Before buying a discounted laptop at Best Buy, identify whether it is clearance, open-box, refurbished, or pre-owned; read the exact condition notes; check what accessories and warranty are included; and confirm the return period and software support. Then compare its actual configuration and total value with what you need—not just the advertised discount.
1. Identify what kind of discounted laptop it is
Best Buy’s Outlet includes several product types, and the label affects what to expect from the item. Best Buy’s Outlet guide describes them as follows:

2. Read the condition details, not just the grade
For open-box laptops, Best Buy describes Excellent condition as appearing like new and including original parts and accessories or suitable replacements. Good may have minor to moderate cosmetic wear and may be missing original packaging or some accessories. Fair may show more noticeable cosmetic flaws and commonly have missing accessories. The grade is not a complete inspection report, so read the individual listing’s notes for screen blemishes, dents, scratches, missing parts, replacement components, or display-unit history.

If buying in a store, inspect the screen and casing in person. Where practical, try the keyboard, trackpad, ports, webcam, speakers, Wi-Fi, and charging. These are practical checks of physical condition and basic function; a listing grade alone does not establish that every feature has been tested.

3. Confirm the charger and other included items
Do not assume a discounted laptop comes with everything supplied with a new one. Check the listing’s included-items and condition details for the correct power adapter or charger, power cord, and any other accessory you need for that model. Best Buy advises buyers to check for missing items and verify accessories such as power cords and chargers. If the original accessory is absent, establish that any replacement is compatible before purchase.
4. Match the exact configuration to your workload
Compare the specific laptop’s processor, memory, storage, display, graphics, ports, and operating system with the work you plan to do. A low price or a model name alone cannot tell you whether it suits your needs: document work, creative applications, and gaming place different demands on a machine. Best Buy’s discounted-laptop listings provide specification filters, including RAM, processor, graphics, storage, and screen size, which can help narrow comparisons.

5. Check the seller, warranty, and protection terms
Confirm who is selling the laptop and what warranty applies to that particular listing. Refurbished and pre-owned warranty terms vary, and Best Buy’s general statement that most refurbished items have at least a 90-day warranty is not a substitute for the item’s stated coverage. Look for whether coverage is from the manufacturer or retailer, how long it lasts, and any exclusions. Best Buy says Geek Squad Protection is available for Outlet purchases, but availability and terms depend on the listing; review the plan separately rather than assuming it is included.
6. Verify the return window before checkout
Best Buy’s return policy effective February 23, 2026 lists 15 days for most products for standard members and 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and Total members. The policy period applies to new, clearance, open-box, refurbished, and pre-owned products sold by Best Buy. Marketplace purchases and policy exceptions may be treated differently, so check the current policy, seller, and checkout terms for the exact item before paying.

7. Check Windows support on older models
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to run, but Microsoft no longer provides regular security updates, fixes, or technical assistance. Eligible personal Windows 10 version 22H2 devices can enroll in Extended Security Updates through October 12, 2027; that is a limited bridge, not a replacement for checking Windows 11 compatibility. If a discounted laptop is older, confirm its installed operating system and whether it can run a supported version before treating the price as a bargain.

Compare the laptop’s price with a new unit of the same model and configuration, not merely with a reference price or a similar-looking model. Then account for condition, missing accessories, warranty coverage, and the return window. An open-box discount may be less compelling if it requires a charger purchase or gives you less coverage; a clearance laptop may be new but discontinued. Best Buy also recommends comparing an open-box price with the new version.
