The PS5’s SSD is most visible when it changes what happens between actions: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart turns dimension-hopping into traversal, Returnal gets players back to another attempt quickly, and Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores streams detail during fast flight. Those are distinct outcomes—not proof that every PS5 game was redesigned around storage. The available developer evidence supports three specific examples and several broader design signals, rather than seven equally documented case studies.
What the PS5 SSD changes—and what it does not prove
The PS5’s SSD works as part of a custom storage and I/O system intended to move game assets rapidly. Sony’s 2020 FAQ lists a raw read bandwidth of 5.5 GB/s; that is a hardware specification, not a measured loading time or a guarantee that every game uses the storage in the same way. Sony’s PS5 FAQ describes the system’s role in asset streaming.

For players, the design effects fall into different categories: a fast data-access system can support an explicit mechanic, reduce waits between actions, or give developers more room to consider streaming-heavy worlds. The first two can be seen in particular games; broader predictions should not be mistaken for shipped features.
Three games with clear player-facing results
1. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart: dimension changes become traversal
This is the clearest example of storage speed connected to a visible mechanic. PlayStation describes worlds swapping in and out in seconds, letting Ratchet and Rivet jump between dimensions and teleport without conventional loading screens. The SSD and custom I/O system support the transitions that make those jumps part of movement through a level, rather than a break between separate stages. PlayStation’s explanation of how the PS5 made Rift Apart possible details that connection.

- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
2. Returnal: less waiting between attempts
Returnal is built around repeated attempts. PlayStation says the SSD supports near-instant loading after death and rapid portal jumps between worlds. The design effect is pacing: players can get back into the action with less time spent waiting. That does not mean the SSD changes the game’s roguelike structure; it shortens gaps around actions the game already asks players to repeat. PlayStation’s Returnal page describes the loading and portal-travel benefits.
3. Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores: detail during fast flight
In the Burning Shores expansion, the player can fly quickly over a detailed version of the Los Angeles area. Guerrilla says that dense environment and aerial traversal require fast streaming technology, particularly when the player sees a large amount of the landscape at once. This is an example of SSD-era streaming helping sustain detail during movement—not evidence that the SSD alone produced the visual result. Guerrilla’s developer interview discusses the streaming demands.

Three more developer signals, with narrower claims
4. Demon’s Souls: a changed design mindset
In a 2020 PlayStation developer roundup, the Demon’s Souls team said the SSD was changing how it thought about design. That is a useful signal that faster storage affected developers’ assumptions, but the statement available there does not identify a particular SSD-dependent mechanic in the remake. It should be read as developer context, not as proof of a specific feature. The PlayStation developer roundup contains the comment.

The same roundup includes a developer comment associated with Miles Morales about the SSD’s value beyond near-instant loading and fast travel, including more rapid loading and display of detailed assets. That supports a general point about streaming and presentation, but it does not establish a specific game mechanic from the available statement.

6. Far Cry 6: an expectation for future open worlds
Neil Hill, lead programmer on Far Cry 6, described the SSD as a “gamechanger” and anticipated innovation in streaming and open-world design as the generation matured. This is a forward-looking view from a developer, not evidence that Far Cry 6 itself demonstrates a particular SSD-dependent feature. Its value here is as a signal of what developers expected faster storage to make possible. The comment appears in the PlayStation developer roundup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a verified seven-game feature list
The title’s seven-game framing would imply seven comparable, documented examples. The available official material does not establish that: three games have specific player-facing results tied to fast loading or streaming, while the other developer comments provide broader context or expectations. Naming a seventh game without direct evidence for its SSD-related design outcome would make the list less useful, not more complete. The evidence also does not quantify how much game design changed overall or provide a general percentage reduction in loading times.
