Sony says it is on by default on supported consoles, but the result depends on the game. Compare the same scene with the option on and off, including while moving, and keep the setting that looks better to you.
What Enhance PSSR Image Quality changes
PSSR is Sony’s image reconstruction and upscaling technology for compatible PS5 Pro games. Sony describes it as analyzing game images pixel by pixel while upscaling them. The optional system setting applies to PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR; it does not make every PS5 game use the technology.

Sony says the upgraded PSSR aims to reconstruct images more precisely and improve stability in motion, but cautions that results vary by title. The option is intended to affect image quality; it is not a universal frame-rate mode or a guarantee of a consistent performance cost across games. Sony’s PS5 Pro page describes the technology and publishes a current list of supported games.

Where to find the setting
- On your PS5 Pro, open Settings.
- Select Screen and Video, then Video Output.
- Choose Enhance PSSR Image Quality to turn the option on or off.
Sony’s support instructions say the option is on by default and available only on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. If you do not see it, check your console model and Sony’s PS5 Pro Enhance PSSR Image Quality support page.

How to compare image quality and performance
There is no single best setting for every game or player. Make a controlled visual comparison rather than judging from different scenes or a still image alone:
- Confirm that the game supports PSSR. Sony’s supported-game list is a useful starting point, though game support can change as titles launch and receive updates.
- Choose a repeatable scene with small details, such as hair, cloth, foliage, or thin geometry. Keep the game’s other graphics settings unchanged.
- View the scene with Enhance PSSR Image Quality on, then off. If the game allows it, repeat the comparison while panning the camera or moving through the scene.
- Look for fine-detail clarity and whether the image remains visually stable during movement. Also note any unexpected or distracting visual effects.
- Keep the setting that looks preferable in that game. If the option produces unexpected effects, turn it off; you can change it again later.
These are visual checks, not a promise of a particular frame rate or a benchmark. Sony’s March 2026 explanation says the setting’s results vary by game and that players can disable it if they encounter unexpected effects. Read Sony’s March 16, 2026 PlayStation Blog post.

Why results differ between games
PSSR support and implementation are title-specific. Sony said on February 27, 2026, that PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles at that time; that is a dated count, not a current total. In the same announcement, PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny described PSSR as “an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them.” Sony’s February 27, 2026 announcement.

For example, Sony’s June 24, 2026 article about Doom: The Dark Ages describes that game’s use of motion, depth, exposure, and sub-pixel sampling. That is a title-specific example, not a description of every game’s PSSR implementation. Read Sony’s article about PSSR in Doom: The Dark Ages.

Defaults can be game-specific, too. Sony said in May 2026 that upgraded PSSR would be enabled at launch in 007 First Light; that launch configuration does not establish the default for other titles or guarantee that the game’s settings will remain unchanged after updates.
