Sony’s US product page lists 1 TB for the PS5 console and 825 GB for the PS5 Digital Edition, and you won’t get all of it for games. Discs don’t avoid the problem either, because a game disc installs the game onto the console. To add space for games you can launch directly, use a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD. A USB drive works as an archive for PS5 games and as a play-from drive for PS4 games.
How much storage does a PS5 have?
The current US PlayStation 5 product page (viewed 2026-10-05) lists 1 TB for the PS5 console and 825 GB for the PS5 Digital Edition. Regional lineups and model revisions can differ, so check which console you own before relying on a figure.

Those numbers are advertised capacity, not free space. Sony’s console documentation says part of the SSD is reserved for system administration, maintenance and additional options, so the room left for games is smaller.
Do disc games use storage?
Yes. Sony’s setup guide says that inserting a game disc makes the game install automatically. The disc gives you access to the game, but the game still needs space on the console.
#1 Best Overall
- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Sony’s M.2 support page also advises letting a disc game finish its full installation before you troubleshoot playback problems.

M.2 SSD: the direct-play upgrade
According to Sony’s M.2 requirements, a supported drive can download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games and media apps.
Sony’s listed requirements
- Interface: PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe (Key M). M.2 SATA SSDs aren’t supported.
- Capacity: 250 GB to 8 TB.
- Supported lengths: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110.
- Maximum width: 25 mm.
- Maximum thickness: 11.25 mm, including the cooling structure.
- Speed: Sony recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s.
- Cooling: effective heat dissipation, such as a heatsink or heat transfer sheet.
Buying checks
- Measure the drive with its heatsink attached, because the 11.25 mm limit includes cooling.
- Treat a manufacturer’s speed claim as a threshold check only. It doesn’t guarantee the same performance in every game.
- Meeting the listed figures doesn’t make a drive guaranteed to work, because Sony doesn’t guarantee every third-party drive.
USB extended storage: archive and PS4 play
Compatible PS5 games can sit on a USB extended-storage drive, but they must be moved back to the console or M.2 drive before you can play them. Compatible PS4 games can be played straight from USB, according to the PS5 features page.

The official FAQ (published 2020-11-09) says to use SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0) or later, with a minimum of 250 GB and a maximum of 8 TB. It warns that not all drives work and that an extended-storage drive can’t be used through a USB hub. Where the FAQ and Sony’s current support pages differ, trust the current pages.
The same FAQ says reinstalling PS5 games from USB extended storage is faster than re-downloading them or copying them from a disc. That makes USB a good fit if you rotate through a large library.
Where saves and captures go
Sony’s storage management page (Spanish-language) lays out what each storage area holds:

Open Settings > Storage and look at what’s installed. Games and apps you can download again are the easiest to remove. Sony’s storage page also describes a Customize option on some titles for deleting selected content, though that option isn’t available for every game.
Do you need a disc drive?
Sony’s disc drive page lists the optional removable drive for compatible Digital Edition model groups (CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 series). Pairing it during setup requires an internet connection. It lets you use discs, but it adds no storage, so it isn’t a capacity upgrade. Confirm your model number before buying.
Quick Recap
Which option should you choose?
- You want more PS5 games ready to launch: buy a compliant PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 drive with a heatsink that fits.
- You want cheap capacity for a library you can shuffle: use a compatible USB 3.0 or later drive. Remember PS5 games must be moved back before play.
- You have a big PS4 library: USB works well, since those games play directly from it.
- You own a Digital Edition and want discs: check your model for drive compatibility, and budget for storage separately.
