There is no single privacy switch that makes an AI chat private. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini provide different controls for model improvement, chat history or activity, temporary conversations, and personalization. For a sensitive one-off question, use the provider’s temporary mode where available, turn off personalization if offered, avoid feedback buttons and connected tools, and do not enter credentials or confidential information.
What to compare before changing a setting
Check four separate things: whether chats may be used to improve models, whether they appear in ordinary history or activity, how long temporary or deleted content may be retained, and whether memory, connected services, or human review can still apply. The controls and defaults can differ between personal accounts and managed workspaces, and labels or eligibility may change. Confirm the options shown in your own account.

How to stop chats being used to improve models
ChatGPT
In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data controls and switch off “Improve the model for everyone.” This applies to new conversations. It does not delete conversations already saved in chat history; history and model-improvement use are separate controls. OpenAI also says that submitting feedback may result in the associated conversation being used for training even if you have opted out. Claude
Consumer Claude users can change the model-improvement privacy setting. Anthropic says turning it off excludes new chats and coding sessions from future training. This is distinct from starting an Incognito chat: the setting controls future model-improvement use, while Incognito is a conversation mode with its own history and retention behavior. Feedback is a separate exception; Anthropic says a conversation associated with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down may be kept for up to five years and used for training. Gemini Apps
Use Gemini Apps Activity to review or delete activity, change auto-delete, and manage whether activity is used to improve Google AI. Google documents human review for some saved activity, including specified image and video sharing scenarios when Keep Activity is on. That conditional description should not be read as saying every Gemini conversation is reviewed by a person. See the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub for account-specific controls and explanations.

Are temporary or incognito chats saved?
ChatGPT Temporary Chat
Temporary Chats stay out of ordinary chat history, are not used to improve models while temporary, and do not create or update memories. They are not necessarily unpersonalized: existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins may still apply unless you disable personalization. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety. If you save the conversation, it becomes an ordinary chat governed by your account settings. See the Temporary Chat FAQ.
Claude Incognito
Claude Incognito chats are excluded from training and do not appear in ordinary history or Claude memory. Anthropic says they are generally retained for 30 days; Enterprise retention settings can allow a longer period. A thumbs-up or thumbs-down on a conversation may trigger the separate feedback retention and training terms described above. See Claude’s Incognito guidance.

Gemini activity controls
Google’s Privacy Hub documents controls for Gemini Apps Activity, including review, deletion, auto-delete, and data use. The available information does not establish a universal temporary-chat guarantee for every Gemini app and account, so check the controls displayed in your account rather than treating “activity” settings as equivalent to an incognito mode.
Does turning off training delete chat history?
No. These controls serve different purposes. OpenAI explicitly says regular ChatGPT chats can remain in history after “Improve the model for everyone” is turned off. In Gemini, activity review and deletion are managed through Gemini Apps Activity. In Claude, the model-improvement preference is distinct from Incognito conversations and their retention. If your goal is to remove saved content, use the service’s separate history or activity deletion controls; opting out of model improvement alone is not a deletion request.

Practical choices for more privacy
- For a one-off sensitive question: start the service’s designated temporary or private conversation mode where available, and turn off personalization if the service offers that control.
- For an ongoing opt-out: switch off the model-improvement or activity control, then separately delete existing history or activity if you want it removed.
- For any service: avoid feedback buttons on sensitive conversations and do not connect tools or services that would send the content elsewhere. Connected services have their own data handling.
- For work or school accounts: check workspace rules. An organization may apply administrator controls that an individual user cannot override.
- For highly sensitive information: do not paste passwords, financial account credentials, medical identifiers, or confidential work material into a consumer chatbot just because a privacy toggle is off.
