Why gamers are worried about the PS6 price
The concern has a real basis: Sony has identified higher memory-semiconductor prices and supply shortages as challenges for hardware profitability. In its FY2025 filing, the company said it expects those pressures to affect hardware and described flexibly adjusting unit sales and promotions to manage profitability. That is evidence of cost pressure—not evidence that Sony has settled on a particular PS6 price.

Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Hideaki Nishino said the company does not intend to absorb all component cost increases or sell hardware at significant losses. In Sony’s June 5, 2026 investor Q&A, Nishino said: “As for pricing, it is not realistic for us to absorb all component cost increases, and we have already implemented some price increases outside Japan. At present, however, sales are proceeding as planned, and we do not believe this has led to a decline in customer demand. As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses.”

What Sony has said about PS6 timing and price
Sony’s public comments point to ongoing assessment rather than a settled launch plan. In the June 2026 Q&A, the company said it is investing in a next-generation platform and evaluating technology, hardware and business-model scenarios. It also said timing decisions involve technology, marketing, regional dynamics and pricing.
GameSpot reported that Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki said the company had not decided when to launch the new console or at what price. The report quotes him as saying: “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices,” in its coverage of Sony’s financial-results call. This is a reported statement, not a published PS6 price announcement.

These are current-generation US recommended prices reported by the Associated Press, not promised prices for future hardware. Sony’s FY2025 Game & Network Services segment reported revenue of ¥4,685,651 million and operating income of ¥463,258 million; the filing says segment operating income reached a record. Those are segment totals, not console unit economics, so they cannot be used to derive a PS6 retail price.
Should you buy a PS5 now or wait?
There is no confirmed PS6 price or launch date against which to compare a PS5 purchase. Make the choice around the console and games you can use now, your local PS5 price, and how much you value having next-generation hardware as soon as it arrives.

Sony said PS5 was in its sixth year in June 2026. Former PlayStation Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has argued that rising component costs could make a longer current generation sensible, saying Sony “might be looking [at] pushing back the launch of next gen” and should keep the current generation going as long as possible. That is Yoshida’s personal view, not a Sony schedule or announcement.
What Sony’s player numbers do—and don’t—mean
Sony reported more than 93 million PS5 units installed and 125 million monthly active user accounts as of March 2026. Those figures show the scale of the current PlayStation business; they do not predict PS6 demand, launch timing or price.
