What the Triangle Button Is Used For (and why it fails)
On PS5, the Triangle button is a primary “context” action. It’s used for things like opening options, confirming highlighted actions, and special in-game interactions depending on the title.

Quick checks that often fix it in minutes
Before you open any settings, do these fast checks. They solve a surprising number of “button dead” reports.
- Restart the game/app you’re in, then re-test Triangle.
- Check controller battery: plug the controller into USB-C and test while charging.
- Try a different input method: if you were using Bluetooth/cordless, test with a wired connection (and vice versa).
- Remove accessories (chat headsets with odd adapters, USB hubs, nonstandard wired devices) and re-test.
- Clean the button area lightly if you see visible grime (instructions later).
Confirm it is the Triangle button (not a mapping or settings issue)
Sometimes the Triangle input is being remapped by an accessibility setting, a controller profile, or a custom layout.
Check button mapping and accessibility settings
- On your PS5, go to Settings (gear icon).
- Select Accessibility.
- Look for options related to button assignments, controller behavior, or button remapping.
- Return to the home screen and test Triangle in the menu.
If you’re using a third-party controller, check its companion app/settings as well. For the official DualSense, mapping is usually controlled by the PS5 and any installed accessibility profiles.
Test using PS5 built-in controller diagnostics
The PS5 has a controller test that can reveal whether Triangle is detected at all, or whether the console is receiving other inputs normally.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Select Controllers.
- Choose Controller Settings.
- Select Test Controller Buttons (wording may vary slightly by system version).
- Press Triangle and watch for a response indicator.
Compare Triangle behavior with other face buttons (Square, Circle, X). If Square/Circle/X work while Triangle shows no response, you’ve likely got a controller-side hardware fault.
Restart and power-cycle steps (console + controller)
Soft glitches can make a single button appear dead. A full reboot and proper controller re-pairing are safe, low-effort tests.
Restart the PS5
- Hold the PS button.
- Select Power.
- Choose Restart PS5.
Power-cycle the controller and re-pair
- Turn off the controller: press and hold the PS button, then select Turn Off Controller.
- Power off the PS5 completely (same Power menu, choose Turn Off PS5).
- Unplug the PS5 from power for 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in, power on, then turn the controller back on and test Triangle.
Check for controller hardware problems
If the diagnostics show Triangle doesn’t register, treat it as a hardware issue until proven otherwise. The goal is to fix what’s safe: debris, stiffness, and connection issues—without damaging the controller.

Inspect for debris under the button
Dust, crumbs, and pocket lint are common. They can prevent the internal contact from closing.
- Turn the controller off.
- Look around the Triangle button edge for visible debris.
- Use dry methods first: a soft, dry brush or a clean, lint-free cloth.
- If you use compressed air, apply short bursts from a distance—avoid blasting directly into seams for extended periods.
- After cleaning, re-test with the PS5’s button test.
Avoid soaking the area. Any liquid can migrate into contacts and create worse problems.

Check whether the button is physically stuck or mushy
Press Triangle gently and observe:
- No movement or you feel strong resistance.
- Intermittent travel (mushy at times, normal at others).
- Uneven feel compared to Square/Circle/X.
If it feels different, internal wear or a stuck mechanism is likely. That’s usually not fixed by software.
Look for stick drift or shared flex issues
Sometimes multiple buttons fail after drops or heavy pressure. If you also notice issues with other inputs (like D-pad inconsistencies or face-button misfires), the controller may have a loose internal connection.
At that point, cleaning helps less, and service or replacement becomes the practical path.
Update and rebuild the software state
While a dead Triangle button is more often hardware, system software updates can resolve controller input bugs. Also, some game-specific issues only resolve after updating.
Update PS5 system software
- Go to Settings.
- Select System.
- Select System Software.
- Select System Software Update.
- Follow the prompts and re-test Triangle after the update.
Update the controller firmware (indirect via system updates)
DualSense controller firmware typically updates through PS5 system updates. If you’re already updated, you can skip hunting for a separate “controller firmware” screen that may not exist for your version.
Try a different controller (fastest way to isolate the fault)
This is the cleanest diagnostic: if another DualSense works normally, the console is fine and your controller is the problem.
- Connect a different working DualSense to your PS5.
- Use Test Controller Buttons again.
- If Triangle works on the second controller, stop spending time on console settings.
If Triangle fails on both controllers in the same context, suspect game settings, an accessibility profile, or controller settings persistence in specific apps.
Button still dead? Safe repair and replacement options
If Triangle doesn’t register in the PS5 controller diagnostics and another controller works, hardware service is the next realistic step.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
- Triangle shows no response in the controller test.
- Triangle works intermittently and gets worse over time.
- You spilled liquid or dropped the controller and input failures started after.
Repeatedly opening the controller or using liquids at home increases the risk. If the button contact is worn or the internal contact membrane is damaged, professional repair is the reliable route.

