PS5 Rest Mode FAQs: Power Use, Downloads, and Safe Shutdowns

PS5 Rest Mode can keep downloads, updates, and controller charging available while using less power than leaving the console on. Here is how its settings work and how to shut down without risking data corruption.

PS5 Rest Mode is a low-power state between leaving the console on and turning it off. With the right settings, it can keep an internet connection for downloads and updates, supply USB power for controller charging, and preserve suspended activity. It is not the same as shutting down, and you should never unplug the console while its indicator is lit or blinking.

What is PS5 Rest Mode?

PlayStation defines three PS5 power states: on, Rest Mode, and off. Rest Mode reduces the console’s activity while allowing selected background functions to continue. The orange power indicator identifies Rest Mode; a white indicator means the console is on, and no light means it is off.

Rest Mode is useful when you want the PS5 to perform a limited task after you stop playing. Depending on your settings, the console can remain connected to the internet, download games and updates, and provide power to a USB-connected controller. Those features are optional, so Rest Mode behavior depends on what you enable under Power Saving.

It is also different from leaving a game or app running while the console is fully on. The on state uses the console’s normal operating power. Rest Mode enters a reduced-power condition, while the off state ends the console’s active operation and background functions.

Does PS5 download games in Rest Mode?

Yes, but only when the console can reach the internet and the relevant Rest Mode setting is enabled. PlayStation says a connected PS5 can download games purchased through the PlayStation App and pre-ordered games while in Rest Mode. The same support guidance covers automatic game and system-software updates.

Enable internet access in Rest Mode

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose Power Saving.
  4. Open Features Available in Rest Mode.
  5. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.

After this is enabled, downloads and updates can continue while the console is in Rest Mode, provided the PS5 remains connected to your network and the download is eligible to run automatically. Rest Mode does not create an internet connection by itself. A disconnected console, a disabled setting, a failed network connection, or a download that has not been initiated will prevent background downloading.

What can download?

  • Games purchased through the PlayStation App can be sent to the console for download.
  • Pre-ordered games can download when their release and download conditions are met.
  • Automatic game updates can be downloaded when the console is online and the update is available.
  • System-software updates can also use the automatic-update function described in PlayStation’s support instructions.

To make a remote purchase or pre-order download useful, the PS5 must be left connected to the internet. If you disable Stay Connected to the Internet, the console will not be able to perform those network tasks during Rest Mode.

If a download is not progressing

  • Confirm that Stay Connected to the Internet is on at Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
  • Check the PS5’s network connection before entering Rest Mode.
  • Verify that the purchase or pre-order was made for the account and console you are using.
  • Check available storage space; an eligible download still needs room to install.
  • Wake the console and inspect the download queue if the item remains paused or fails.

These checks distinguish a Rest Mode setting problem from a network, account, storage, or download-queue problem.

How much power does PS5 Rest Mode use?

PlayStation’s current power-saving guidance states that, when Rest Mode features are enabled, the console does not automatically lower power consumption below 0.5 W when entering Rest Mode. The same guidance says that enabling more Rest Mode features increases Rest Mode consumption.

The 0.5 W figure is a manufacturer statement about the automatic power-lowering behavior of the setting. It is not a complete wattage table and does not guarantee one exact ongoing draw for every PS5, hardware revision, network condition, or combination of enabled features. No universal per-model Rest Mode consumption figure is established by that documentation.

In practical terms, Rest Mode is intended to use less power than leaving the console fully on, but it can use more than a fully powered-off PS5 because selected functions remain available. Keeping internet connectivity active for downloads and enabling USB power for charging are convenience choices that add background capability. Disabling features reduces what the console can do in Rest Mode, and PlayStation specifically notes that fewer enabled features reduce the associated power use.

Power-state comparison

PS5 state Indicator Background behavior
On White Console operates normally for games, apps, network activity, and accessories.
Rest Mode Orange Low-power state; selected internet, download, update, USB-power, and suspended-activity features can remain available.
Off No light Console is shut down; Rest Mode background functions are unavailable.

If your priority is minimum standby consumption, turn off optional Rest Mode features or use the full shutdown command. If your priority is overnight downloads or charging, Rest Mode is the appropriate state, with the understanding that those capabilities require additional standby activity.

Can I charge a controller in Rest Mode?

Yes. The PS5 can supply power to a connected controller in Rest Mode when USB power is configured for that purpose. PlayStation’s charging instructions direct users to choose Always or 3 Hours for Supply Power to USB Ports. The CFI-2000 model group also lists an Adaptive option, which adjusts charging behavior based on the controller’s remaining battery level.

Set USB power

  1. Open Settings on the PS5.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose Power Saving.
  4. Open Features Available in Rest Mode.
  5. Select Supply Power to USB Ports.
  6. Choose Always, 3 Hours, or, on a CFI-2000 model group, Adaptive. Choose Off if you do not want USB power in Rest Mode.

