Solana vs. Ethereum for Payments: Fees, Speed, and Trade-offs

Solana and Ethereum mainnet use different fee systems, and neither network’s block timing alone tells you when a payment is settled. Solana charges fees in SOL based on signatures and, when used, priority fees; Ethereum mainnet charges in ETH based on gas. Ethereum layer 2 networks are separate options with their own fee and settlement details. The right comparison depends on the specific payment, the confirmation assurance it needs, and the production setup—not just a headline fee or speed figure.

Which is cheaper for payments?

There is no stable, universal fiat-cost winner in the protocol figures. Solana’s fee documentation states a base rate of 5,000 lamports per signature, while Ethereum.org uses 21,000 gas as an illustration for a simple ETH transfer. Neither number is a current dollar quote: a fiat comparison also depends on the relevant token’s exchange rate, network conditions, transaction type, and any extra fee.

To compare costs fairly, measure the same specified payment on the named network at the same time, and convert each fee to the same fiat currency. A token transfer or smart-contract payment may not cost the same as a simple native-currency transfer. Do not compare lamports directly with gas: lamports are a SOL denomination, while gas measures Ethereum computational work.

Solana fees

Solana charges a base fee and may charge a priority fee. The documented base calculation is 5,000 lamports per signature; transactions with multiple signatures can therefore have a larger base fee. Priority fees depend on the requested compute-unit limit and compute-unit price, so the requested limit matters—not only the compute actually used. Fees are charged whether a transaction succeeds or fails. See Solana’s fee overview and fee structure.

Ethereum mainnet fees

Ethereum mainnet prices execution in gas, paid in ETH. The total fee is based on gas used multiplied by the base fee plus any priority tip. The base fee responds to recent block demand and is burned; the tip can incentivize validators. Ethereum.org’s 21,000-gas example is a quantity for a simple ETH transfer, not its fiat cost. A smart-contract payment can use a different amount of gas. See Ethereum’s gas documentation.

What does “faster” mean for a payment?

Block production, a transaction appearing in a block, user-visible confirmation, and protocol finality are different events. A merchant may choose to act on an early confirmation, but a payment that is high-value or difficult to reverse may warrant waiting for stronger settlement assurance. There is no universal confirmation policy for every payment.

Solana

Solana documentation describes block times of about 400 milliseconds. That is an approximate block-production measure, not a promise that every payment reaches finality in that time. Solana’s terminology defines finality in terms of nodes representing two-thirds of stake sharing a common root. See Solana’s markets documentation and terminology.

Ethereum mainnet

Ethereum proof of stake uses 12-second slots and 32-slot epochs. A transaction can be observed in a proposed block before its checkpoint is finalized. Finality relies on a supermajority link between checkpoints, so slot timing should not be presented as a settlement-time guarantee. See Ethereum’s proof-of-stake documentation.

How Ethereum layer 2 networks change the comparison

An Ethereum layer 2 (L2) is not a single fee or speed setting for Ethereum mainnet. Rollups execute transactions away from mainnet and publish data to Ethereum, sharing some costs across transactions. Actual costs and user experience vary by network design, operator charges, data publication, and network conditions.

  • Optimistic rollups use challenge or fraud-proof mechanisms. Withdrawals to mainnet can involve a challenge period; a liquidity provider may offer a faster exit for a fee.
  • ZK rollups publish validity proofs, but their fee components and withdrawal paths still depend on the particular implementation.

Do not assume that all L2s have identical security properties, costs, or withdrawal behavior. When comparing one with Solana or Ethereum mainnet, name the specific L2 and account for its user fee, the cost of publishing data to Ethereum, and the applicable bridge or withdrawal route. See Ethereum.org’s guides to scaling, optimistic rollups, and ZK rollups.

Payment capability is not the same as payment adoption

Solana’s finance documentation describes workflows for sending, accepting, and reconciling stablecoin payments. That shows documented payment capabilities; it does not establish that Solana has more merchants, greater payment volume, lower total processing costs, or better fiat off-ramps than Ethereum. The official material cited here does not provide comparable, independently verified adoption or payment-volume statistics for both chains.

Protocol fees are only one part of operating a payment service. A business also has to decide which assets it accepts, how it handles custody and compliance, how refunds and accounting work, and how it manages conversion and liquidity. Those choices require evidence specific to the business and its markets.

  • L2-specific details: Data publication and security model, operator fee components, and bridge or withdrawal path.

Production reliability affects the real payment experience

Solana’s production guide warns that public RPC endpoints are rate-limited and have no service-level agreement. It distinguishes devnet from mainnet: real SOL is needed to pay mainnet fees, and competition for block space can affect whether a transaction lands. Production setup—including fresh blockhashes and appropriate compute-budget and priority-fee choices where needed—matters alongside the nominal fee. See Solana’s production-readiness guide.

Solana’s finance documentation describes stablecoin payment workflows for sending, acceptance, and reconciliation; it does not by itself settle broader questions about merchant adoption or total processing costs. See Solana Finance.