Common mistakes and what to avoid
- Using alcohol or water directly under the button. Liquids can damage contacts.
- Pressing Triangle repeatedly with force for long sessions. If the contact is worn, this can accelerate failure.
- Ignoring wired vs wireless testing. If it works wired but not wireless, you may have a pairing/power issue rather than a mechanical fault.
- Skipping the controller diagnostics. Without that test, you can waste time changing settings for a hardware problem.
Troubleshooting scenarios
Here are the patterns you’ll see in the real world, and what they usually mean.
Triangle works in menus but not in games
That can be a game mapping issue. Some games use their own control schemes and may ignore or reinterpret button inputs.
Try reloading the game, resetting in-game controls, and testing Triangle in the PS5 home UI and the controller diagnostics.
Triangle works on the PS5 home screen but not in specific apps
App-specific input handling can cause this. First update the app (or reinstall if allowed) and test in other games to confirm it’s isolated.
If only one or two apps fail, it’s less likely to be controller hardware.
Triangle only works after pressing very hard
This strongly suggests a worn contact or partially stuck mechanism. Cleaning may help briefly if there’s debris, but persistent hard-press behavior typically needs service or button replacement.
Re-check with Test Controller Buttons. If the test only triggers under hard pressure, plan for repair/replacement.

Triangle works intermittently
Intermittent response can be caused by loose internal contacts or debris shifting under pressure.
Test both wired and wireless. If wired improves reliability, you might have a connection/power issue; otherwise, it’s probably hardware.
Triangle fails after cleaning with liquid or compressed air
If you used liquid, stop further cleaning attempts and let the controller dry fully in a dry area. If the issue worsens, internal damage is possible.
At that point, the safest route is professional inspection. Avoid repeated spraying or liquid “resets.”

How do I know if Triangle is hardware or software?
Use Settings > Accessories > Controllers > Controller Settings > Test Controller Buttons. If Triangle doesn’t register there while other face buttons do, it’s very likely hardware.
Can I fix a dead Triangle button without opening the controller?
Often, yes—if the cause is debris or a temporary stuck mechanism. Start with dry cleaning and diagnostics. If Triangle still fails the button test, opening the controller or getting service is usually required.
What if Triangle works on another DualSense but not my controller?
Then your PS5 is fine. Your DualSense is the culprit. The most reliable next steps are service or replacement, especially if diagnostics show Triangle never registers.
Does using a wired connection help?
Yes for diagnosis. If Triangle works only when wired, suspect pairing/power/Bluetooth state issues. If Triangle fails both wired and wireless, hardware contact problems are the top suspect.
Will system resets erase my games?
Basic restarts won’t. If you do a deeper reset (like factory reset), that can affect local data. Stick to restart/power-cycle and controller tests first.
Bottom Line
Start by testing Triangle in the PS5 controller diagnostics and comparing behavior with other face buttons. If Triangle doesn’t register there, you’re almost certainly dealing with a controller hardware issue rather than a console setting.
Once you confirm it’s controller-side—especially if a second DualSense works—avoid risky liquid/over-spraying attempts. The most time-efficient path is dry cleanup (if you suspect debris) and then repair or replacement if the button remains dead or intermittently registers.
