On a new Pixel 10, change the settings that protect your account and data before tuning performance or appearance. Start with a strong screen lock, device-finding, security updates, app permissions and lock-screen notification privacy. Then leave Adaptive Battery and Battery Optimization enabled, adjust display comfort and accessibility to your eyes and hands, and put frequently used controls in Quick Settings. This order reflects likely impact, not an official Google ranking; the best choices depend on how you use the phone.
1. Secure the phone, account and recovery options
Open Settings > Security and review every warning or incomplete item before installing apps or moving sensitive accounts to the phone. Pixel’s security page brings several controls together so you can handle the highest-consequence risks first.

Use a strong screen lock
Choose a PIN or password that other people cannot easily guess. A longer PIN is generally more resistant to casual guessing than a short one. Keep the lock enabled even if you plan to use Face Unlock or fingerprint unlock; biometric methods are conveniences layered on top of the device’s primary lock.

Check Find My Device in the security settings and confirm that the phone can be located if it is lost. Device-finding is useful only when the relevant account, location and connectivity requirements are satisfied, so read the status shown on your phone rather than assuming it is ready.

Check updates and built-in protection
Review the entries for the Security update, Google Play system update and Play Protect. Install available updates and investigate any warning the phone displays. Also run Google’s Security checkup for the account connected to the Pixel. Update timing and menu wording can change with Android releases, so use the status displayed on your device as the current authority.
2. Audit privacy controls and app permissions
Go to Settings > Privacy for a first pass through the phone’s data-access controls. You do not need to disable every permission; the useful question is whether each permission makes sense for the app that has it.
Start with Permission manager
Open Permission manager and inspect sensitive categories such as location, camera, microphone, contacts, files and photos. Remove access that an app does not need for its stated function. If an app stops working, you can grant the permission again when the feature genuinely requires it.
Use Privacy Dashboard to check recent access
Privacy Dashboard shows recent use of certain permissions and can reveal an app accessing a sensor or location unexpectedly. It is an audit aid, not a guarantee of privacy: it cannot prove that an app is trustworthy or describe every data practice outside the operating system’s permission events.
Review broader activity and advertising choices
Privacy settings also include camera and microphone access switches, location history, Activity controls, advertising settings, and usage and diagnostics controls. Decide which of these you want enabled, taking into account the convenience of personalized services versus the amount of activity associated with your Google account.

3. Decide what appears on the lock screen
Lock-screen notifications are a direct privacy-versus-convenience choice. Showing full content lets you scan messages and alerts without unlocking; hiding sensitive content prevents someone holding or glancing at the locked phone from reading details.
Change notification visibility
In Settings, open the notification and lock-screen options and look for controls for sensitive notification content. Choose whether details appear while the phone is locked. The exact path and labels can vary by Android software version, so search Settings for “lock screen notifications” if the wording differs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTune wake and lock-screen extras
Review options such as notification wake behavior, lock-screen shortcuts and Now Playing. Enable only the items that help you at a glance. A less informative lock screen is harder to scan but exposes less information when the phone is unattended.
4. Keep Adaptive Battery on, then make deliberate battery trade-offs
Google’s battery guidance says, “For best results keep Adaptive Battery and Battery Optimization on.” Leave both enabled unless you have a specific troubleshooting reason not to. Adaptive Battery learns your usage patterns, and Google notes that optimization after initial setup or a factory reset can take a few weeks to fully reflect how you use the phone.
Use the least disruptive battery changes first
| Setting or change | Where to look | What it may change | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adaptive Battery | Battery settings | Allows the system to learn usage and manage background activity | Learning is not immediate; behavior can settle over several weeks after setup or reset |
| Battery Optimization | Battery or app battery settings | Restricts unnecessary background work for eligible apps | Some apps may deliver background updates less promptly |
| Lower brightness or Adaptive brightness | Settings > Display & touch | Reduces display power use or lets the phone adjust brightness automatically | A dimmer screen can be harder to read in bright surroundings |
| Dark theme | Display settings or Quick Settings | Uses a darker interface | Contrast and appearance change; battery impact varies by content and use |
| Shorter screen timeout | Display settings | Turns the screen off sooner when idle | You may need to wake the phone more often |
| Always-on Display off | Lock-screen or display settings | Removes persistent clock and notification information | You lose glanceable information without touching the phone |
| Smooth Display off | Display settings | Stops the higher-smoothness display mode | Scrolling and animations may look less fluid |
Google does not provide a setting-by-setting battery-life guarantee or a quantified improvement for these choices. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether the convenience cost is worth the runtime you gain.

