Both can reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render, but their platform reach and feature sets differ. There is no substantiated universal image-quality winner: a fair visual comparison has to use the same game, patch, settings and output conditions.
What’s the difference between PSSR and FSR?
PSSR stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Sony describes it as an AI library that analyzes game images as it upscales them. It is a PlayStation 5 Pro feature, and each game needs to support it.

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, or FSR, is not one fixed upscaler. It is a family of features. AMD’s current name for its machine-learning upscaler is FSR Upscaling, formerly called FSR 4. AMD’s current suite also includes Frame Generation, Ray Regeneration and Radiance Caching. Those functions do different jobs; frame generation, in particular, should not be mistaken for upscaling.

PSSR: supported PS5 Pro titles
Sony identifies PSSR as a PS5 Pro capability, not a separate accessory or a setting available on standard PS5. In February 2026, Sony said the original PSSR had been used in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles to that point. That is Sony’s count at the time of its announcement, not a live or independently audited total.

On March 16, 2026, Sony announced an upgraded PSSR and said it was rolling out broadly to supported titles. Sony also described an optional PS5 Pro system setting that can apply the enhancement to games that already support PSSR. Availability and results remain title-dependent. Sony advises that players can turn the feature off if it produces unexpected visual effects.
If you are choosing hardware specifically to use PSSR, the relevant platform is the PlayStation 5 Pro. Owning the console does not make every game PSSR-enabled.

FSR: compatible PC games and hardware
FSR support depends on the particular feature, GPU and game implementation. AMD’s current overview lists ML-based FSR Upscaling for Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series graphics cards, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027. That timing is AMD’s stated plan, not a guarantee. Earlier FSR generations have broader hardware support, but that does not mean every FSR feature works on every GPU.

What changed in PSSR and AMD’s FSR naming?
Sony’s 2026 PSSR upgrade
Sony announced a substantially revised neural network and algorithm in March 2026. It described the update as delivering “enhanced image stability, improved clarity in fine details, and more consistent performance across supported titles.” That is Sony’s account of the intended improvements, not a controlled comparison with FSR.
Remedy Entertainment graphics technical director Tatu Aalto said the upgraded PSSR improves upscaling quality and stability, discussing its use in Control and Alan Wake 2. That is a developer’s observation about those games, not evidence that PSSR outperforms FSR across titles.

AMD’s current FSR labels
AMD now groups its newer features under FSR “Redstone.” Its March 2026 developer article lists FSR Upscaling 4.1, Frame Generation 4.0.0, Ray Regeneration 1.1.0 and Radiance Caching 0.9 in preview. These version numbers describe the SDK components reported by AMD in that article; they are not a promise that every game ships with each feature or version.

AMD reports that FSR Upscaling can render 4K frames in approximately 1.3 ms on a Radeon RX 9070 XT in Performance mode. This is a vendor-reported figure for that GPU and mode, not a general estimate for other hardware and not a direct comparison with PSSR.

Which looks better: PSSR or FSR?
The available official descriptions do not establish that either technology looks better in every game. Sony’s and AMD’s claims explain their own intended benefits; they are not a neutral, matched PSSR-versus-FSR test. Image reconstruction can vary with a game’s implementation, rendering mode, source resolution, output resolution and motion.
For a meaningful side-by-side, compare the same game and build where both options are available, and record:
- the console or exact GPU and the game patch;
- the upscaler and version, plus the game’s quality mode;
- internal render resolution and display output resolution;
- whether frame generation is enabled, since it is a separate feature from upscaling;
- frame rate and latency, where measured; and
- fine detail in still images as well as image stability, ghosting or other artifacts during motion.
Without those details, a sharper-looking screenshot or a vendor performance figure cannot settle which implementation is preferable overall.

Does FSR work on PS5 Pro?
Do not treat AMD’s PC GPU compatibility list as evidence that FSR is available on PS5 Pro. The official material cited here identifies Sony’s PSSR for supported PS5 Pro games and describes AMD FSR support in terms of compatible hardware and game integration. It does not establish a general FSR option for PS5 Pro. For a particular console game, check that game’s own feature and graphics-mode information.
Quick Recap
How to choose between them
- You play on PS5 Pro: look for PSSR support in the specific game and try the supported mode or optional system enhancement. If you see unexpected artifacts, use Sony’s option to disable the enhancement.
- You play on PC: check the game’s menu, GPU requirements and exact FSR feature/version. Do not infer support for ML-based FSR Upscaling from support for an older FSR generation.
- You are judging image quality: compare actual implementations at matched settings, including motion behavior. Platform branding or an isolated performance number is not enough to declare a winner.
