QSSR and PSSR are different AI-upscaling tiers for different PS5 hardware. Sony positions QSSR as a streamlined, PS5-tuned option for the standard console, while PSSR is the higher-tier feature for PS5 Pro. Sony and developers describe clearer fine detail and more stable images, but published sources do not establish a measured image-quality gap or frame-rate advantage between them. The result depends on the game, its implementation, and graphics mode.
What is the difference between QSSR and PSSR?
QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution. Sony announced it on October 1, 2026, as an AI-guided upscaler designed for the standard PS5. PSSR—PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution—is Sony’s upscaling feature for PS5 Pro. Sony describes PSSR as its “gold standard” tier and QSSR as a performance-oriented tier intended to bring AI-guided upscaling to standard PS5 hardware. Sony’s QSSR announcement says the new design uses a streamlined neural network and an implementation hand-tuned for PS5.

| Technology | Target console | What Sony says | What has not been established |
|---|---|---|---|
| QSSR | Standard PS5 | A streamlined, PS5-tuned AI upscaler intended to improve image detail and stability. | Input or output resolution, compute cost, frame-time overhead, and a measured comparison with either PSSR version are not stated in Sony’s announcement. |
| Original PSSR | PS5 Pro | Sony’s AI upscaling feature, introduced for PS5 Pro. | A direct, controlled comparison with QSSR is not stated in the cited official sources. |
| Upgraded PSSR | PS5 Pro | A revised PSSR approach to the neural network and overall algorithm, rolled out to PS5 Pro from 2026. | A direct, controlled comparison with QSSR is not stated in the cited official sources. |
QSSR is not another name for PSSR, and the word “Quick” does not establish a specific speed or frame-rate increase. Sony has not published a numerical QSSR-versus-PSSR benchmark for image quality, internal resolution, frame rate, or frame time.

What changes in image quality?
Sony says QSSR brings notable improvements to image detail and image stability on standard PS5. Developers of its first announced games also describe clearer fine details and steadier images. Those statements are vendor and developer descriptions, not independent measurements or a controlled comparison with PSSR.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
For Marvel’s Wolverine, Insomniac Games technology head Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” to environments. Sucker Punch rendering engineer Jasmin Patry said QSSR resolves fine details in characters and environments with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. The claims describe their games; they do not demonstrate that QSSR equals or surpasses either PSSR version.
In practice, the details worth examining are fine textures, hair, foliage, thin geometry, particles, and image behavior during motion. A reconstruction can look sharp in a still frame yet flicker, shimmer, or leave afterimages as objects move. Treat static detail and temporal stability as separate parts of image quality.
Does QSSR improve FPS?
There is no published, controlled QSSR-versus-PSSR frame-rate test in the cited official material, and Sony’s announcement does not give a QSSR frame-rate uplift or performance overhead. “Performance tier” describes QSSR’s design positioning for standard PS5; it is not a promise that a game will run at a higher frame rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUpscaling changes how an image is reconstructed, but a game’s chosen graphics mode and implementation determine how that relates to resolution and performance. Do not assume QSSR will raise FPS, change a game’s target, or reduce its internal resolution. Those outcomes require game-specific evidence.
How upgraded PSSR changes the comparison
There is more than one PSSR implementation to account for. On February 27, 2026, Sony announced an upgraded PSSR for PS5 Pro, describing a substantially different approach to both the neural network and the overall algorithm. Resident Evil Requiem was the first title announced to use it. Sony also said a system software update would add an “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” option for PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR; the effect varies by game. Sony’s February announcement reported that more than 50 PS5 Pro titles had used PSSR to boost effective resolution at that time. That dated figure is not a current count, an upgraded-PSSR count, or a QSSR-support count.

Sony’s March rollout examples show why PSSR results should be treated as game-specific. Developers described improved image stability and motion clarity in Control and Alan Wake 2, finer restored details and less flicker or afterimage in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and improved image quality while maintaining stable frame rates in specific modes in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Sony cautions that results vary by title and that the system-level enhancement can be turned off if unexpected visual effects appear. Sony’s rollout post reports these title-specific observations; they are not a QSSR comparison.
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft describes upgraded PSSR improvements across Performance, Balanced, and Quality modes, which use different internal resolutions and dynamic resolution scaling. Its examples include steadier fine details, moving foliage, particles, transparency, and ray-traced lighting. These are results for that game, not a guarantee for other PS5 Pro titles or evidence of how QSSR performs. Ubisoft’s technical explanation discusses those reconstruction cases.
Which games support QSSR?
When Sony announced QSSR on October 1, 2026, it named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games using it; both were being patched that day. Sony said it would offer the technology broadly to PlayStation developers, but did not say every PS5 game would support it or publish a complete adoption list. The QSSR roster is therefore early and subject to change. Check a game’s current patch notes or official product information before assuming support.
How to compare QSSR and PSSR fairly
A useful head-to-head needs the same game, scene, graphics mode, display, and capture conditions. It should also identify which PSSR version is being tested. Without those controls, a difference could come from a patch, mode, or scene rather than the upscaler.
- Record the console, game version, patch, graphics mode, output resolution, and capture method.
- Compare fine detail in still images separately from stability during motion.
- Watch for flicker, shimmer, ghosting or afterimages, especially around hair, foliage, particles, transparency, reflections, and noisy ray-traced effects.
- Measure frame rate and frame time separately from perceived sharpness; do not infer performance from image quality alone.
Sony’s PS5 Pro product page positions Pro hardware around enhanced image clarity and performance. But QSSR is intended for standard PS5, so AI upscaling generally is not exclusive to the Pro. The available official material supports a hardware-and-implementation distinction, not a universal verdict that one tier always looks better or runs faster.