5. Set display comfort, readability and touch response
Open Settings > Display & touch and adjust the screen for your eyes, environment and accessories rather than copying someone else’s profile.
Use Comfort View and Night Light deliberately
Pixel 10 models include Comfort View under Display & touch > Comfort filters. It applies a softer color filter, with intensity that can be adjusted adaptively or manually. Google describes Comfort View as intended to help reduce eye strain; it is a comfort feature, not medical treatment or advice.
Night Light is also found under Comfort filters on Pixel 10 phones other than Pixel 10a. If the control is absent on your model, do not assume the phone is malfunctioning; availability differs by model and software. Filters change color appearance, so turn them down or schedule them only when the warmer display is comfortable for you.
Adjust brightness and visual scale
Adaptive brightness can respond to changing surroundings, while manual brightness gives you direct control. Set Text size and Display size for readability, then check a few frequently used apps to make sure buttons and layouts still fit. Larger text can improve legibility but may cause more wrapping or scrolling.
Improve touch response with a protector
If you install a screen protector, enable Screen protector mode when available to increase touch sensitivity. Adaptive touch is another documented control that can help the phone interpret touches. Choose the mode that matches the protector and your experience; excessive sensitivity can also make accidental touches easier.

- Capture stunning photos with features like night sight, portrait mode, and HDR+.
6. Put everyday controls in Quick Settings
Swipe down to open Quick Settings, choose the edit option, and add or rearrange tiles you use often. Useful candidates include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, flashlight, screen recording, hotspot, Do Not Disturb, Dark theme and battery-related controls. Moving a control into the first panel reduces the number of swipes needed, while removing unused tiles keeps the panel readable.
For built-in guidance, open Settings > Device health > Tips and support. This area can surface current help for your specific Pixel 10 software, which is valuable when Google changes labels or moves a menu.
7. Treat Gemini as optional assistant personalization
Google identifies Gemini as the default assistant on Pixel 9 and later phones, which includes the Pixel 10 generation. You can access it by voice, the power button, the Google app or the Gemini app, depending on how your phone and account are configured.
Do not treat assistant setup as a required security or performance step. Decide whether you want an assistant activated from the power button or voice, and review the account and permissions it uses. Google notes that some earlier Google Assistant features are not available through the Gemini app. Availability and behavior can depend on account eligibility, region, language and software state, so the options shown on your device may differ.
8. Choose compatible charging accessories
Pixel 10 and later devices, excluding Pixel 10a, support Qi2 wireless charging. Pixel 10 and later phones do not charge wirelessly with first- or second-generation Pixel Stand hardware. If you want wireless charging, look specifically for a Qi2-compatible charger and verify compatibility with your exact model before buying.

Check wired-charging requirements
Use a compatible USB-C power adapter and check your phone’s hardware specifications for the wattage it supports. Do not infer charging speed from the connector alone or from an adapter’s maximum rating. Google also advises charging in a cool spot; heat can affect charging behavior and battery longevity.
Match a screen protector to the exact model
A protector is optional, but if you use one, confirm that it is made for your Pixel 10 variant and then test touch response. Screen protector mode is a compatibility aid, not an endorsement of any particular product.
9. A practical first-day sequence
- Set a strong screen lock and enroll the biometric unlock methods you actually want to use.
- In Settings > Security, confirm Find My Device, install security and Google Play system updates, check Play Protect and complete any security checkup prompts.
- Open Settings > Privacy, use Privacy Dashboard, and remove unnecessary sensitive permissions through Permission manager.
- Choose whether lock-screen notifications show sensitive details, then review wake behavior, shortcuts and Now Playing.
- Leave Adaptive Battery and Battery Optimization enabled. Wait to judge battery behavior until the phone has had time to learn your routine.
- Set brightness, text and display size, Comfort View or Night Light, and touch settings to your personal needs.
- Edit Quick Settings so the controls you use daily are in the first panel.
- Configure Gemini only if its access methods and account behavior suit you.
- If you plan to charge wirelessly, select a Qi2-compatible charger and avoid relying on first- or second-generation Pixel Stand hardware.
10. What to do when a setting is missing or behaves differently
Pixel menus are tied to Android version, model and region. Pixel 10a does not have every display or charging feature listed for other Pixel 10 models, and Night Light availability is specifically different on that model. If a path in this guide does not match your screen, use the Settings search field with terms such as “Comfort View,” “Night Light,” “screen protector,” “lock screen notifications,” or “Find My Device.”
Install pending system updates before troubleshooting a missing control. Then check Settings > Device health > Tips and support for device-specific guidance. For battery concerns, first confirm that Adaptive Battery and Battery Optimization remain on, reduce the most power-intensive display choices only if needed, and change one setting at a time so you can identify the cause of any unwanted behavior.