What the options mean

  • Always: USB ports continue receiving power throughout Rest Mode, which is convenient for charging but keeps that feature active for longer.
  • 3 Hours: USB power is available for three hours after the console enters Rest Mode, then stops.
  • Adaptive: Listed for the CFI-2000 model group; PlayStation says it can optimize charging time according to the controller’s remaining battery level.
  • Off: USB charging is not supplied while the PS5 is in Rest Mode.

Use the included USB Type-C cable or a compatible replacement cable and a supported controller family. USB-C describes the connector shape, not universal compatibility or guaranteed charging behavior for every cable and device. A spare cable can be useful if the original is unavailable, but buying one is not required to use Rest Mode.

When charging does not start

  • Confirm that Supply Power to USB Ports is not set to Off.
  • If your console is a CFI-2000 model group, check whether Adaptive is available and selected as intended.
  • Reconnect the USB Type-C cable at both ends and try another compatible cable if the connection is loose or damaged.
  • Wake the PS5 briefly to determine whether the controller, cable, or USB port is the source of the problem.

How do I put a PS5 into Rest Mode?

Open the Control Center by pressing the PS button on the controller, select the Power icon, and choose Enter Rest Mode. The indicator changes to orange. Any Rest Mode functions you enabled, such as internet access or USB power, can then operate according to their settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also leave the console in Rest Mode after finishing a download or charging session. Do not treat the orange light as an indication that the PS5 is fully off; it means the console is still in its low-power state.

How do I turn the PS5 off safely?

Use the normal shutdown command whenever possible:

  1. Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
  2. Select Power.
  3. Choose Turn Off PS5.
  4. Wait until the power indicator turns off completely.
  5. Only then disconnect the AC power cord, if disconnection is necessary.

You can also press and hold the console’s power button until it beeps. Again, wait for the indicator to go out before removing AC power.

PlayStation’s safety instruction is explicit: “Do not disconnect the AC power cord while the power indicator is lit or blinking.” The PS5 Quick Start Guide gives the same practical rule: disconnect the AC power cord from the electricity supply only when the power indicator is off. Pulling the cord while the light is white, orange, or blinking can cause data loss, data corruption, or damage to the console.

What the indicator tells you

  • White: The PS5 is on.
  • Orange: The PS5 is in Rest Mode.
  • Off: The PS5 is shut down and safe to disconnect from AC power under the normal shutdown procedure.
  • Blinking: The console is changing power state; wait until the indicator stops and turns off before unplugging.

If the system appears frozen, avoid immediately pulling the cable. Hold the console’s power button until the shutdown sequence begins, then wait for the indicator to turn off. Unplugging should be the last resort, and only after the light is off.

Which Rest Mode settings should you choose?

Your priority Internet setting USB setting Result
Remote and automatic downloads Stay Connected to the Internet: On Choose according to charging needs Games and eligible updates can download while the PS5 is in Rest Mode.
Charge a controller overnight Optional Always USB power remains available throughout Rest Mode.
Charge for a limited period Optional 3 Hours USB power is available for three hours after Rest Mode begins.
Use model-specific charging optimization Optional Adaptive on CFI-2000 model group Charging behavior is adjusted according to remaining controller battery level.
Reduce enabled standby features Off Off Network downloads, updates, and USB charging are not available through Rest Mode.
End all background activity Not applicable Not applicable Choose Turn Off PS5 and wait for the indicator to go dark.

There is no single best configuration. Enable only the functions you actually use: internet access for downloads and updates, USB power for charging, or neither when minimizing standby activity matters more than convenience.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming Rest Mode is fully off: Orange means the console is still in a low-power operating state.
  • Expecting downloads without internet access: Network connectivity and the relevant Rest Mode feature must both be enabled.
  • Reading 0.5 W as a guaranteed meter reading: PlayStation presents it as an automatic power-lowering threshold statement, not a universal draw for every setup.
  • Leaving USB power disabled and expecting charging: Select Always, 3 Hours, or Adaptive where supported.
  • Unplugging during a blinking indicator: Wait until the light is completely off to avoid data or hardware problems.
  • Assuming every USB-C cable is equivalent: Use the included cable or one compatible with the controller and PS5.

Bottom line for PS5 owners

Use Rest Mode when you want background convenience: downloads, automatic updates, suspended activity, or controller charging. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet for network tasks and configure Supply Power to USB Ports for charging. Expect more enabled features to mean more Rest Mode consumption; PlayStation’s documented 0.5 W statement is not a universal exact-use measurement. When you are finished with the console entirely, select Control Center > Power > Turn Off PS5 and wait for the indicator to turn off before disconnecting AC power.
