A rumored Sony handheld may include an SD card slot, but this is unconfirmed: Sony has not announced a PS6 handheld or confirmed its storage design. The claim comes from Moore’s Law Is Dead, as relayed by Notebookcheck on October 6, 2026, and the report describes the storage details as conjecture.
What the rumor claims about storage
Notebookcheck says Moore’s Law Is Dead discussed schematics for a rumored Sony handheld that reportedly show an SD card slot. The leaker reportedly thinks the device’s base NVMe SSD may not be upgradeable, with an SD card offering additional space for data. Neither detail is a confirmed specification.

The reported idea is therefore an internal NVMe SSD plus a possible removable-card slot—not a confirmed promise that users could replace or expand the system’s main drive.

Could an SD card load games directly?
The report relays the leaker’s speculation that an SD card might be too slow to load games directly, but could be fast enough to move game data onto the SSD. That is not a tested performance result or a confirmed feature. The report does not establish whether games could run from a card, whether copying would be required, or what other data the card might hold.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
What is not known about card compatibility
No card format, speed class, capacity limit, compatibility policy, or supported use is identified. Notebookcheck says it remains unknown whether Sony would require a particular standard or allow other cards with limitations. There is not enough information to choose or recommend a card for this rumored device.
If Sony announces a handheld, the practical details to check will be its supported card format and maximum capacity, actual read-speed requirements, whether games can run from removable storage or must be copied to internal storage, and any vendor compatibility restrictions. Those are open questions, not existing specifications.

How to read the report
Notebookcheck’s October 6, 2026 report attributes the claims to Moore’s Law Is Dead and explicitly notes that Sony has not confirmed a PS6 handheld. Treat the SD slot, non-upgradeable SSD, and proposed transfer workflow as rumor rather than product information.
