Sony says Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) improves image detail and stability on PS5, but its announcement does not publish a direct comparison with native rendering. Whether QSSR looks sharper depends on the game, scene, graphics mode and display conditions.
What QSSR does—and what Sony has confirmed
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on October 1, 2026, describing it as a new performance tier of AI upscaling built around a streamlined neural network and tuned for PS5. Sony says QSSR comes from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD, and is designed to improve image detail and stability. Sony also says PSSR remains its top-tier upscaling technology on PS5 Pro. These are Sony’s claims, not an independent head-to-head test. Sony’s QSSR announcement does not give per-game input or output resolutions or a measured sharpness advantage over native rendering.

Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR titles. Its announcement says patches released October 1 add QSSR as an additional graphics option in those games. Sony says the technology will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers; that does not mean every game supports it. Check a game’s patch notes and graphics menu for QSSR availability.

The announcement includes supportive comments from the developers of both games. Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry said QSSR resolves fine detail with temporal stability that had not previously been possible on PS5. These are attributed developer statements, not independent comparative findings.

Native rendering and QSSR are different approaches
Native rendering
Native rendering means the game renders at the resolution being discussed. It avoids the image-reconstruction step used by an upscaler.
QSSR upscaling
An upscaler reconstructs an output image from a lower-resolution rendered image. QSSR is designed to recover detail and stability in that upscaled image. Its result depends on the game’s implementation and source image, among other factors.

Neither the PS5’s video output setting nor the resolution reported by a connected screen establishes the game’s internal rendering resolution. A console can output at 2160p while a game renders internally at a different resolution and upscales to that output. PlayStation’s PS5 resolution guidance covers console output and screen capabilities; game-specific rendering features are separate.
When might QSSR look sharper?
There is not enough information in Sony’s announcement to say that QSSR always looks sharper—or less sharp—than native rendering. A meaningful comparison is specific to the game and conditions. Fine geometry and textures may reveal differences in a still image, while movement can make temporal stability more noticeable. The game’s graphics mode, the image it starts from and the connected display also matter. These are factors to check, not published QSSR test results.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
To compare fairly, use the same game, scene, graphics mode, console output setting and display conditions. Look at both still detail and moving scenes rather than treating one screenshot or the output resolution as a complete verdict.

- Check whether the game supports QSSR. Look at its patch notes and in-game graphics options. Sony’s first announced titles are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei; support should be verified game by game.
- Check the game’s graphics mode. The available rendering and upscaling choices are game-specific. Do not infer internal resolution from the console’s video output setting.
- Confirm your console model if you are looking for PSSR options. PlayStation documents an “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting for certain compatible games, available only on CFI-7000 model group consoles. That setting is separate from Sony’s QSSR announcement.
- Check the output resolution separately. On PS5, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output to review resolution. PlayStation says the console detects a connected TV’s capabilities and lets users adjust output; 4K output requires a compatible 4K screen and the output set to 2160p.
A compatible 4K screen and 2160p output are needed to view PS5 4K output, but neither is a requirement for QSSR nor proof that a game renders natively at 4K.
