Which console is better for the games you play?
Start with specific games, not a general list of “exclusives.” Check whether the titles you want are available on each console in your region, whether friends you play with use a particular platform, and whether you already own games tied to one account. A library you can keep using can matter more than a modest difference on a specification sheet.

Xbox says Series X supports thousands of games across four Xbox generations, but compatibility depends on the individual title. Check the Xbox Series X compatibility information for games you intend to play. If you have a substantial PlayStation digital library or a list of must-play PlayStation games, that may make PS5 the more practical choice. Neither platform’s game catalog is fixed, so verify availability before purchasing.
How do the consoles compare on price in 2026?
The confirmed prices below are U.S. figures, not a global comparison. Sony announced recommended prices effective April 2, 2026. Separately, PlayStation Direct displayed slightly lower amounts when checked; a live listing can change and is not a replacement for Sony’s announced recommendation.

Sony’s announcement described its decision this way: “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally.” See Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement for the stated recommended prices. PlayStation Direct showed $649 for PS5 and $599 for Digital Edition when checked; those are observed storefront listings, not the announced MSRP. Check PlayStation Direct’s current U.S. listings and local retailers for the price you can actually buy at.
Microsoft’s June 25, 2026 Xbox Wire notice said U.S. prices would rise by $150 for 1TB Xbox consoles and $100 for 512GB models, effective August 1, 2026, and that the 2TB model would be sunset. It did not give a final Series X MSRP in the notice, and Microsoft’s product page did not provide a usable price. Check an in-stock seller’s current listing rather than relying on an undated figure. Prices, stock, and models outside the U.S. need separate local verification.

What do subscriptions add, and what do they cost?
Both ecosystems have subscription options, but compare the features you will use and the recurring cost—not just the size of a game catalog. Sony’s U.S. PlayStation Plus page listed these annual prices when checked in October 2026:

Xbox’s subscription ecosystem is a relevant part of the buying decision, but a current price or tier comparison is not established here. Check the live Xbox subscription options in your region and compare the games and features you will actually use against the PlayStation plans above.
Should you choose a disc or all-digital console?
Choose a disc-drive model if you buy physical games, borrow or lend them, or want the option to resell them. A digital model can suit a buyer who gets games online and does not need a drive. Compare the specific console SKU and its current price: Xbox lists a 1TB Carbon Black Series X with a disc drive and a 1TB Robot White all-digital model. Microsoft says supported Xbox One and Series discs must remain in the drive to play after installation.

On PlayStation, compare the standard PS5 with the Digital Edition and confirm the hardware configuration of the exact listing. Whichever platform you choose, physical games can make a disc drive useful, while digital purchases are tied to the relevant account and platform ecosystem. Do not assume that a digital library can be transferred between PlayStation and Xbox.

What happens to your older games and account library?
If you are switching from an older console, list the games you own and check title-by-title compatibility before counting them as part of the new console’s value. Microsoft’s “four generations” description refers to supported Xbox titles, not every game ever released for Xbox. Disc play also requires the disc drive and the original disc for supported games.

For either system, consider where your digital purchases, saves, friends, and subscriptions live. These are platform-specific considerations, so an attractive console price may not offset the cost of rebuilding a library or losing access to games you still play.
Do the specifications mean Xbox is faster?
No single published specification settles real-world performance across all games. A September 2026 secondary comparison lists a higher Xbox GPU throughput figure on paper, but cautions that the number is not a universal performance comparison and says multiplatform games run similarly. That is not a controlled benchmark. Performance depends on the specific game, patch, resolution, graphics mode, and console revision; look for a like-for-like test of the games and modes you care about rather than choosing by teraflops alone. How should you compare storage and ownership costs?
Console price is only part of the total. Check included storage, whether the model has a disc drive, and the cost of any expansion you need. Microsoft says the Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card, sold separately, matches internal SSD performance. USB 3.1 external hard drives are also supported, but that does not establish that they run every optimized Series game at full internal-SSD performance. If fast extra storage for Series games is important, compare the expansion card’s local price and capacity with your needs.

- Add the console’s live local price to the cost of subscriptions you expect to renew.
- Include any storage expansion or extra controller you actually need.
- For physical games, factor in whether you will buy, borrow, lend, or resell discs.
- For subscription catalogs, account for changing availability rather than treating included games as permanent purchases.
A practical way to make the choice
- Write down your must-play games. Confirm each game’s platform availability in your region and check whether you already own it digitally or on disc.
- Choose your library priority. If keeping a PlayStation library or playing PlayStation-specific titles leads, favor PS5. If supported older Xbox games or an Xbox library lead, favor Series X.
- Decide whether you need a disc drive. Compare the exact disc and digital models available locally, not just the console family name.
- Price the whole setup. Check current console listings, subscription plans, storage, and accessories in your region. Recheck availability and prices close to purchase.
- Use performance tests only for a real tie-breaker. Find comparisons for the same game, patch, resolution, graphics mode, and console revision.
