What it means that the Android 13 August security patch OTA is live

Which Pixel devices this typically covers
Pixel OTA availability depends on device model, region, and your current software build. Usually, supported models in the Pixel line receive the monthly patch updates around the same window.
Check your exact device by verifying your current Build number and Security patch level (both shown in Settings). Then confirm whether the OTA is listed for your model in the official update resources for your region.

1) Confirm you’re on Android 13 already
Open Settings → About phone → Android version. If you’re not on Android 13, you may need an intermediate update path.
2) Check storage and battery
Ensure you have at least 2–3 GB of free storage. Keep the phone on a charger if the update is large.

3) Back up what matters
OTA updates usually preserve your data. Still, backup is cheap insurance.
- Use Google One or your preferred backup flow
- Verify Photos and key accounts sync properly
4) Know your bootloader state
If you’re planning to sideload or flash images, you’ll need to consider whether the device is unlocked and whether you can boot into recovery/bootloader modes.

- Some devices can sideload OTA packages without a full factory reset, but only with correct matching builds
Method 1: Install the Pixel OTA from Settings (recommended)
This is the most reliable approach because the update package is matched to your current build automatically.
- Open Settings
- Tap System (or System & updates)
- Tap System update
- Wait for the check to complete
- Tap Download and install if August patch is shown
- Confirm any prompts and keep the phone connected until it reboots
After reboot, verify: Settings → About phone → Security patch level and Android version.
Method 2: Download the OTA package and sideload it with ADB
Use this method when the OTA doesn’t appear in Settings but is available for your device model and your build matches. The big requirement is compatibility: the OTA package must match the software you’re currently running.
What you need
- A supported Pixel device on the correct current build
- A computer with ADB installed
- The correct OTA update zip file for your device and build
- A USB data cable
On the computer: prepare ADB
Verify your device is detected.
- Enable Developer options (Settings → About phone → tap Build number 7 times)
- In Developer options, enable USB debugging
- Connect the phone to your computer
- On first connection, accept the USB debugging authorization prompt on the phone
- Run:
adb devices
You should see your device listed with a device ID.

- Reboot to recovery: from the power menu, choose Recovery if available, or use ADB:
adb reboot recovery - In recovery, find Apply update → Apply from ADB (wording can vary)
- On your computer, run the sideload command:
adb sideload <ota-file.zip> - Wait until the transfer completes, then reboot system
If the OTA is incompatible, sideload will fail quickly or the update won’t complete—stop and switch to factory image flashing in that case.
Method 3: Flash the factory image (when OTA fails or you need a clean reset)
If OTA installation keeps failing or you’re troubleshooting deep issues, the official factory image is the most deterministic route. It replaces system partitions and typically involves wiping user data depending on your flashing approach.
Understand the tradeoffs
- Best for: stubborn install errors, mismatched software state, returning to a known-good configuration
- Risk: may wipe data; requires careful steps
Prerequisites
- Unlocked bootloader (commonly required for factory images)
- The correct factory image package for your Pixel model
- ADB and Fastboot tools on your computer
- USB data cable
Flash using the official images workflow
Most Pixel factory image packages include an automated script for supported platforms. Use the version intended for your OS to reduce mistakes.
- Download the official factory image for your exact Pixel model and region
- Extract the package on your computer
- Reboot the phone into bootloader/fastboot mode
- Connect the phone via USB
- Run the provided flashing script for your OS (commonly named something like
flash-all) - Allow the script to complete, then reboot
After the first boot, confirm Security patch level under About phone.

Troubleshooting when the update won’t install
If the OTA download fails, keeps restarting, or ends with an installation error, use these targeted checks.
Check the update status details
Go to Settings → System → System update and look for error codes or repeated download attempts. Sometimes stopping and rebooting before trying again helps.
Try again after a reboot and network change
- Reboot the phone
- Switch Wi‑Fi networks (or use mobile data if your carrier setup allows)
- Retry the download in Settings
If sideload fails
- Confirm you used the OTA zip that matches your current build number
- Use
adb devicesto verify a stable connection - Keep the screen timeout from interrupting processes (don’t lock mid-transfer)
If factory flashing fails
- Re-enter fastboot mode and reconnect
- Confirm Fastboot can see the device:
fastboot devices - Re-run the flashing script only after you’ve resolved connection issues
When you should stop and use the official path
If you’re repeatedly getting install errors after multiple OTA attempts, don’t keep retrying the same incompatible package. Switch to the correct factory image workflow for your model.
Common mistakes that cause boot loops or install errors
- Using the wrong OTA zip (mismatch with current build is the #1 cause of sideload failure)
- Low battery during download or installation
- Interrupting USB transfers mid sideload
- Flashing a factory image for the wrong Pixel model
- Skipping backup before methods that can wipe data

Will installing the August security patch erase my data?
A standard OTA from Settings usually keeps your data. Sideload and especially factory image flashing can involve wipes depending on the exact package and flashing workflow.
What if sideload completes but the update doesn’t apply?
That often indicates a package mismatch with your current build or a corrupted download. Re-check your build number, redownload the OTA zip, and retry.
Can I update if my bootloader is locked/unlocked?
Settings OTA typically works regardless of bootloader state. Factory image flashing often requires an unlocked bootloader, while sideload depends on compatibility and device state.
