PSSR is Sony’s machine-learning upscaler for supported PS5 Pro games; FSR is AMD’s upscaling family, and Sony identifies FSR 4 as one outcome of its Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD. There is no controlled, matched comparison in the cited official material that proves one is universally better. Which looks best depends on the game, its implementation and graphics mode.
What are PSSR and AMD FSR?
PSSR is Sony’s PS5 Pro upscaler
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is an AI-driven, machine-learning upscaling feature introduced with PS5 Pro. In a game that supports it, PSSR reconstructs an image for higher-resolution output; Sony describes supported games as capable of AI-enhanced 4K output on a 4K TV. That does not mean the game renders every frame natively at 4K. Sony’s PS5 Pro product page describes the feature and compatible output.

FSR is AMD’s upscaling family
AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is a family of upscaling technologies. The relevant comparison here is not simply two interchangeable console settings: PSSR is associated with PS5 Pro, while Sony describes FSR 4 as a PC-facing result of its collaboration with AMD. Support and implementation need to be checked for the specific game, platform and version.

Is PSSR the same as FSR 4?
No source cited here establishes that they are identical or interchangeable. Sony says the upgraded PSSR algorithm and neural network stem from Project Amethyst, its partnership with AMD, and connects that collaboration to FSR 4. That supports describing a shared development relationship, not calling PSSR “FSR 4 for PlayStation” as a literal implementation claim. Sony’s February 2026 announcement also says PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them; the evidence cited here does not provide a complete technical comparison of PSSR and each FSR version.

How does PSSR compare to FSR in image quality?
There is no universal winner established by the official sources cited here: they do not report a controlled, same-game, same-scene comparison of PSSR against FSR. Sony and individual developers do report improvements from upgraded PSSR in particular PS5 Pro games, including finer detail, image stability, reduced flicker and clearer motion. Those are title-specific claims, not independent benchmark findings or proof that PSSR outperforms FSR generally.

For example, IO Interactive technical director Henrik Schlichter described upgraded PSSR in 007 First Light as producing a “meaningful jump in image quality” with cleaner, more stable and sharper fine detail. That is the developer’s account of that game. The May 19, 2026 PlayStation Blog article gives the game-specific context.

When comparing a game yourself, use the same platform, patch, graphics mode and scene where possible. Look beyond a paused image: moving foliage, thin geometry, hair and particles can reveal shimmer, flicker, ghosting or instability that a still frame may hide. Keep internal rendering resolution, reconstructed output resolution, frame rate and image stability separate; a 4K output label alone does not tell you the game’s native rendering resolution.

Does PS5 Pro use FSR, and which games support PSSR?
For the feature Sony calls PSSR, PS5 Pro is the relevant platform. Sony’s statements about its AMD collaboration do not establish that PS5 Pro simply runs the PC version of FSR 4. PSSR support is game-specific, and Sony’s February 2026 announcement said it had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles “to date.” That is Sony’s dated count as of February 27, 2026, not a current total.
Sony’s March 2026 rollout announcement names titles including Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Crimson Desert among games receiving upgraded PSSR. Availability can depend on the game’s update and implementation; check its graphics settings and patch notes for the platform and version you play. Sony’s rollout article provides its announcement details.

What does “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” do?
Sony describes an optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting for PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. It is not a way to add PSSR to unsupported games, and Sony cautions that results vary by title. If the setting causes unexpected visual effects in a game, Sony says players can turn it off. The exact setting and its availability depend on the supported title. Sony’s March 2026 announcement describes the rollout and setting.
Does base PS5 support PSSR?
Do not assume it does. In an announcement dated October 1, 2026, Sony introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a performance-tier AI upscaling library for base PS5, and described it as distinct from PSSR on PS5 Pro. Sony presents QSSR as improving image detail and stability on PS5, but that is Sony’s own product characterization, not an independent comparison. Sony’s QSSR announcement explains the distinction.

How should you choose between PSSR and FSR?
- Start with the game and platform. Confirm which upscaler the specific version supports; the technology names alone do not tell you what a game uses.
- Compare like with like. If both options are available, use the same scene and graphics mode, and consider motion, artifacts, stability and detail rather than judging only a still image.
- Check the trade-off you care about. Upscaling reconstructs an output image from game-rendered input; assess image quality alongside frame rate and graphics settings.
- Treat vendor and developer descriptions as scoped claims. Sony’s and developers’ descriptions show intended or reported results in named games, not a cross-platform verdict for all titles.
Sony introduced PS5 Pro in September 2024 with claims of 67% more GPU compute units than the then-current PS5, 28% faster memory and up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Those are Sony’s console-hardware comparisons, not measurements of PSSR against FSR. Sony’s launch announcement provides the original context.
