For most U.S. buyers, the standard disc-equipped PS5 is the better value; PS5 Pro is worth the extra $250 only if you’ll use its game-specific visual and performance upgrades. At Sony’s recommended U.S. prices effective April 2, 2026, the standard disc PS5 is $649.99 and PS5 Pro is $899.99. The Pro makes a stronger case for players with a compatible 4K display who regularly play games enhanced for Pro, and who value its 2TB built-in SSD. If you want physical-disc playback included or simply want to spend less, the standard model is the more straightforward choice.
How much more does PS5 Pro cost?
Sony’s recommended U.S. retail prices, effective April 2, 2026, are $899.99 for PS5 Pro, $649.99 for the standard disc PS5, and $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition. That makes the Pro $250 more than the disc model and $300 more than the Digital Edition. These are recommended prices, not guaranteed retailer prices; discounts, bundles, taxes, and availability vary. Sony directs buyers outside the listed U.S., U.K., Europe, and Japan markets to local retailers or PlayStation Direct for regional pricing. Sony’s March 27, 2026 price announcement lists the changes.

PS5 Pro’s advantage is additional graphics and performance capability, not a separate generation of games. Sony describes an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its AI-driven upscaling feature. On compatible games, Sony says the console can combine 4K output, ray tracing, and frame rates of 60fps or up to 120fps. Those are supported-game capabilities, not a promise that every title runs at 4K and 120fps.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
At the console’s September 2024 announcement, Sony said Pro has 67% more GPU compute units than the then-current PS5, memory that is 28% faster, and rendering up to 45% faster. Those are Sony’s manufacturer comparisons, not independent benchmark results. Sony also says Pro-enhanced features vary by game, so the practical benefit depends on what you play and how each title uses the hardware. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement explains those launch claims.
Sony’s current Pro page lists more than 100 enhanced PS5 titles and identifies games with Enhanced PSSR support; the catalog can change. Check whether your own regular games are listed rather than assuming the Pro label improves every PS5 title.
Storage, discs, and game compatibility
More built-in storage
The Pro’s 2TB SSD offers more built-in capacity than the standard PS5’s 1TB or Digital Edition’s 825GB. That can be useful if you keep many large games installed, but advertised capacity is not all available for games because the system reserves some space.

Disc playback is extra on Pro
PS5 Pro is digital-only as sold. Sony lists a compatible removable Disc Drive, but it is sold separately; the drive and console also need an internet connection during setup to pair them. If you own game discs, Blu-ray movies, or DVDs, include the extra drive and setup requirement in your comparison. The standard disc PS5 includes its drive, while the Digital Edition has none. See Sony’s Disc Drive compatibility and setup information.

PS4 and PS5 libraries
Sony says PS5 Pro plays PS5 games and more than 8,500 PS4 games, though a small number of PS4 titles are incompatible. Game Boost may stabilize or improve performance in supported PS4 and PS5 games; Sony does not promise a change for every game. The Pro is therefore not a reason to expect a new library or universal upgrades to games you already own.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should buy PS5 Pro?
- Choose Pro if you have a compatible 4K display, and the games you play are among those Sony identifies as enhanced. You are paying for the possibility of better image quality or performance in supported titles, not a guaranteed upgrade in every game.
- Choose Pro if 2TB of built-in storage is valuable to you and you would rather have more capacity on the console than manage installed games or add storage.
- Consider Pro if you already own a PS5 and want to pay for game-specific visual or performance enhancements rather than buy into a new game library.
- Consider Pro if your router supports Wi-Fi 7 and you specifically value that compatibility. A compatible router is needed for Wi-Fi 7 benefits, and actual online performance also depends on your network and the game.
Who should buy the standard PS5?
- Choose the disc PS5 if you want physical-game and movie playback included, or own a disc collection and do not want to buy a separate drive.
- Choose either standard model if price matters more than Pro enhancements. At Sony’s April 2, 2026 U.S. recommended prices, the disc PS5 saves $250 versus Pro; the Digital Edition saves $300 if you do not need a built-in drive.
- Choose standard PS5 if the games you care about are not enhanced for Pro, or you are content with the standard PS5 experience. Sony describes Pro features as title-specific enhancements; it does not make the standard PS5 obsolete.
Which one is worth the price?
For a buyer choosing a first console, the standard disc PS5 is the sensible default: it costs less and includes disc playback. PS5 Pro earns its premium when its specific advantages—enhancements in games you play, more built-in storage, or Wi-Fi 7 compatibility—matter enough to justify $250 more. Compare the supported-game list against your own library, and include the separate drive cost if you need discs, before deciding.
