Choose the PS5 Slim Disc Edition if you want a built-in disc drive for physical games or compatible media. Choose the Digital Edition if you plan to download your games; supported models can accept a separately sold disc drive later. For more space to install and play PS5 games, add a compatible M.2 SSD. USB extended storage can archive PS5 games, but they must be copied back before you can play them.
Should you get the PS5 Slim Disc or Digital Edition?
The main difference is the disc drive. The Disc Edition has one built in, making it the straightforward choice if you want to use disc games. The Digital Edition is intended for a downloaded library, though certain models can be upgraded with an add-on drive.

Sony’s 2025 CFI-21XX instruction manual lists those capacities for the console and Digital Edition. They are nominal SSD capacities; some space is reserved for system administration, maintenance, and additional options. Check the model number on the specific console before buying an add-on drive: compatibility is stated for the CFI-2000/7000 model groups, not every console sold under the Slim name. When comparing bundles, check the current local price, included storage, and any bundled games. Prices and bundle contents vary, and the listed SSD capacity alone does not establish which edition is the better value.

Can you add a disc drive to the PS5 Slim Digital Edition later?
Yes, if the console is in a supported CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 model group. The drive is an add-on, not an upgrade guaranteed for every PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. On first setup, the console needs an internet connection to pair the drive. Confirm the model number on the console before purchasing the accessory.

M.2 SSD: install and launch games from the drive
A compatible M.2 NVMe SSD is the expansion option for storing, downloading, updating, and launching PS5 games. Sony’s M.2 SSD requirements and installation guide specifies these limits:

Check the SSD’s complete dimensions with its heatsink or other cooling structure attached. Meeting the listed specifications does not guarantee compatibility with every third-party drive. Sony also cautions that games do not necessarily perform identically to when they run from the console’s internal SSD, even if an M.2 drive exceeds the recommended read speed.
For installation, Sony’s guide calls for a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver. The console must format a new drive for first use, and formatting erases data on that drive. Back up anything you want to keep before formatting.
USB extended storage: keep games installed, but archive PS5 titles
USB extended storage is useful for keeping compatible game installations without using space on the console SSD. However, PS5 games stored on USB cannot launch from there: copy them back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before playing. Use M.2 expansion when you want PS5 games to remain playable directly from the added drive. Sony explains the distinction in its USB extended storage guidance.

- You want to play PS5 games from added storage: Choose a compatible M.2 SSD and verify its interface, capacity, form factor, and full dimensions with cooling included.
- You want to keep a library of games installed but do not mind copying PS5 titles back before playing: USB extended storage can serve as an archive.
- You only need more room for a few titles: Compare the cost and setup of an M.2 drive with your available console storage before buying; expansion is optional.
- You want the option of physical games: Choose the Disc Edition or verify that a Digital Edition’s exact model group supports the add-on drive.
