Start with the games you want to play
A console’s price matters less if it cannot play the games you care about. Write down your must-play titles and check their current availability on each platform before comparing hardware. Exclusive games, release timing, and platform availability can change, so verify the specific titles rather than relying on a general claim that one console has the larger or better library.

If you are considering a switch, include the games you already own in that list. A game may be available on both platforms but not transfer with you: check whether your copy is a supported disc or digital license, and whether the title is available on the console you plan to buy.
Compare prices for equivalent editions
These are dated US price snapshots, not a live, same-day comparison. PlayStation Direct listed a 1 TB PS5 at $649 and an 825 GB PS5 Digital Edition at $599 when accessed on October 7, 2026. Microsoft’s US price sheet dated October 3, 2025 listed Xbox Series X at $649.99, Series X Digital at $599.99, and the 2 TB Galaxy Black Special Edition at $799.99. The Xbox figures do not establish current October 2026 retail prices.

Check current local listings before deciding: the available figures come from different dates, and price, bundles, storage, and drive configuration can vary by region and retailer. Compare the same kind of edition and account for any bundle you would actually buy. The PS5 listing is a volatile store snapshot, not a promise of a lasting price.
Check whether your existing games will carry over
PS4 games on PS5
PlayStation says PS5 can play PS4 games on disc or digitally and that more than 4,000 games are ready to play across PS4 and PS5. That is a count of games playable across the two generations, not a count of PS5-only titles. Support and features can vary by game, so check your particular titles and discs on PlayStation’s PS5 backward compatibility page.

Older Xbox games on Series X
Xbox Series X|S supports select Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games—not every game from those generations. Xbox notes that features vary by title. Check the specific games you own using Xbox’s backward compatibility information before treating an older library as a reason to switch.
Decide whether you need a disc drive
Disc support affects more than how you install a game. If you own physical games, borrow or buy used discs, or want to keep using supported discs, verify that the exact console edition has the drive you need and that your games are compatible. The cited product listings distinguish digital editions, but do not establish every bundle’s drive configuration; check the specific listing before checkout.

If you buy only digital games, a disc drive may not be useful to you. Make the choice based on how you actually acquire games and use your current collection, not just on the edition’s name or a small difference in listed price.
Count subscriptions only when you will use them
PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass both have tier-specific benefits and game access, but they are not interchangeable catalog counts. PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium differ in benefits; Extra includes Game Catalog access, while Premium adds Classics Catalog, trials, and streaming benefits. Membership terms and regional availability apply, games can leave the catalog, and the catalog page showed 642 games when accessed October 7, 2026. Microsoft says availability varies by time, region, plan, and platform; subscriptions are subject to terms and recurring billing. - List your must-play games. Verify which console supports each one now, including any platform-specific releases you care about.
- Check your existing library. Confirm title-by-title compatibility for physical and digital games; do not assume every older game transfers.
- Choose your drive needs. Decide whether you need supported discs, then confirm the exact edition’s drive configuration.
- Compare live local prices. Match region, storage, bundle status, and drive configuration, and check the listings on the same date.
- Evaluate subscriptions separately. Compare the current tiers, renewal terms, and games or features you would genuinely use.
So, which console is the better value?
Choose the console that gives you access to the games you want and the library you can keep using at a total cost that makes sense for your habits. A physical-game owner should prioritize verified disc support and compatibility; a digital-only buyer should compare digital-edition prices and the games available to them. If a subscription is part of the decision, base its value on the current plan and titles you will actually play—not a raw catalog total.
