p5dll.dll to System32?
Usually no. Restore it through the original application installer and keep it in the application’s directory.
Does regsvr32 p5dll.dll fix the problem?
Usually no. regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration functions, not for ordinary application libraries.
Is every p5dll.dll file safe?
No. The filename alone proves nothing. Check its location, provenance, security history, and connection to known P5 software.
