QSSR is Sony’s streamlined, AI-guided upscaling option for supported games on the base PS5. AMD FSR is a broader family of PC graphics features, including upscaling and, in supported configurations, frame-generation and ray-related technologies. Sony’s PS5 Pro feature is called PSSR—not QSSR. Sony links its updated PSSR work to its collaboration with AMD, but that does not mean the console and PC implementations use identical hardware, settings or results.
QSSR, PSSR and FSR: the names refer to different things
The first step in comparing these technologies is separating Sony’s two PlayStation features from AMD’s PC-oriented suite. Sony says QSSR is a new, streamlined AI-upscaling tier designed for the base PS5. PSSR is the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution feature Sony associates with the PS5 Pro.

These distinctions matter when reading a comparison: base-PS5 QSSR, PS5 Pro PSSR and PC FSR run on different platforms and depend on different game integrations. A performance or image-quality observation about one is not automatically evidence about the others.

AMD’s current FSR Redstone presentation separates several features: FSR Upscaling, Frame Generation, Ray Regeneration and Radiance Caching. Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render; frame generation and the ray-related features address different parts of rendering. Not every game or PC supports every feature.

AMD says its machine-learning-based FSR upscaling is available for selected Radeon RX 7000- and RX 9000-series graphics cards, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027. Actual availability depends on both the GPU and the game’s implementation. Older game menus may still use labels such as “FSR 4,” while AMD’s current page calls the upscaling feature “FSR Upscaling.” Check the game’s supported options and AMD’s compatibility information rather than assuming that every feature in the FSR family is available on every Radeon card.
How Sony’s AMD collaboration relates to FSR
Sony says the algorithm and neural network behind its updated PSSR stem from Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony also describes AMD FSR 4 as another manifestation of that collaboration. This establishes a relationship between the technologies, not identity between every PSSR version and every FSR version.

QSSR is described by Sony as a PS5-tuned, streamlined tier for the base console; PSSR is the PS5 Pro feature. FSR is implemented in PC games for compatible hardware. Their shared development context does not make their processing settings, hardware requirements or game-specific output interchangeable.

Sony positions QSSR as improving detail and temporal stability on base PS5. Developers of its named launch games also describe clearer fine detail and more stable imagery. Those statements are useful descriptions of the developers’ aims and observations, but they are not a controlled comparison against AMD FSR.

Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement said the console had 67 percent more GPU compute units and 28 percent faster memory than the then-current PS5, and claimed up to 45 percent faster gameplay rendering from its upgraded GPU. Those are Sony’s 2024 specifications and performance claim for PS5 Pro versus the then-current PS5; they do not measure QSSR quality or prove that PSSR is faster or sharper than FSR.
The official materials cited here do not establish a universal visual-quality winner. To make a fair side-by-side judgment, a comparison would need the same game and scene, matched graphics mode and output resolution, disclosed internal resolution where known, equivalent patch versions, and a clear account of platform, capture method and whether frame generation is enabled. Without those conditions, claims that QSSR or FSR is categorically sharper, more stable or faster overstate what the evidence shows.

Which games support QSSR or PSSR?
QSSR on base PS5
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as initial QSSR games and said both were being patched to add it as an additional graphics option on PS5 in its October 1, 2026 announcement. That identifies launch examples, not a guarantee that QSSR is available in every PS5 game. Check each game’s current patch notes and graphics settings for its present support status.

PSSR on PS5 Pro
PSSR and upgraded-PSSR behavior also depend on game support. Sony’s March 2026 rollout announcement lists supported titles and emphasizes that results can vary by game. FSR on PC
FSR availability is likewise game- and hardware-dependent. A PC title may support one FSR feature but not another, and a compatible GPU alone does not enable a feature that the game has not implemented. Consult the game’s graphics menu and AMD’s current support information for the specific combination you plan to use.

How to choose between them
- If you play on a base PS5: QSSR is relevant only in a game that supports it. Look for it in that game’s graphics options after installing the required update.
- If you play on PS5 Pro: look for PSSR or upgraded PSSR support in the game’s settings and patch information. Do not treat QSSR as the PS5 Pro feature.
- If you play on PC: check which FSR feature the game supports and whether your graphics card meets that feature’s requirements. FSR Upscaling, Frame Generation, Ray Regeneration and Radiance Caching are distinct options.
- If image quality is the deciding factor: compare the same game and scene under comparable settings on the platform you actually use. Vendor descriptions and developer comments cannot substitute for a controlled cross-platform comparison.
